My mother has spinal stenosis which cases her great pain. She uses B transpatches 50. which provides no relief. What could be used as an alternative? She is 84. ## I have cervical spinal stenosis. I have used fentanyl patches and lollipops in the past to control my pain. It is very strong but can be given in very small doses and due to her age I doubt a pain specialist would give her any grief over it. Dilaudid also works well for me but I am a poor metaboliser so not many opiatess work for me. You might want to ask about either one of these pain meds. ## Yes, the Fentanyl patches are also what I would suggest asking her doctor about, it is a very strong narcotic, over 80 times stronger than the Morphine, so the patches come in either 0.25mcgs or 0.50mcgs. They are time released and eac...

Are morphine patches as effective on chronic pain issues like fentynal? I've been on Kadian twice a day and I m concerned it won't work for me. ## Hello, Nicole! How are you? Did the Kadian work well for you? Morphine is the active ingredient in it. The FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.

A 50mg morphine patch has been prescribed by an oncologist and is too strong for my uncle who has terminal stomach cancer. Is it o.k. to cut the patch in half? He is not in pain but is like a zombie. ## Hello, Christine! How is your uncle? No, that could result in his getting too much of the medication at once, which risks an overdose. How long has he been using them? The zombie like effect should improve, as his body gets used to the medication. But if it continues longer than a few weeks, then he should consult his doctor. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. ## You can fold part of the patch under just don't breach the seal this is how the weekend yo...

I have been taking 60mg morphine sulfate er for 10 plus years with 30mg oxycodone for breakthrough pain relief. A friend of mine who also has severe pain is on fentynal patches and I was wondering which one is better? What I am taking now is beginning to not work as well as it use to. Help! ## Fentanyl is the most potent opiate available, it is over 81 times stronger than Morphine. The FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, dry mouth, and constipation. However, it depends on which medication works best for you and what your doctor feels is safe for you to try. I just started Opana 30mg twice a day and I didn't think it was working either, but 4 days into in, my pain has decreased from an 8 to a 2-3. You have to be patient and allow several days for it to reach a steady level in your system. Be patient...it will work. I have taken less breakthrough meds over the past several days than over the past 10 years. All I need now is 1-2 per day. If you are really looking for pain relief I would highly recommend the opana, and I have tried all but the fentanyl patches. If your looking for a high, don't bother....but they do make me a little sleepy but I will take that over pain anyday! ## Hello, Shelbygirl1970! Thank you for your very helpful post! How are you? Fentanyl is the strongest available, it's over 80 times stronger than Morphine. Your doctor will most likely have you start at the 25mcgs or 50mcgs dosage, since it's so potent to see how it works for you. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mout...

I keep reading that fentanyl is 80% stronger then morphine. However, most people are talking 100 mcg fentanyl patch over 72 hours, so now I wonder what this means? How much morphine totals fentanyl in 3 days? Confusing eh, anybody know?? I am on the 100 mcg patch every 3 days and have 4 mgs hydromorphone every day for back up pain. I don’t like the hydromorphone, I believe it’s making me constipated and I have to take meds for constipation now. I've been on this for over a year. I have stage 4 rectal cancer. I like the fentanyl and it works, but it’s weak when spread out over 3 days. I'm thinking of asking my doctor to let me take one type of opioid instead of two high doses. I’ll leave it up to the doctor but I’ll suggest maybe giving me 75 mcg eve...

I am currently on 54 ml. of Ordine 10, 150 mg Fentanyl patch, and 80 mg Targin, equivalent to about 1,200 mg of morphine a day. My pain specialist wants me to change to methadone or suboxone. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance. ## Hello, Allan! How are you? Most people have said that Suboxone didn't do much for their pain, so if you need pain relief, you might be better off with the Methadone. I've never taken either one myself, I am just stating what I've learned from other posters on this site. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Does anyone else have any advice to offer? ## I really strongly suggest having nothing to do with Methadone...

I was taking 4 80 mg oxys daily my doc put me on 2 100 mg teva morphines will it help the same and will i go through withdraw thank you ## There may be some issues here, because the Oxycodone is actually 1 and a half time stronger than the Morphine, so you'd need 120mgs of Morphine to equal each 80mg dose you were taking of the Oxycodone. Learn more Oxycodone details here. Learn more Morphine details here. for 3 years my dr. was prescribing me three 60mg morphine sulphate er and four 30mg ms ir daily. when it became impossible to get MS in Florida, he switched me to Fentanyl patch 12MCG/HR every 3 days and 7.5mg-200 hydrocordone , 1 every 8 hours. the pain was unbearable and I felt terrible. cold sweats, shakes, could'nt think straight. when I asked him to increase dosage, he increased the patch to 25 MCG, but said there was more MS in the 7.5-200 hydrocodone than the 30mg tabs of ms. do you agree? Also, how does the patch equate to the Three 60MG MS er I was taking daily? Prior to this Dr.,after I moved 200 miles away,, my orthopedic surgeon was prescribing me Oxycontin, or oxycodone. An expired 5mg Fentanyl patch circa 1999 ... Can this be taken in lieu of Morphine 60mg? Safe? ## No, that patch is very old and likely retains no efficacy. All medications degrade over time and this one is quite old. It would be best to stick with your Morphine, as prescribed. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?

Does anyone know if this dose of morphine is strong?I know she is never without pain. ## Well, you didn't state the dosages of everything she is using, however, as long as she is being medically monitored on a regular basis, by her doctor, then there should not be a problem. There have been some in-depth studies done about the use of narcotics for people will severe illnesses and whether or not high doses of them had a detrimental effect and/or hastened death and they found no connection. As long as the person's dosage has been gradually increased, as needed, over time, then the body quickly adj...

My pain Dr.had me on 30mg. of morphine sulfate 3 times per day & switched me to 50 mcg. Fentanyl patches at 1 every 3 days. The morphine was keeping me up at night & did'nt seem to ease the pain.Second day on the patch & it does'nt stop the pain either any suggestions will be truely appreciated..Thanx ## I don't have an exact answer to your question, since everyone responds differently to both of these medications (based on tolerance, etc). However, according to numerous articles, Fentanyl is said to be approximately 100 times more potent than Morphine, with 100 micrograms of Fentanyl approximately equivalent to 10 mg of Morphine in analgesic activity (or in regards to pain relief). I hope this information helps! ## You need to give it a little time. I am on 75 ev...

How are you? The Oxycodone in Percocet is one and a half time stronger than Morphine, and the Fentanyl is over 81 times stronger than Morphine, which likely gives you a bit of a comparison. The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. I take 60mg of Morphine 3x daily + 10/325 mg Oxycodone/Acetaminophen daily. My cancer is getting worse. Any ideas? ## Hello, Chuck! How are you feeling?
