Nitrofurantoin is an antibacterial medication used to treat bladder infections, but it is not as effective for kidney infections.[1] It is taken by mouth.[1] Common side effects include nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and headaches.[1] Rarely numbness, lung problems, or liver problems may occur.[1] It should not be used in people with kidney problems.[1] While it appears to be generally safe during pregnancy i...

Humana Prescription benefit Plan told me they will not cover this drug anymore as it is high risk for older patients. What are these risks? I have been taking 100mgs'day for about a year now due to kidney infections from kidney stones and an abcess. I take it as a precaution ( prophylactic) and have not had any problems since. ## It has been found that all of its side effects are more pronounced and common in the elderly, in addition it creates the risk of pulmonary fibrosis. In this case, it is probably best to speak to your doctor about using an alternative medication. Are there any questions or comments?

prescribed by Dr ## what are the side effects of this med and how does it affect birth control ## Ive taken this medication for UTI. This medication caused me alot of health pulmonary complications such as bronchitis, shortness of breathe, coughing, wheezing and fever. ## @deldre, Based on my research, the antibiotic Nitrofurantoin is used to treat various types of infections. BID means it is supposed to be taken twice daily. According to healthtap.com you should use a back-up method of birth control (ie. condom)while taking Nitrofurantoin. Even though there is little evidence supporting a massive increase in pregnancies with antibiotic use, it is better to be safe than sorry. Use the back-up method during the run of your antibiotic and continue for one week Common side effects may incl...

I read the prescription directions wrong. I'm taking nitrofurantoin for a UTI in pregnancy. The directions say every 12 hours for 7 days. I quickly looked at the bottle and thought it said every 7 hours. I have five pills left, so now about 2 and a half days left now that I know the actual timespan. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and now beginning to worry. Am I okay? ## Hello, Momma! How are you? Congrats on the baby! It would be best to return to your doctor to inform them of what happened. While overdose of an antibiotic isn't usually life-threatening, there may be issues they need to watch for with the baby and they may also need to prescribe more antibiotics, so you can do a full course of treatment. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness,...

My mother is taking Nitrofurantoin-mcr 100 for a UTI infection. In the past she has been on other antibiotics for the same and the infection has come back within days of use. Now she has been using the nitro- for 3 days, she has noticed that now it seems she has a bit of thickened blood in her urine. She is also taking a blood thinner(cumadin) for a heart problem. Is this a possible side effect of the med. ## Hello, Ken! How is your mother doing? On this, I'd suggest she see her doctor to have it checked out. It may just be from the UTI, but with her being on the Coumadin, any bleeding can be risky and isn't something to just wait around and see what happens. Do they know what's causing the repeated UTIs?

I started taking a 10 day prescription for Nitrofurantoin at 6 months pregnant for a UTI almost 4 weeks ago. Eight or nine days into taking it, my heart rate went up to 173. For about 14 hours it fluctuated above 145. Three days after that went away, I got a pressure headache that felt like someone was squeezing my head and broke out in hives. A few days following that I ended up having severe joint and muscle pain, stiff ankles, my heels feel like they are on fire. And I CANNOT walk! The pain is excruciating. It hurts to sit, stand, and especially walk. The headache went away, the rapid pulse, and the rash is getting better, but the tremendous joint pain remains. It hurts so bad at times I just cry! I pray that the baby is ok. I usually use cranberry extract and natural cures, but this...

I have been prescribed this for repeated UTI and am on a 56 day course. But three weeks in I too have intense itching. I take one tablet at night with some food or milk and two hours later the itching starts. I find ice packs on feet and hands help and have tried taking an antihistamine one hour before but this doesn't seem to help. I have resorted to taking one of my husbands amitriptyline which helps to calm things down, and is easier than standing in a bath or cold water whilst holding my hands under the freezing cold water tap !! Not fun. I also get a shortness of breath, like a tightness in my chest. I am waiting to hear back from my GP as to whether I should stop taking it. ## I think you should contact your doctor immediately, these could be the symptoms of an allergic reacti...

This medication was given to me because I continued getting urine infections after intercourse and nothing else was working for me. I was given this medication to take one pill after intercourse, just one time. I have to say that for the past two years I have never gotten another UTI. This medication is great. I love it. Am I the only one that this has worked for? I am diabetic and also take insulin. I also have not gotten anymore yeast infections. ## Hello, Rosa! How are you? I'm so glad that you found something that works for you. And no, you are not the only one that it has worked for, there have actually been quite a few people that have posted about having good experiences with it, but usually in a preventative manner, such as how you are taking it. Most of the complaints I...

i use these pills for kindey inffection if i stop usin them wat will happen ## If you don't finish the full course of an antibiotic, there is a definite risk that the bacteria that caused the infection will not be eradicated and will develop into antibiotic resistant bacteria. Such 'super' bacteria can make you very ill and will be much, much harder to eradicate with other antibiotics. I am 76 years old. I was prescribed Nitrofurantoin 50 MG twice a day for a UTI. On the 11th day I developed a red rash all over my legs, huge hives everywhere which itched incessantly, swelling of face and lips and extreme fatigue.
