I was prescribed Topamax about a month ago for migraine prevention. However, I have developed side effects of numbness and tingling in my hands and feet, concentration problems, problems with motor skills, and not much improvement in my migraines. I am going to ask my doctor to stop taking the the Topamax even though he advised that it would take a couple months to completely see the benefits of it. I just can't deal with the side effects and don't expect them to improve unless he says otherwise. I had high hopes for this drug and I'm really disappointed. ## I too was recently put on Topamax for bad headaches. Within the first week noticed sharper pains in my temples, strange pressure behind my eyes, became much more agitated with people and situations-really short fused. (w...

There are a number of warnings about the possible side effects of taking Amitriptyline - some people get one or more, others none at all. In my case I suffered a migraine on and off every twenty four hours for very many years. About 15 years ago I was prescribed this drug (10mg daily) to ease the symptoms and frequency and initially it seemed to make little difference but I have not had a migraine now for some six years - whether it is the Amitriptyline or something else no-one can tell me, but I have continued to take them all this time. The effects of taking them long term appear not to be known, but I am, quite naturally, unwilling to stop in case the migraines return. I have also been very fortunate in that I have had no side effects at all ever since I started taking them. I am jus...

I started 50 mg of Topamax a week ago for migraines. How soon should I start seeing results if it is going to help? So far, the only side effect I have had is some numbness in my feet/hands and carbonated beverages tasting a little different. I was also curious if anyone has had success with topamax helping generalized pain like back or joint pain? ## I was on it fot 4 months for migraine prevention. I had tingling feet off anf on with it. My concern now is that I have double vision from it. I was tsking 25mg/day. ## @Melli, According to a drug monograph for Topamax (topiramate), it may take up to several weeks to start seeing significant changes in your symptoms.. so you may just have to give it a little more time before you can really decide if this medication is even right for you. Had migraine for 20y+, 3-4 attacks pm. Received a tip to take Arthrexin ,1 daily. No more migraine ! Seven months down the line. It's working like a charm ! But I want to know why ? It really changed my life ! Anyone out there had the same ecperience ? ## From what I could gather, Arthrexin (Indomethacin) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) commonly used as a prescription medication to reduce fever, pain, stiffness, and swelling. It has also been shown to be effective in migraine, both for prevention of migraine as well as treating the acute migraine attack. It works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, molecules known to cause these symptoms. This pharmacology may be what's attributing to the success of this medication. I've also come across several...

My Neurologist has suggested Ebixa as a possibility for migraine prophylaxis. Is there any information about its use for migraine? Where can I find some information? Thanks for your help. Lana ## Ebixa contains the active ingredient Memantine, it is approved to treat Alzheimer's Disease. I am not finding any specific details on it being used for migraine prevention, either, however, your doctor is allowed to prescribe something off-label, according to his experience. I see a few articles where people have mentioned the possibility of using it to prevent them, but no details on its efficacy or testing. Have you tried discussing this with your doctor? ## Yes, I did discuss using Ebixa (Namenda) for migraines with my Neurologist, as well as researching it online, however I was just wan...

I just started 25mg nortriptyline for migraine prevention. I was previously on amitriptyline for them and it worked so well, but I was a zombie, couldn't wake up in the morning and had gained 10 pounds. I was always hungry and never felt full. I am hoping that the noritriptyline will have less side effects (at least that's what my doctor tells me). Day 2 of not sleeping. I take the pill before bed and that must be the problem. Does anyone take it in the morning? I'm a little worried that taking it in the morning will still keep me up that night. Also, is 25mg a little high for a starting dosage? ## Hello, JaneCat! How are you? As to your starting dosage, you're not actually starting, you're just switching from one to the other, so you'd not start it at the same d...

I was prescribed 10mg amitryptilyine for migraine prevention. It seems to be helping with the migraines, however, I feel very tired all day and my eyes have bags under them and feel so tired all the time. It has been well over a month since I've started this and the side effects do not seem to be subsiding. Any suggestions?? I love the fact I'm not having the migraines but the side effects I can't handle much longer. ## Hello! How are you? This medication is a tricyclic antidepressant and it can cause REM onset latency, which means you don't enter the REM phase of sleep as fast as normal and spend less time in it than normal, so your sleep isn't as restful. That's likely why you feel so tired and have the bags under your eyes. I found that they improved about 6 w...

Just started Topamax this week (50mg 1X at bedtime) for migraine prevention. It's making me dizzy in a addition to side effects others have noted here like tingling fingers, low grade headache, thirst, upset stomach and mood swings. I've searched but I haven't been able to find any references to "dizziness". Has anyone else had this? My migraines leave me dizzy for days/weeks which is why my doctor decided to try me on Topamax. I don't need any ADDITIONAL issues with balance!! Probably just "my brain" but it would be nice to know if anyone else has this with migraines. ## Side effects are from the topomax. Let your dr. Know you may need to lower your dose or wean off of of them. They are known for many sie effects, numbness forgething things. Slurred spea...

I began Topamax a week and a half ago as a migraine prevention. I am experiencing random facial, hands, and feet numbness. Mental fogginess, dull headaches, and tiredness. For those of you who have had success with migraine prevention and have taken this medication for a long time: How long did your side effects last? I have heard only a few weeks. I'm not sure If I can deal with this constantly much longer. I am contemplating which is the lesser of the two evils side effects vs. migraines. I have lost 10 lbs. though. Any advice? ## I haven't used this medication, but what you are experiencing are normal side effects of it and I can tell you that in most cases, they start to taper off about 4 weeks, as your body adjusts to the medication. Have you consulted your doctor about the...

I am taking sprintec for migraine prevention, not birth control. I typically take 3 months of active pills beck taking a week off to have a period. I missed 3 days in a row during my second pack of active pills. I tried to catch up by taking two a day, but it was too late and a full blown period started. So i stopped taking them in the hopes of letting the period run its course. It has been 5 days of (very) heavy bleeding now, with clots. I have stopped the pill for 3 days now. When should I restart, or should i see if bleeding stops? ## It really would have been best, according to FDA directions, to have continued taking them, this can happen if you miss to many in a row, but should resolve itself, once you complete your next cycle. Other side effects are listed as possibly including n...

I have been taking 10mg of nortriptyline at night for migraine prevention for approximately 7 weeks. Shortly after starting this medication I began to have difficulty swallowing. After I eat I feel as though I have food stuck in my throat. Even the tiny, tiny nortriptyline pill taken with a glass of water sometimes feels stuck. Is difficulty swallowing a common side effect or should I be concerned? ## Hello, Sd26! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having. It sounds like you might be experiencing some acid reflux, many medications can cause it. Have you had this checked out by your doctor, yet? You may need to switch to a different medication, or take something that will help prevent the excess acid. Nortriptyline is classified by the FDA as being a ...

I was prescribed Cymbalta by my doctor for migraines and muscle tension headaches. I have read many of the other pain disorder related discussions...anyone else on this for chronic headaches? ## i take zoloft 150mg and topomax 50mg am and pm for migraine prevention. i know that for me both help. ## Cymbalta is a Selective Seratonin NorEpinephrine ReUptake Inhibitor, not having enough of this in your brain can sometimes cause severe headaches and migraines, so prescribing this type of thing to help treat them is very common. ## no comments ## whats the generic form for cymbalta?8784 ## I prefer TOPAMAX 100mg 2xday with imitrex spray for full blow mirgraines.
