Melatonin is a hormone primarily released by the pineal gland at night, and has long been associated with control of the sleep–wake cycle.[2][4] In vertebrates, melatonin is involved in synchronizing circadian rhythms, including sleep–wake timing and blood pressure regulation, and in control of seasonal rhythmicity including reproduction, fattening, moulting and hibernation.[5] Many of its effects are through activation of the melato...

I need to know if their is a brand out there that puts out a 1mg YELLOW melatonin pill? ## Hello, Plshlp! How are you? Unfortunately, since this is an over the counter product, there is no database of all of the tablets that are available, their descriptions and dosages. It's highly possible that there is a yellow one, but if you aren't sure what it is, then it would be best not to take it. Where was it found/obtained? Maybe that will help to narrow it down, since some over the counter products are regional.

How effective is melatonin for sleep? Appreciate a answer to my query as i'm contemplating melatonin for some of elderly people residing in a old folks home. (btw their ages range from late 60s to late 80s). Is there any other medication for elderly folk with insomnia? Is it advisable for old folks to take sleep medication on alternative nights only to prevent dependency.? Tq for any answer to my query.

my daughter has been taking melatonin along with 150mg.,of trazadone for 2.5 years she has autism and has had violent episodes and complains of aches and pains etc...are these 2 drugs combined becoming dangerous now with the new mood swings, and how to ween from 50mg of melatonin and 150mg.of trazadone ## I was told my U of M pych that long term use of Melatonin can cause moodiness. I have a son with autism and he is in Riperdal. Initially cured sleep problems but seems to not be working as effectively. U of M doctor said trezadone is safer than Clonidine but have not tried it yet. I was told to discontinue the Melatonin - not advisable for long term use. ## It would be best not to change her medication routine, without consulting her physician, since only they can get to the root of wha...

My doctor just suggested since my trazodone isn't working anymore and causing weird dreams to nightmares that I try melatonin. I don't know much about melatonin and if it works. I have no idea on what dosage I should try and if it interacts with any of my other meds. ## Hello, Sunshine! How are you? The dosage is generally anywhere from 1 to 3mgs a night, so if your doctor approves, you may want to start low and see what works for you. What other medications do you take? If you can post back with this information, I can check for interactions or problems for you. The FDA classifies Melatonin as a supplement and it's only known side effect is drowsiness. ## I suffer from really bad insomnia I been taking lunesta for about 15 years and I took trazadone also as a add on. I was ...

I am taking 5mg of Eliquis and 3mg of melatonin each day. Is it safe? I want to take melatonin twice a day for sleeping trouble. Is it okay? ## Melatonin can increase the anticoagulation effects of Eliquis, according to FDA reports, so they should not be taken together, without your doctor's approval. It would be best and safest to consult your doctor about what you can safely take to help with sleep problems. Are you on any other medications?

How much melatonin can you safely take while on 5mg of Eliquis twice a day? ## is there a reaction if you are taking 5mg of eliquise and 10mg on melatonin ## According to The University of Maryland Medical Center (umm.edu / drug interaction tool), there are no drug interactions listed between Eliquis and Melatonin. That said, it would probably be best to inform your prescribing doctor about anything/everything you intend to take alongside what they prescribe you; at least to be on the safe side. One thing is certain though and that is our bodies naturally produce Melatonin, so I don't see how a pharmaceutical would interact with something already naturally occurring within us... unless of course the drug itself is flawed, which many man made substances are... Hope this helps!

My Dr just suggested melatonin to replace my trazodone. Has anyone used melatonin and if so does it work ## Sunshine Melatonin does work, but it is for short term use. It looses its effectiveness very quickly. At first it was great, thought I'd found a replacement for my rx meds that really were not working and giving me horrible restless legs. But it began to weaken, I increased the dose, and after a few days just wasn't working at all. Give it a try may work better for you. Hope this helps. Karen ## @Sunshine, Just wanted to add that one way to increase your body's own natural melatonin production at bedtime is make sure you sleep in complete darkness. Apparently even the smallest sources of light can inhibit this natural response from taking place. There are also quite a ...

I take Melatonin - Usually half a 3 mg. pill each night. I had such bad insomnia and this is really a miracle. I read this article outdoorlifereviews.com/sleep-products/is-taking-melatonin-safe and it was really speaking to me. All I read makes me know it's safe but I just need some reassurance - since I love it so much ## HI, Pat! Glad that it's helped with your insomnia. While Melatonin is generally considered safe and is classified as a supplement, what you do have to remember is that it's actually a hormone. Thus, only proper use is safe and even that could cause some problems for some people. If your doctor has said it is safe for you to take and you're not having any other issues with imbalanced hormones, it most likely is safe for you to continue, but you still ha...

Has there been any work done on using Melatonin as a possible assistor in controlling psoriasis. ## Based on what I've read, there actually have been studies demonstrating Melatonin's promising benefits for managing psoriasis. According to an article on Livestrong, "It is suggested that the role of melatonin in psoriasis should probably be further investigated, as it appears that this hormone might be linked with two other hormones (growth hormone, also known as GH, and prolactin), which also appear to be lower in patients with psoriasis." I would keep in mind though that melatonin and other natural supplements shouldn't be used to replace any drugs or therapies recommended by your doctor. However from personal experience, I know that a healthy diet may also improve ...

I've been on trazodone for 2 weeks but quit taking it 24 hours ago. Is it safe to take melatonin now? ## According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (umm.edu / drug interaction tool) there are no interactions listed between Trazodone and melatonin. Also, our bodies naturally produce melatonin at night. So if there were to be an interaction, no one would be able to take their Trazodone at night or while napping in a dark room. I'm not trying to sound facetious, but in my honest opinion there really shouldn't be any problem with this combination, otherwise Trazodone would be rendered useless for all humans.

Can someone tell me what the relationship between Gabapentin and Melatonin is? I’m slowly tapering up to taking 300 mg of Gabapentin 3 xs a day and am weaning off Ibuprofen this week. My Pain Management Specialist wants me to lower my pain level to make life more dueable as well as minimizing any variables at the same time. Currently I’m taking 5 mg of Melatonin and have been taking this for 5 years in order to sleep more than 3 hrs at a time (been on Gabapentin for 3.5 months and had no differences with sleep schedule afterwards). Do I need to wean off Melatonin while slowly increasing Gabapentin? I know that the pain will decrease. ## Melatonin is a supplement that is used to restore a normal sleep cycle, so there are no known warnings about taking it with a prescription m...

I have not slept at all for over a week and have been prescribed circadin 2mg tablets. How long before these start to work and can they become addictive? Thank you ## Hello, Brian! How are you? This is actually a supplement, Melatonin is a substance naturally present in the body and supplementing it can help restore someone's natural sleep cycle, thus, it is also not addictive. The FDA lists its only common side effects as including drowsiness and dizziness. Is there anything else I can help with?

I was given the ok to try melatonin. I took the first tablet last night and had a headache, nausea, and kept waking up with nightmares all night. I heard and read of drug interactions and that melatonin will decrease in your body naturally when you take melatonin so you keep the same level in your body. I also read that it can backfire in that your body has adjusted its level of melatonin down and when you stop taking supplement melatonin you may end up with insomnia. I was just wondering if anyone else had bad dreams when taking this? ## What dosage is the one you took? Are you on any other medications? Have you talked to your doctor about taking Melatonin? ## Well I took half of a 3 mg - so 1.5 mg. Yes I talked to my doctor and with the other medications I take she said it was okay.

Hi all!! I have a 19 yr old son who needed to sleep. His friends recommended melatonin. He took 5 mgs. About an hour after he took it, he said he woke up feeling bad - - "waves" like he was on the ocean, sweating, felt like "I was dying". He has major depression and stopped taking meds about 2 yrs ago bc they were making him feel worse. I know melatonin works on serotonin levels in some way and was wondering if anyone else had experienced anything similar? He said he was restless all night but every time he woke, he felt like he'd slept for 8 hrs. Idk whether he should ever take another one!! ## That is rather odd, Melatonin supplements usually only cause drowsiness, and occasionally some mild nausea, in people that take it. It is a substance that is naturally presen...

Two of my boys have autism and sleep disorders. I wanted to try liquid melatonin with them but was advised by their psychiatrist not to. This (he says) is because it can interact with SSRI's that they are taking (fluvoxamine) and result in Serotonin Syndrome. I cannot find any information about this anywhere and was wondering if anyone has heard of this contraindication. ## I haven't found any information on this either, but since he is a doctor, he may be aware of more modern research into it that isn't available to the public yet. The details I've found state that the SSRIs actually can make the Melatonin be ineffective, so it's really pointless to try to use them together. Did he suggest anything you can try to help with the sleep issues? ## imho psychs are not do...

Sometimes my fiancee and i take a melatonin supplement that we got from Whole Foods in order to help us fall asleep. Personally I find that it works very well - and I feel relatively safe taking it because it is natural and not a "drug" per say... However I am just wondering if anybody else has experience or information about taking melatonin. From what I understand it is already produced naturallly by the body, so i wonder how they are able to synthesize this substance. I don't take it very often, just on days where I have to reset my sleep schedule. Any thoughts?? ## I took some the other night and it still took me awhile to fall asleep. I just had a complete hysterectomy abdominal incision. Can I take 3mg melatonin and one 5/325mg percocet? ## Hello, Connie! How are you? It would be best to check with your doctor, before combining these, since both the Oxycodone and the Melatonin increase sedation. It could be too much for you and may put you in danger. The FDA classifies Oxycodone as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?
