I've been dealing with ibs and chronic constipation for about 5 years. Recently my gi doctor suggested i switch from lactolose to miralax as the lactolose was creating a lot of gas discomfort, i was taking 6 tablespoons daily of lactolose for the past 4 years. I started the miralax 6-21-11 at one dose daily for first 7 days then increased to two dose daily. The miralax at first worked ok but has stopped working the last 2 days. How long should i continue with miralax, iv'e heard to give it 1 to 2 weeks for it to start working good. I'm thinking about going back to lactolose and putting up with the gas. Thanks. ## Have you consulted your doctor? They'd really be best able to advise you on this. The use of laxatives, such as Miralax, for IBS can really depend on the patien...

I took 68 grams (4 caps) of Miralax today because the colonoscopy procedure that I will have (this is two days before the pocedure). I had to use the restroom after 5 hours. Is that normal? I thought that Miralax would work at least the day after. Thanks ## Sounds kinda strange, was it really runny and did you have to keep making trips? ## Hello, Rob45! How are you? It can really vary from person to person, much of it depends on your body, your normal diet, your fluid intake, other medications you may be taking, your overall health and etc. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Miralax as possibly including nausea, flatulence, stomach/abdominal cramping and diarrhea. It would be best, however, to contact your doctor, as they may want you to take an extra dose, since this occurred. I...

I'm very nervous about starting the liquid Miralax as in the past with a colonoscopy prep (which I know is a much larger amt) I get terribly nauseated. Any suggestions as to how to get the 17g down? I have to do this twice a day and I've heard just plain water is awful. I plan on plugging my nose. Also, does anyone else have low energy with constipation? Thank you SO much ## How are you doing, Gina? I hope everything is going well and you didn't end up nauseated. But the nausea can be a normal side effect of most of these laxative medications. in many cases it's due to the stimulation of the bowel that happens, there's some internal bloating and cramping that you may not always feel, but it can put some pressure on the stomach making you feel sick. You can learn more...

i took a dose of miralax saturday, then another on sunday with no results along with stool softeners that my doctor gave me for post operation. someone told me about a faster acting laxative that i took sunday night and i finally had relief. the problem is it is now wednesday night and i have been going to the bathroom every 2 hours and have loose stools. when will it stop. after every meal also i have to go immediatly. ## At this point, it is just going to take time for it to process out of your body, so things return to normal. It is likely that you should have given the Miralax a longer amount of time to work, some laxatives can take 48 to 72 hours, and if they haven't worked by then, you are told to consult a doctor. The Miralax FAQ on their website even lists that it can take 1...

I've been on miralax for 4 months and want to stop it tonight but I'm afraid I'm going to be constipated is it wise to just stop taking it? ## According to ehow.com, "Miralax has no harsh side effects in comparison to other options available. Most laxatives artificially stimulate nerves in the colon. Long-term use of harmful laxatives can cause your bowels to forget how to work on their own; whereas Miralax is non-habit forming and can be used long-term with no concern for permanent damage." That said, I would personally feel safe stopping the medication whenever need be. I haven't read any information linking this drug to withdrawal symptoms so you should be good to go on that end as well. If constipation occurs, I think it would be wise to invest in digestive e...

I took Miralax the last 2 days and feel absolutely horrible. I was up all night, my stomach aches so bad and I just want to know how long this is going to last? Is there anything I can do to make the stomach pains stop? ## Hi Liz, Sorry to hear about how you're feeling on Miralax. From what I could tell by looking online, things like abdominal cramping are considered to be a common side effect of Miralax. So it may just be that you have to wait it out until the medication is completely out of your body. Unfortunately I couldn't find any specific details on the half life of Miralax. And without that, there's no telling how long it will actually take to leave your body. In the meantime though, I know peppermint essential oil is recognized for helping to ease stomach pain.... a...

Hi, I have been taking Miralax for 4 years and never had a stomach problem. I eat the same thing pretty much everyday because I am a diabetic, and have not taken any new meds. The last few days though immediately after taking 2 tsp's with 10oz of water as usual, at the usual time in small sips, I got heart burn. Last week I chugged the whole 10oz down as usual and in the pit of my stomach I had very bad cramping, so when I started sipping it down I did not get cramping, but got the bad heartburn. ## It is possible for almost anything to cause heartburn. Other side effects may include nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, according to FDA reports. How are you doing, now? Has there been any change? Are you on any other medications? ## Hi, thanks for the reply. Well, I tried chugging d...

I read somewhere that I could pre mix Miralax in the morning for Colonoscopy prep day and leave the mixture in the fridge all day so I didn't have to take time to mix when I get home from work. So I did, then I had to reschedule my procedure before I got home from work for 3 days later. Would the mixture still be good? Or do I need to buy more? ## As per the manufacturer's instructions - "Do not mix the MiraLAX earlier than the morning before your procedure." They don't go on to mention any particular reason why (which I find odd - and perhaps that information should be questioned), but for now it sounds like your best bet would be to start fresh and then follow protocol again. Additional feedback from other patients on how to prepare for the colonoscopy can also be ...

in prepping for a colonoscopy, i had to half the large bottle of miralax to mix with liquid. large bottle is 8.3, so i went to half that and realized the large bottle contains 12 oz, not 8.3 as labeled.....why???? they say that the 17oz lid has 14 servings (8.3) but i measured out the 14 servings in the lid, and there is still more than 8.3...so do i prep with 8.3 oz or the whole bottle (which everyone assumes is 8.3!!) ## Hello, Jan! How are you? If they told you to use the whole bottle, then that is what you should do, but please double check with your doctor to be sure. I've not seen anyone else mention this, so it seems very odd. The FDA classifies this as being a laxative and its typical side effects may possibly include stomach pain, bloating, diarrhea and dizziness. Is there ...

Today is 04/2016. Can I take MiraLAX when it expired on 11/2015? If not, how do I dispose the of contents, down the sink or the toilet? ## According to the frequently asked questions on MiraLAX.com, "It is not recommended to use MiraLAX beyond the labeled expiration date.” As to the method of disposal, you should leave it in the sealed container and dispose of it with your regular household trash. Additional product information from DailyMed: [1] ## How long will the laxative Purelax work if it expired 12/15? ## I've never known Miralax to be a liquid so your answer isn't really an answer. Looking to find out if it's still safe to take when it expired over a year ago. Thank you, ## I took some from 2014 and this 2018 and it worked just as usual. In today’s ma...

Any suggestions how to stop using Miralax? I was having constipation issues for last 6-7 years. Doctor suggested Miralax. For last 15 months I am taking 1 dose (17 gr) once day. Although it works, I am scared I will get dependant and that eventually it will stop working. I noticed some slight puffines under my eyes lately. I am also afraid on some impact on my kidneys. I eat mostly - 90% fruit and vegies, very little meat - only fish and chicken, I drink at least 2 l of water daily, do my daily walking. Eating limited amount of bread - only whole wheat. I watch very carely WHAT I eat. No ice cream, no cookies, no beef, no rice, very ltd potatoes, no pasta, no chocolate, no cakes, no pastries. I do everything by the book, I tried Metamucil, but my stool with it is too large and it cost m...

Today is my 5th day taking 17g a day and so far it hasn't worked. Is this normal? Should I continue to take it? ## No, it should have worked by now. Are you on any other medications? Do you suffer chronic constipation? Have you informed your doctor? What other stool softeners or laxatives have you tried? The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. ## On the 6 day now I have the runs. I stopped taking it. I do have hypothyroid I'm on thyroid meds. When I stop for two days I couldn't go again and as soon as I tried it again I got the runs again, I haven't tried anything else. ## I have been on Mirilax for several years. I has never worked good and I have been told to take it 3 times a day. It gives me gas on the left s...

Does MiraLAX expire? And if so, can you use MiraLAX after the expiration date? Also, how much is recommended for a single adult dose? ## Yes, MiraLAX does have a shelf-life and expiration. According to the frequently asked questions on MiraLAX.com, "It is not recommended to use MiraLAX beyond the labeled expiration date.” However, I do think some factors influencing its expected shelf-life or integrity may also depend upon how it was stored as well as how long it has been since the product expired. If it hasn't been too long (e.g. a few months), my personal opinion is that it's probably fine, as expiration dates themselves can be arbitrary numbers, but you're still probably better off getting a new batch if you want to play it safe. Regarding dosing instructions, t...

I successfully completed chemotherapy for uterine/ovarian cancer and had a few side effects. Just when I thought it was safe to start life again, I learned I had a tumor in the vaginal area. I took 35 radiation treatments. I was told to expect some mild side effects, but they have been anything but mild. I developed Radiation Colitis and I became impacted to the point where I was unable to have a bowel movement. I was referred to a Gastrenterologist who prescribed a high dose of Miralax powder mixed in juice in the morning and a high dose of Enulose in the evening. The dosages were way too high and at one point i thought I would lose my insides. I went to the ER where unfortunately, they know me well from previous visits for kidney problems. The Charge Nurse told me it would be at least...

I was just told by my gastroenterologist to start taking miralax. I have taken it for two days and I now have diarrhea. Is this normal when you first start taking it? ## Yes, that can be a normal side effect, according to the FDA, since this is a stool softener. Other side effects may include nausea, bloating, and cramping. Has there been any change or improvement?

I have a new colostomy and must have a colonoscopy that goes to it and my bottom. Other ostomates have said they had a good experience with Miralax as a prep. Has anyone used both Miralax and Prepokik and can you tell me which was easier? Would the result be different for someone with a stoma? Please share your experience and opinions. I am SO nervous. I just had a child on the 10th and the brilliant nurse at the hospital told me to take Miralax when I got home to help move my first bowl movement. Needless to say it transferred to my breastfed newborn and now neither one of us is happy. How long will it take to get out of both our systems? It's been 3 days and it doesn't look like there's a light at the end of this tunnel. ## Hey, first off, congratulations on your new baby! Second, sorry to hear about what you both have been going through! I should say first and foremost that if your infant is having diarrhea then you should let the pediatrician know ASAP since it could be considered a medical emergency for the baby (they can get dehydrated very fast at such a young age). As far as the Miralax goes, there is fairly limite...

I need to take my methadone and I just drank some miralax without thinking, who thinks it won't matter if I take it now? ## Hello, Based on my research from umm.edu, there are no drug interactions listed between Miralax (Polyethylene Glycol) and Methadone. So my theory is that you shouldn't experience any problems with taking the two together. However it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to still give your doctor a call for a second opinion, if you're looking for further validation. I hope this helps! ## Can I take Miralax while I'm on methadone càn someone help me ! Thank u ## Definitely. I'm on methadone but i take a double dose 2x a day. the regular dose is not for drug constipation. You may have to take it a few days for it to work.Good luck
