I have been taking Atenolol 50mg for about 4 years to treat my hypertension; it was working wonderfully, but I suddenly had to switch to Metoprolol Succ. ER 3 months ago because of a manufacturer shortage of Atenolol. I took it just as I did the Atenolol: which was whenever I woke up/got my day started, I paid no mind to missing a dose here and there (such as when I felt like sleeping all day) or whether or not I was taking it with a meal---so basically totally wrong. I realize now I was not taking the Atenolol exactly as indicated, but it never posed a significant problem. However, my BP levels are basically where they were before I ever started Atenolol now that I have switched to Metoprolol ER (135/85-150/90 something). The day I went to my doctor for my 3 month checkup (which was 2 ...

Oval pill, scored in the center, marked 358 on the unscored side. Was allegedly supposed to be a generic for Toprol 200 mg. However pharmacist dispensed twice as many as the perscription stated, with no change in directions. Manufacturer does not show this pill on its info. page. ## I should be taking 50 mg tablets however a refill from Walmart has pills marked 831. I am scared to use them. Can I use them?

Daniel Ortiz ## Hello, Dan! How are you? No, the medication you listed under B contains an added ingredient, it combines the Diuretic Hydrochlorothiazide with the Metoprolol. However, you could speak to your doctor about trying it. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, dehydration and hypotension. I never had side effects until they switched manufacturers. Now I have severe bloating. Was wonder if anyone else experienced this? ## That can sometimes be a side effect of this medication, according to NIH reports. It can also cause nausea, dizziness, headache, and increased urination. However, since this symptom does have the potential to cause congestive heart failure, so it would be best to consult your doctor. You may need to take a medication to reduce the fluid and keep you out of danger. Are you on any other medications?

When does it start to release the meds? ## Hi, Bill! How are you doing? It will start to release some within a very short time of swallowing it. What are you expecting from it? This is a beta blocker that's most commonly used to treat high blood pressure and certain cardiac conditions, so you aren't going to experience a radical change immediately. It takes time for these types of medications to reach their full level of efficacy in your body to do their job. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, stomach pain and hair loss. Learn more Metoprolol details here. ## I've been regular metoprolol for almost 7 years. So it will take awhile to kick in? Why do I feel really tried and crappy?

United Healthcare is raising the copay on this ptescription and recommending Metoprolol tartrate, . arvedilol or atenolol. Titled subject is $45 in 2012 vice $3. for alternatives. Are the alternatives safe, same side-effect, and would my doctor have to change the prescription with my supplier? ## Yes, they all pretty much have the possibility of causing the same side effects. However, the Carvedilol is known to cause them far less often than the other options you mentioned. And yes, your doctor would have to give you a new prescription, because a pharmacy can't just change it, without their approval. Here are more details on these medications: Are there any other questions or comments?

I was prescribed this for Afib. ## This medication is listed by the FDA as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotensions. Momma V, how are you doing? Is metoprolol tarta 50 mg the same as metoprolol 50mg? I normally get metoprolol 50mg!! ## It is the same medication, the tarta is for tartrate and is just a long version of the name that designates the chemical salt. Some pharmacies use it on the labels and some don't. Metoprolol is a beta blocker that is used to treat high blood pressure and some cardiac conditions. It may cause side effects, such as: nausea, dizziness, headache and stomach pain. I was taking atenolol until the drug company stopped making them, and my doctor gave me metoprolol as a replacement. Is it ok to take metoprolol when i run out of atenolol? My doctor said it's ok, but I just wanted to double check. ## It is always best to follow your doctor's instructions. While there are no guarantees, it should be a smooth switch from one to the other. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. However, both of these medications are still available, at least for the moment. Where did you hear that Atenolol was discontinued? I am not saying you are wrong, because such information can change in an instance, sometimes it takes awhile for any given database to update. What I can t...

I have taken Mroprolol ER 100mg for eleven years. I have never paid more than $18.00 for a 90 day supply, the last being 90 days ago. Now, it has suddenly gone up to anywhere from $125 t0 $149. I would like to know why there has been the sudden escalation in price. ## Well, this site doesn't manufacture or sell any medications, this is an information only website, so I don't have a direct answer for you, but I can give you some ideas as to why the price may have changed. What pharmacy are you using? If it is a chain pharmacy, such as QFC/Kroger, Walgreens, or most of the ones that have discount drug programs, then it's likely that the prior price you were paying was the discount program price. However, such prices are only set for certain periods of time, such as year, 2 yea...

I took Metoprolol tartrate tabs 50 mg,mfg by greenstone, is this the same drug? ## The 25mg would be a lower dosage and the ER designates the 25mg one as being a time released formulation. Metoprolol is a beta blocker used to treat high blood pressure and cardiac conditions, Did your doctor make this change in the dosing and formulation? Such changes shouldn't be made, without your doctor's approval, because sudden changes to the dosing of this medication may cause rebound effects, which could include elevated heart rate and blood pressure.

Dr. Reddy's metoprolol succ er. RUN AWAY! Or have your doctor change your prescription. I took Dr. Reddy's metoprolol because my new insurance wouldn't pay for the brand I had been taking for 5 years. 6 weeks of waking up everyday with red and swollen feet, achy left pectoral region, a 2x increase in my dress size, and a voracious appetite made me stop my use of it and pay out of pocket for the brand. Within 3 days of being on my old medication, Toprol XL , I was feeling like myself again. ## Hi stevie, Sorry to hear about your experience with Dr Reddy's. However I'm glad to hear that you were able to get back on the Toprol XL again. What's interesting to me is that there's no real way of knowing ahead of time how you're going to react/respond to other br...

I WAS ON LISINOPRIL 10 MG DAILY, THE DOCTOR SWITCHED TO METOPROLOL 25 MG. IS THERE ANY BENIFIT? ## They are two different types of medications, though they are used to treat the same health issues. Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor. Learn more Lisinopril details here. And Metoprolol is a beta blocker. Learn more Metoprolol details here. Sometimes, one medication works better for someone than another, so if your blood pressure was still a little high, your doctor may just feel that you should try something else. Been taking metoprolol 25mg tartrate twice daily and by the time I go to bed and fall asleep by bloodpressure spikes during the night. Don't know if the meds have worn off during the night or if I should be taking another pill before bed. Tried to get a hold of my doctor but he is out on vacation. Does any one else have this same problem. I can tell my bp was high cause when I wake in the morning my eyes are blood shot. ## High blood pressure only rarely causes blood shot eyes, it is especially doubtful if it only happens when you are sleeping and goes away. There are a ton of other causes, however, including disrupted sleep. You shouldn't change this medication, without consulting with your doctor, because too much of it can cause unsafe drops in your blood pressure. Have you c...

I originally had a skipping heart beat which was tested and I was found to have no heart disease. Doctor put me on Metopropol succ er 25 mg tablets once a day to lower blood pressure. I had been taking for about eight(8) months with daily periods of skipping heart beat. My pulse rate had dropped from 74 to 64 times a minute and blood pressure was probably 122/72. When I got the last months supplies of tablets they had what looks like w/b on one side. I do not know what was on previous tablets. All of a sudden my heart is not skipping a beat anymore. Is it possible that the result is due to a change in manufacturer of the pill or is it possibly just a chance occurence? I have also cut back on drinking wine and caffein use. Thank you. ## Is that the complete markings on them? Can you plea...

I started Metoprolol a couple weeks back. It wasn’t completely doing what I needed so my doc doubled it to 50 mgs about 5 days ago. Last night my feet were so swollen. Now I’m scared and I can’t reach my doctor due to this snow here. I don’t know if I should completely stop or take it down to 25 mgs? Help? I was taking 50 mg of Metoprolol Sandoz. Walmart changed it to 50 mg Metoprolol. It is not managing my BP. It used to be a white pill, and is now pink any body else having problems??? ## My pharmacy just switched mine a couple of days ago, I don't know what the deal is. ## What have your BP readings been that lead you to believe it is not managing it? Has anything else changed in your life, recently, such as change in diet, activity levels, or eating habits? Strader10, since this is a generic medication, it is normal for your pharmacy to sometimes switch which manufacturer's product they carry, depending on what company was offering the cheapest price through their distributor at the time they had to restock their supply. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly includ...

Had been taking Cozaar 100 mg, which had my bp under control (ranging from 115/78 to 128/82). Also started back at the gym 2 1/2 months ago. Now up to regular cardio routine totalling 150 mins/ week. No shortness of breath or other problems. I asked the doc if I could step down to Cozaar 50 mg, as the 100 mg was making me feel like my heart ached from time to time. Doc changed to 50 mg Cozaar, but added Metorolol XL 25 mg. First day, I had a bad reaction: dizziness, disoriented. 2 days later, still didn't feel right. Took my bp and it was 150/87 and continued to rise. Went to the ER. They told me I was having a panic attack. Doc ordered a dobutamine stress echo test. Have had mild chest pain and some shortness of breath at the gym on exertion. Passed with flying colors. But bp has r...

I have been taking Metoprolol Succ ER 50 MG from Tasan for 2 years, and now CVS changed my prescription to Taeth. Is it true as CVS stated that Tasan has been discontinued? Has anyone changed from Tasan to Taeth? ## TASAN simply stands for a Tablet manufactured by Sandoz pharmaceuitcals, TAETH means this tablet is manufactured by Ethex pharmaceuticals. I do not know if the other one has been discontinued, but they are the same medication. ## CVS recently changed my 100mg dose of Metoprolol Succ TASAN to TAETH 50 mg x2 - with the same story as you got about TASAN supposedly discontinuing the 100 MG dose. To me it seems they're simply using up their supply so I get to take horse pills times two a day this month.. I mean really thanks CVS lol ## I picked up my metoprol 50mg. At cvs. Mf...
