Morphine Patch

My mother has spinal stenosis which cases her great pain. She uses B transpatches 50. which provides no relief. What could be used as an alternative? She is 84. ## I have cervical spinal stenosis. I have used fentanyl patches and lollipops in the past to control my pain. It is very strong but can be given in very small doses and due to her age I doubt a pain specialist would give her any grief over it. Dilaudid also works well for me but I am a poor metaboliser so not many opiatess work for me. A 50mg morphine patch has been prescribed by an oncologist and is too strong for my uncle who has terminal stomach cancer. Is it o.k. to cut the patch in half? I've been on a fen patch for five years due to Pernicious Anemia and nerve damage amongst other things. No other pain relief have worked and I can't absorb through the stomach so need it through the skin. Its been gradually raised and now I an bear it. But I'm always feeling tired,jittery and forgetful though these are symptoms of PA as well. I'm thinking I might start to feel more normal if I stop the patches.I'm fed up of the horror nightmares too and forebodings. I want to switch pain killers to a more bearable one if possible and I don't want to suffer too badly while withdrawal which to be honest, is really scaring me. I just started Opana 30mg twice a day and I didn't think it was working either, but 4 days into in, my pain has decreased from an 8 to a 2-3. You have to be patient and allow several days for it to reach a steady level in your system. Be patient...it will work. I have taken less breakthrough meds over the past several days than over the past 10 years. All I need now is 1-2 per day. If you are really looking for pain relief I would highly recommend the opana, and I have tried all but the fentanyl patches. I keep reading that fentanyl is 80% stronger then morphine. However, most people are talking 100 mcg fentanyl patch over 72 hours, so now I wonder what this means? How much morphine totals fentanyl in 3 days? Confusing eh, anybody know?? I am on the 100 mcg patch every 3 days and have 4 mgs hydromorphone every day for back up pain. I don’t like the hydromorphone, I believe it’s making me constipated and I have to take meds for constipation now. I've been on this for over a year. I have stage 4 rectal cancer. I like the fentanyl and it works, but it’s weak when spread out over 3 days. I'm thinking of asking my doctor to let me take one type of opioid instead of two high doses. I am currently on 54 ml. of Ordine 10, 150 mg Fentanyl patch, and 80 mg Targin, equivalent to about 1,200 mg of morphine a day. My pain specialist wants me to change to methadone or suboxone. I was taking 4 80 mg oxys daily my doc put me on 2 100 mg teva morphines will it help the same and will i go through withdraw thank you ## There may be some issues here, because the Oxycodone is actually 1 and a half time stronger than the Morphine, so you'd need 120mgs of Morphine to equal each 80mg dose you were taking of the Oxycodone. for 3 years my dr. was prescribing me three 60mg morphine sulphate er and four 30mg ms ir daily. when it became impossible to get MS in Florida, he switched me to Fentanyl patch 12MCG/HR every 3 days and 7.5mg-200 hydrocordone , 1 every 8 hours. the pain was unbearable and I felt terrible. cold sweats, shakes, could'nt think straight. when I asked him to increase dosage, he increased the patch to 25 MCG, but said there was more MS in the 7.5-200 hydrocodone than the 30mg tabs of ms. do you agree? An expired 5mg Fentanyl patch circa 1999 ... Can this be taken in lieu of Morphine 60mg? Safe? ## No, that patch is very old and likely retains no efficacy. My best friend is in stage 4 liver cancer. The doctor has her on 125 ml of morphine. She has a patch containing morphine and pills with morphine. She doesn't say much about her pain. However, according to numerous articles, Fentanyl is said to be approximately 100 times more potent than Morphine, with 100 micrograms of Fentanyl approximately equivalent to 10 mg of Morphine in analgesic activity (or in regards to pain relief).
