im from canada. im here visiting. im a diebectic type 2. i have been using mefformin hcl 500. im done with my pills but have metformin a 12. are they both the same pills? ## Hello, Rosemary! Is there anything else I can help with? ## I just got a refill of my metformin HCL 500 mg tabs and noticed a very strong odor coming from them when I open the bottle (never smelled any odor prior - been taking for several yrs). I'm trying to find out if this can be normal. Also never noticed the markings before....the tab is round with an A on one side and a 12 on the other. Is it possible I was given the wrong medication?

While the dosage certainly adds up to 1000mg, there is still a big difference between immediate release formulas and extended (time-released) formulas. The time-released tablets are more geared towards 24 hour - around the clock pain relief; while the standard immediate release tabs are said to be more ideal for short term pain management patients. Whether you take 500mg or 1000mg of Metformin, the time-release effect will always outlast the immediate release effect in terms of longer pain relief (although some patients claim the immediate release formula to have a stronger effect, since it hits you all at once, per say). I've been taking metformin 500 mg tabs for 2yrs and this is the 1st time I've received a pill with 397 on one side and blank on other and it smells really bad. Never had any metformin smell!
