I am 27 and have been having migraines since i was 10. I have been on everything for them and nothing helps. My new doctor put me on nortriptyline 10 mg before bed and im scared to take it because like i said before i have tried everything and nothing worked. I dont want another disappointment. Can anyone help me? ## Hello, Leah! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you've experienced. No matter what we take a medication to treat, there is always a chance that it won't work, that's just the reality of medical science. There's no real exact guarantees that can ever be made. Sometimes, you do have to try multiple medications to find the one that works for you. When I suffered congestive heart failure over 6 years ago, many of the medications to lower my blood pres...

I have just started taking this drug and understand that it is to help me sleep and help with chronic pain. However, I cannot sleep well with this, even though I feel drugged for at least 15 hours after a very low dose - 10 mg. It is also supposed to help with depression, but I feel more depressed. Can anyone shed light on this for me? What are your experiences with this drug? ## Hi Mieke, As a psychotherapist and a Holistic practitioner I wanted to address your comment because it sounds like your body is not responding well to the medication. You are not sleeping well and feeling drugged out much of the day and most alarming is that even though it is supposed to help you with the depression, it is actually making you feel worse. I am speculating, but are you a young adult (18 to 25 yrs...

I would like to take nortriptyline (10mg) with zolpidem (10mg) at night. Are these two medications ok to take together? I'm having some lower back pain. ## Has your doctor advised you to take them both? Both the Nortriptyline and the Zolpidem can cause depression of the central nervous system, so when they are used together, the dosage has to be carefully considered by your doctor and they should be monitoring you on a regular basis. ## My Dr. did prescribe these two medication, but not to be taken together,, she was trying to find a solution to my sleeplessness besides ambien,,nortriptyline did not help with sleep as I had hoped,,,thought it might help with some pain,,I will not take the notriptyline, does not sound like a safe combo. ## I would say to depends on the dosing. Hi. I've been taking nortriptyline for 3 years now. I am 18 year old female. I originally started with only 10 mg and have slowly increased the dose over time to now i take 45mg per night. The reason i first had it was for nerve pain and also teenage depression (where i struggled to attend school). I consider myself as made very good progress over the past 3 years, the last 2 being at school. In 2014, i was only attending school 2-3 days per week, in 2015 i attended 3-4 days per week. And now in 2016, i have a good job and work about 45 hours per week, going to work every day. I also keep to a rigid fitness schedule with exercising 5 days per week for at least half an hour (either running 3.5 to 5km or doing Kayla Itsines workouts). And i have kept to this for all of the 2016 year s...

Hi everyone, I'm interested in amitriptyline and/or nortriptyline. I have been taking amitriptyline 100mg at night. As usual my dose was increased over time. The only side effect I had difficulty with is that grogginess in the morning which I don't like. I'm most interested in no grogginess. I was told that it shall pass as my body adjusts. I found a different drug called nortriptyline accidentally while looking for insurance. They consider amitriptyline to be a tier 4 as to nortriptyline a tier 2, that's a huge difference in price for me, so I looked it up and they seem to be basically the same medicine but I noticed that in the comments area the grogginess was not so much a problem as to the other medicine...so if anyone can help me out with feedback that would be grea...

Female 67 years old diagnosed with severe o.a. of lumbar spine and hip who has involuntarily stopped Norco to treat pain. What are negative effects of treating pain with Suboxone while taking 100mg Nortriptiline at bedtime for depression? She lives a sedentary life w/o any exercise and a mitral valve that does not close completely with regurgitation and associated symptoms. ## Both medications can increase sedation, so she may experience a lot of drowsiness and dizziness, as listed by the FDA. Suboxone also does not always help everyone with pain, plus it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause other side effects, such as nausea, dry mouth and constipation. Is she on any other medications?

I just started 25mg nortriptyline for migraine prevention. I was previously on amitriptyline for them and it worked so well, but I was a zombie, couldn't wake up in the morning and had gained 10 pounds. I was always hungry and never felt full. I am hoping that the noritriptyline will have less side effects (at least that's what my doctor tells me). Day 2 of not sleeping. I take the pill before bed and that must be the problem. Does anyone take it in the morning? I'm a little worried that taking it in the morning will still keep me up that night. Also, is 25mg a little high for a starting dosage? ## Hello, JaneCat! How are you? As to your starting dosage, you're not actually starting, you're just switching from one to the other, so you'd not start it at the same d...

I have been taking 10mg of nortriptyline at night for migraine prevention for approximately 7 weeks. Shortly after starting this medication I began to have difficulty swallowing. After I eat I feel as though I have food stuck in my throat. Even the tiny, tiny nortriptyline pill taken with a glass of water sometimes feels stuck. Is difficulty swallowing a common side effect or should I be concerned? ## Hello, Sd26! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having. It sounds like you might be experiencing some acid reflux, many medications can cause it. Have you had this checked out by your doctor, yet? You may need to switch to a different medication, or take something that will help prevent the excess acid. Nortriptyline is classified by the FDA as being a ...

I take 900mg Gralise, 25mg Nortriptyline, 300mg Tramadol ER, 20mg oxycodone. I've taken all of this for six years. I have cried and complained about weight gain as soon as I started all of these drugs but my Dr. Keeps saying they don't cause weight gain! I'm a petite woman and was always fit and weighed about 107. Now I weigh a lot more, doesn't matter what I eat or don't eat, how much I walk or don't walk, it's been piling on a lot more lately. Do Gralise and or Nortriptyline cause more weight gain the longer you take it? Does it continue piling on the weight or does it eventually stop? ## Hello, Xanthia! How are you? I had taken nortriptyline for 10 days, but I had too many side effects so my Dr. weaned me off. Now 2 weeks later I'm better except for huge memory lapses. Has anyone else experienced this? ## No, that is not a typical side effect of taking this medication, or from stopping it, according to FDA reports. They are listed as typically including issues such as nausea, dizziness, headache, weight changes, mood swings, and dry mouth. Are you on any other medications? Has there been any change? ## I've lost 12 pounds because hard to swallow for 3 days ## Yes Nortriptyline caused significant memory impairment for me while taking it. The drug has a fairly long half life so may still be in your system after 2 weeks. It also takes time for your brain to adapt after stopping a medication. T...

I am a chronic pain patient and I have slowly got off hydrocodone 10mg-325 acetaminophen and acetaminophen#4 due to stomach issues. I also take other meds cyclobenzaprine diazepam, nortriptyline . I was prescribed the 25mg patch. after reading info with meds it states DO NOT TAKE IF NOT ALREADY USING OPIOID PAIN MED. I am scared to death to try this med. Because I have not used pain meds continually in the last 6 months. Is this safe to start? ## Fentanyl is a very strong opiate narcotic, it is over 80 times stronger than Morphine. Learn more Fentanyl details here. The main issue I see with it, apart from it being so strong, is that it really leaves you nowhere else to go in the future. Generally, it should be the last resort medication, after other options have been exhausted, since th...

I have been under the care of several prominent Pain Specialists for severe neuralgia. I am prescribed six 10/325 Percocet daily every 6-8 hours for pain. I take them two at a time, five hours apart. Noon, dinner and unwinding with the TV at night. Some days I take four, some days I take eight. Sometimes I take 3 at a time. I also take Lyrica, Nortriptyline and Zyprexa for their pain benefits plus several other medications. I never run out before the end of the month, there is never a desperate moment. Frankly, I am not sure if they even work any more as they should. If I am prescribed 180, 10-325 Percocet say each month for the past two years, that is well over four thousand pills. I am not sure if some of my daily discomfort is withdrawing from the medication or something similar. I w...

I am on both of these meds do to severe medical issues. I take 40 Mg of opana 4 x daily and 30 Mg of oxycodone 5 x daily as well as Nortriptyline 150 Mg twice daily and neurontin 600 Mg 3 x daily. Needless to say a few different stomach medication due to chronic nausea. Oh and also phenergan pills and injectable. My question is has anyone found anything other than multiple medications to relieve severe chronic pain. ## I also have severe medical problems and nothing works.
