8/17/17 I've been taking 25mg of Atenolol 3xday for Afib, I have it often, have a pacemaker and on pradaxa (blood thinner). Apparently Atenolol is back-ordered all over the country. My cardiologist prescribed Metoprolol, only 25mg 1xday. I'm switching tomorrow and I'm concerned with enough dosage from Metoprolol. I have googled, can't locate equivalent dosage, can you help? ## It is generally better to follow your doctor's instructions as to what dosage you should take. Since these are in the same medication class, the doses are also sometimes the same. The FDA warns that the side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Have you started taking it, yet? If so, how are you doing?

I take a pill twice a day. Is each pill 50 mg, or combined they equal 50mg? ## Hi Connie, What is the imprint on the pills that you take? There are 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg pills available. Based on your description I can only assume that they are 50mg, but would need to look up the imprint for verification. If you are taking this medication for high blood pressure, the usual dosage for metoprolol is extremely patient specific and should be individualized. The typical initial dosage of metoprolol is 100 mg daily in a single or divided dose as determined by your health care provider. The dose may then be increased weekly until the goal blood pressure is achieved. The dosage range for metoprolol is 100-450 mg per day. You should consult with your doctor to determine which dose of metoprolol ...

My Dr. told me I can just quit the metoprolol, my heart rate sometimes dips into low 40's for a few seconds at night when sleeping. I was put on this years ago for Anxiety, not for any condition... I take 25 MG of the extended release, how much of a low dose is this and whats its affect on heart rate being a small dose, should I expect bad withdrawal issues? ## Hello, Mickey! How are you doing? It is normal for your heart rate to drop, when sleeping and this medication can also lower it, as a side effect, according to FDA reports. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and orthostatic hypotension. That's the lowest dose available, most people start at 25mgs and titrate up, when treating heart conditions, or high blood pressure. There sho...

I was prescribed MT 25mg twice daily by the ER doctor after 3 visits of increased heart rate. Was diagnosed with sinus tarchycardia. It has helped my episodes but my bp has dropped to 94/55. Due to me not having insurance, im not able to get an appt til Dec/Jan. I was wondering if its safe to half my doses because I can tell when its low & I can't keep going to the er. PLEASE REPLY SOON ## Tablets can be cut, or split, unless they are time released formulations and/or your doctor or pharmacist has instructed you otherwise. Are you having any symptoms from your BP being that low, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness and etc? If not, then there is no reason to worry, because those aren't dangerous numbers and are nothing to worry about, unless they are causing problematic sym...

I take a half a pill in the morning after breakfast and half after dinner. Is taking the half after dinner okay? ## It is, as long as your doctor approves and has told you to take 25mgs a day. In most cases, they prescribe it to be taken once a day, due to the fact that it makes more likely that someone will remember to take it and not miss doses. However, in some cases, it does work better for some people to take such medications in split doses. I found that I get much better control of my blood pressure and heart rate by spacing my doses throughout the day. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Is there anything else I can help with?

I am having a cat scan in the morning but I missed my overnight dosage. Would that affect the test in the morning if I take only one Metoprolol? ## No, missing one dose should not effect the results of you CT scan. You can inform them, just to be safe, but being that recent, it shouldn't change anything. Metoprolol is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure, and certain cardiac conditions. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, hypotension, and increased urination. I have been taking bupropion hcl 150 mg and my Dr has prescribed metoprolol succ er 50 mg is there a chance of interaction? ## Based on my research there are potentially unsafe drug interactions that apply to Metoprolol Succinate ER (metoprolol) and Bupropion. Quoted below are the precautions you should be aware of: "Bupropion may increase the blood levels and effects of Metoprolol. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if you experience increased side effects or your condition changes. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor." How are you? I'm very sorry about the problems that you're having. Actually, it would be best to speak to your doctor about trying a different medication. This is classified as a beta blocker and there are several others available that you can try to see if they work for you, without causing as many side effects. The FDA lists the typical ones as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and hypotension. My husband took his Saturday and Sunday evening meds during dinner; pradaxa, metopropal tartrate, and flomax. Is this a huge problem? I'm more worried about the pradaxa. I looked up the metopropal tartrate but could not find pradaxa. ## Hi Patti, According to the University of Maryland Medical Center's drug interaction tool, there is a quote "medium interaction potential" between Flomax and Metoprolol. Their warning denotes the following concerns: *Treatment with both drugs may result in low blood pressure (too low I'm assuming) *Using both together may result in an increased risk of certain side effects *Call your doctor if you feel lightheaded, or have fainting spells They also go on to state that your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of ...

I take metoprolol tart 50mg 1 1/2 tabs daily and I also take Losartan/HCTZ 100-25mg 1 tab daily. I forgot to take my Losartan after lunch and now it is almost suppertime, when can I take the Losartan? ## You should take it as soon as you remember, unless it's into the next day and time for the next dose, then you should skip the missed one, unless your doctor instructs otherwise. Losartan is an ARB that is most commonly used to help treat high blood pressure and certain cardiac conditions. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, increased urination and hypotension. If you have a smart phone, there are many free apps available that will sound an alert, when you need to take your medication, so that can help you avoid missed doses in the f...

My mother began taking Coumadin 2 wks ago. Her INR was 1.9 today, so it's progressing well toward a therapeutic level. Her doctor also increased the dosage of Metropolol when he added Coumadin. She reports that she's been feeling tired and "out of sorts" the past 2 days. She even took a nap today, which is unheard of! Does Coumadin cause generalized weakess and fatigue initially? ## Hello, Dee! How is your mom doing? To be honest, I'm more inclined to think that her symptoms are do to the higher dose of Metoprolol, it's very well known to cause such side effects. Others, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache and increased urination. Coumadin's typical side effects include nausea, headache, dizziness, increased risk of bleeding...

Taking Metoprolol Tartrate 50 mg twice daily along with Losartan Potassium 25 mg once daily. Pulse rate dropping into low 50's and high 40's. I am concerned by the low pulse rate as it causes me to be feel weak and generally unwell. ## Hello, Roadrunner! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having. It is most likely due to the Metoprolol, which the FDA classifies as a beta blocker, it is listed in the detailed side effect information that it is known to do this in some people that take it. Other side effects may include nausea, headache, dizziness, hypotension, increased urination and stomach pain. Have you spoken to your doctor about this issue, yet? You may need to lower your dose, or switch to a different medication. ## No I haven't but I am g...

Beginning about 15years ago, I became aware that I was having palpitaions, later diagnosed as PVCs. It appeared to me that they were slowly becoming more frequent over this time period, but dramatically increased about 2 months ago. Approximately 30% of my beats were PVCs when I wore a monitor for 48 hours about two weeks ago, but no tachicardia. 15 years ago I was only having periods of frequent PVCs about twice a year, and they only lasted a couple hours each time. Way back then, a doctor prescribed atenolol (sp?) for another condition. Upon taking it I immediately started having continuous periods of PVCs that lasted the entire three days that I took the medication. (I discontinued.) During this recent long period of PVCs, I was prescribed a small dose of Metoprolol (Met) daily -- 12...
