What would be safe to take for sleep with taking a heartpill metoprolol.I don't take these as prescribed .I take 1 maybe a day instead of prescribed 2a day.but I can't seem to relax n accept sleep as I should..yvonne ## Hello, Yvonne! How are you? Why aren't you taking them as prescribed? If your heart rate or blood pressure is up and/or your heart function is off, that can affect your ability to sleep. Taking them as prescribed might help resolve this issue for you. In turn, better sleep also helps with blood pressure, heart rate and heart function. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, increased urination and hypotension.

I have been taking Lexapro for the last 10 months. I have recently stopped. This week I feel very light headed, dizzy and absolutley exhausted. I am having difficulty sleeping also. I have had a pretty busy week as I work and I have a daughter of 18 months to look after also. Can you advise me of a course of action please? ## Have you consulted your doctor? Why did you stop taking the Lexapro? It contains the active ingredient Escitalopram, which is an SSRI antidepressant and, after taking it continuously for that long, a sudden cessation will normally result in some withdrawal symptoms and rebound effects, because your body has gotten used to having it. Usually these medications need to be tapered, over a period of time, to help prevent the worst of these problems from occurring. ## I ...

The Dr. started me on metoprolol 25 mg in the p.m. Then when the palpitations and afib came back it went to twice a day a.m. and p.m.. In the last fhree months I have experienced more sleepless nights and anxiety and was blaming it on my nerves....NO, this medicine is not kind to the body or mind in my opinion! I was ready to take an antidepressant until I read all the side effects....not good folk, good luck! ## Yes, unfortunately Metoprolol has been known to cause such issues in some people that take it, though it really isn't that common, but I also had problems with it. Learn more Metoprolol details here. The one I found that works better and causes a lot less side effects is Labetalol, so you might want to consult with your doctor about it. I've been on metoprolol for about 2 months now went to er for anxiety and of coarse my bp was high they put me on metoprolol but im on lisinopril 10 mgs a day since taking metoprolol I've felt awful just sluggish and weak tired aanxiety up can't eat ot sleep just so tired I quit taking it yesterday none today the doctor said I could any more info this please reply ## Hello, Tammie! How are you doing? A sudden withdrawal from the Metoprolol may cause some elevation to your heart rate and blood pressure, as listed by the FDA, but the Lisinopril should help keep it from hitting dangerous levels. Thus, you should be able to stop, as your doctor instructed. But make sure to seek medical attention, if your blood pressure and heart rate do start to go too high. Is there anything el...

If a 20 months old kid takes by mistake an Apo Metoprolol 25 mgs pill, what are the side effects? ## Common side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, tiredness, diarrhea, unusual dreams, ataxia, trouble sleeping, and vision problems. It may also reduce blood flow to the hands and feet, causing them to feel numb and cold; smoking may worsen this effect. I would double check with your physician about this situation. Do you have any more questions or information to add? Please post back if you do. ## Thank you very much Crystal for the answer (Ref. Apo Metoprolol 25 mgs).

I could not sleep the last two nights and wonder if there is a sleep aid safe to take with the metoprolol er succinate that I have been taking in the morning and evening, 25 mg pills. Been taking these b/p pills for months now. ## Hello, Peg! How are you? The main problem with them is that most sleep aids, such as Tylenol PM, Unisom and etc. use antihistamines, which may not always be safe for someone that has high blood pressure, because they can cause further elevations, according to the FDA. Thus, you should not take them, unless your doctor specifies that it is safe for you to do so. There may also be an issue if someone is overweight, since they may cause more weight gain. I have high blood pressure, as well, and suffered full congestive heart failure several years ago, and given t...

Has anyone experienced nightly nightmares that seriously disturb sleep while taking this medication. ## ABSOLUTELY.... I started having bizarre dreams as soon as I started to take it. I then progressed to very vivid nightmares and now I do not want to sleep because of it. Not the wonder drug they say it is. I want off it and as soon as I can convince my doctor, I am getting as far away from it as I can. It also has caused me to gain over 30 pounds and I am far from a couch potato. ## I have insomnia a lot. Nightmares almost every night. and they make me miserable. They seem to go on and on. Headaches during the day. I was a person who never had headaches and was a very sound sleeper. I always joked that you could take the bed out from under me and I wouldn't know it. Not any more! #...

I am also on clonidine 0.1 and propranolol 20 mg for high bp but everytime it is checked it is between 105-115 over 70-80 I also take 2 other dieruetics, furosemide40 once a day and spironolact 100mg once a day. I look forward to hearing if this is all the right mix for getting the ammonia level down ## Hi, Scarab! Sorry about your health problems and this current ammonia issue. Were you still taking the diuretics at the time the test was done? Furosemide is specifically listed as being one that can raise blood ammonia levels and...

I'm so tired... have been taking it for 1 month and getting more tired each day. Is this a side effect? ## Have you consulted your doctor? These can be normal side effects, but they should start to taper off after about 4 to 6 weeks of use. Have you been checking your blood pressure? How have the readings been? ## I have been on metoprolol for about 8 yrs if not more. I did not realize that I've been skipping taking the pill regularly due to my mother passing away and also started taking viibryd a month and half ago. Out of nowhere I started to feel racing heart beats, labored breathing, stiff & swollen fingers, blurred vision, very angry, very very sleepy and more depressed. I thought it was the viibryd which I spoke to my doctor about who wants me to wean off the viibryd n...

Been taking metoprolol 25mg tartrate twice daily and by the time I go to bed and fall asleep by bloodpressure spikes during the night. Don't know if the meds have worn off during the night or if I should be taking another pill before bed. Tried to get a hold of my doctor but he is out on vacation. Does any one else have this same problem. I can tell my bp was high cause when I wake in the morning my eyes are blood shot. ## High blood pressure only rarely causes blood shot eyes, it is especially doubtful if it only happens when you are sleeping and goes away. There are a ton of other causes, however, including disrupted sleep. You shouldn't change this medication, without consulting with your doctor, because too much of it can cause unsafe drops in your blood pressure. Have you c...

I used to take 25mg of metoprolol er succinate for 2 yrs. Dr. Moved up dosage to 50 mg a month ago and I am sooo tired. I take it with dinner around 6 each evening. Would it be ok to take at bed time......afraid if I take it in the morning I'll sleep all day! ## Hello, Emily! How are you? It can be taken at night, as long as your doctor approves. The reason they usually tell someone to take it in the morning is so that it can help control blood pressure and heart rate during the times of a day a person will usually experience the most fluctuations. However, this is the time released formulation, so there should not be a problem. The FDA patient advisory leaflet lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Is ...

My Dr. told me I can just quit the metoprolol, my heart rate sometimes dips into low 40's for a few seconds at night when sleeping. I was put on this years ago for Anxiety, not for any condition... I take 25 MG of the extended release, how much of a low dose is this and whats its affect on heart rate being a small dose, should I expect bad withdrawal issues? ## Hello, Mickey! How are you doing? It is normal for your heart rate to drop, when sleeping and this medication can also lower it, as a side effect, according to FDA reports. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and orthostatic hypotension. That's the lowest dose available, most people start at 25mgs and titrate up, when treating heart conditions, or high blood pressure. There sho...

I was put on metoprolol about 3 weeks ago for hypertension and an ascending aortic aneurysm. I also have PVCs. I take 25 MG every 12 hours. My BP is better but not great. Some readings are normal and most are high (130/90-5 range) I have noticed more heart palpitations since taking it instead of less. I am having intermittent episodes of chest tightness and breathing being more labored. Also have a cough. Feels like a mild asthma attack. In the past, I would get exertional asthma with heavy exercise or laughing. My sleep is worse for waking up with a cough, palpitations, anxiety, or chest heaviness. I also have been hoarse and have a tickle in the back of my throat (postnasal drip?) Are these typical side effects? Do they warrant a reduction in my dosage? I see my cardiologist on Monday...

I was just prescribed this 1x/day to treat palpitations that I frequently get after a meal. Not necessarily the increased heart rate type of palps, but more so the being able to feel every beat in my chest type of palps. What concerns me is that my sleeping heart rate is normally 48-51 and my normal blood pressure often dips to 90s/50s and on the rare occasion can fall to the high 80s/40s. I have never fainted due to low bp, but have often gotten lightheaded upon standing. With starting numbers as low as these, would it be unsafe to start taking this drug? ## Hello, Joe! How are you doing? Have you started taking it, yet? If so, what has occurred? It is odd that this would be prescribed for palpitations that only occur after a meal, since that can be a normal thing for some people due t...
