Nitrofurant Dose

I am going in for a uterus treatment and the doctor had me take a urine culture 7 days prior. Twice, the culture came back as positive and the doctor postponed the uterus treatment. I had no symptoms of the UTI. He then prescribed Nitrofurantoin 100mg once a day for a month prior to the next appointment for the procedure. Is this the right antibiotic for my situation? The dosage? Anything else I might add to rectify the positive result of the culture? ## It is appropriate and the best choice of drug. I am also on this drug everyday in the same dose of 100 mg. My Dr said I had a UTI, all though I had no symptoms, so put me on a course of nitrofurantion. I started feeling faint, about to pass out, my heart was racing, and I was breathless, I returned to the Dr, and he put me on a higher dose, I felt even worse, and my right eye couldn't focus properly, I ended up in hospital for a week, still having funny turns, but they couldn't find anything wrong with me. what is this for< I thought it was for a bladder infection ## It is an antibiotic, it is commonly used for bladder infections, but can be used to treat other infections, as well. I am 82 and had UTI from the 1st of April. By 16th April , not better, I needed to start on my third lot of Nitrofurantoin. That day I became very ill. My symptoms lasted three days and nights. Every joint was aching. My arm was as sore as if I had bumped it. I hadn't. It hurt to turn my eyes. I had trigeminal pains and my head was aching. I am 15 weeks pregnant I was put on this medication for a UTI 2 capsules a day for 7 days I took 3 doses and didn't think much about mood changes because of being pregnant, after 4th dose I experienced severe vomiting, at the same time my nose was gushing blood, and I became extremely confused and unable to speak anything that made sence, I read possible side effects some included unusual bleeding confusion mood or mental changes severe vomiting. My doctor (OBG) gave me nitrofurantoin monohydrate macrocrystals (100 caps) for a UTI. 3 days after completing my dose I got an allergic reaction with hives, etc. I went to my MP Dr. and she said I may be allergic to sulfur, but my OBG just told me there is no sulfur in this antibiotic. I've been taking low dose 50mg Nitrofurantoin for over a year. My urologist recommended it and my PCP also said I should take it for life. I've had frequent UTI's/year and it's been a problem for more than 10 years. I've been free of UTI's since I went on the low-dose Nitrofurantoin. I was given A weeks dose of nitrofurantoin 100 mg for UTI and on the last 3 days my skin has been uncontrollably itchy. Small bumps, all through out my legs and arms. I'm on day 3 of a 7 day course of Nitrofurantoin (4x50mg). After taking my third dose, I experienced what I would describe as 'flu' like symptoms; aches, shivers and general malaise. The next day I felt much better - the 'flu like' symptoms were gone but I still felt a bit nauseous and had diarrhoea. However the symptom I'm most worried about is a cough I've developed. I'm a smoker, bit can't touch a cigarette as I go into spasms of coughing. I'm happy to put up with side effects as my UTI appears to be improving - as long as none of the side effects are considered dangerous. I took this twice in a row at 2:00. Is that okay? Also, is it okay to take one tomorrow morning and then 1 at night? ## Hi Mary, I just took a look at the dosing guidelines for this medication, and it states that Nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals capsulesÂshould be taken with food every 12 hours for seven days. Because of that strict 12 hour gap in between doses, I definitely wouldn't say it is ok to take them back to back like that. Schedule your doses so that you take 1 in the morning when you get up and one a couple hours before you go to bed (giving yourself enough time to leave you with 12 hours before the following morning dose). My dog is on Nitrofur-Macr because she is no longer responding to toher antiobiotic for urinary tract infection. I am giving her food with each dose. Any suggestions. ## I'll admit that I am not very familiar with the use of most medications in animals, most of my information and knowledge relates to their use and effects in humans. However, I did find a listing for this in a veterinary manual, it isn't extremely detailed, but it does seem that it can cause nausea in dogs, just as it can in people, it looks like many of the side effects are very similar.
