Started morphine pills for back pain 30 mg I took it at 9 p.m. It didn't kick in until 12:15...3 hours for reaction? As well, really strong as far as that feeling of "tightness" throughout neck arms etc. Instead of pain relief & anility to sleep, I feel the need to stay awake and monitor breathing. I'm coming thru a reduction of morphine SR 100mg down to 60mg. This has been hell as ive never ever known before. Im wondering if I can try and reduce further by 10mg at a time over the next 5 years? I am so afraid now that as I become older and not able to control the situation that some Dr will come into the picture and just reduce me as this last Dr has done. I had a massive headache/migraine and was admitted to the ER Friday afternoon, dosed with morphine around 5 pm and again around 7pm prior to discharge to home. The great thing is that this awful headache resolved within about 6 hours of the last dose; it was the worst I ever had, after two weeks of stiff neck and dull headaches. I will be following up with a neurologist due to my prior history of cervical fusion surgery and rotator cuff tear in left shoulder, and now, evidence of nerve damage or rotator involvement in the right shoulder. I rarely take pain meds because I don't like the way they make me feel; I have managed pain before with tramadol 50 mg. Ive heard you shouldnt crush or chew a morphine tablet..why is this? ## Hello, Nancy! How are you? This is usually referring to the time released tablets, crushing, cutting or chewing them can destroy the time released nature and may result in your getting to much of the medication, at once, which could cause a dangerous overdose. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. My Doc prescribed me 15 mg of Morphine. Ive been on vicodin 7.5 mg for three years. How much of a difference is morphine? I took half of the blue pill just now. ## The Morphine is stronger than the Hydrocodone in the Vicodin, it is also a straight narcotic, without the Acetaminophen that is in the Vicodin. It sounds like your doctor is trying to help you get better control of your pain. The main issue here is, what type of Morphine pills are they? If they are the time released version, generics for MS Contin, then cutting the pill in half could be very dangerous and should not be done. After a brain & spine surgery a 1.5yr. ago (forever living w/ Chiari Malformation & related conditions, permanent damage, more surgery) I've been on 30mg. I usually take 1-3 10/500 hydrocodone pills a day. I recently Ran out and have 60 mg morphine. I have never taken morphine pills.. had it iv in hospital a few times. Should I take it to ease the pain or what should I expect. I've been hospitalized 4 times between Feb./Mar. this year. I was taking morphine 15mg for maybe 2 weeks before this, I was having hallucinations each time. Doctors told me it was due to UTI s and any bacterial infections. I had 1 infection because of an IV in my leg. Can you explain to me if that's right or not?
