What do those initials stand for? ## It's a class of medication, a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor, they are a type of antidepressant. ## I would be shocked, but not surprised, if you were prescribed such powerful medication without a detailed, clear explanation of its side effects. It is unfortunate that many doctors treat patients with mental illness like children, incapable of understanding their own condition and medications. If this happened to me, I would find another doctor. And never take drugs from someone else's prescription. it is not only illegal but can be deadly. Note: I am a complete layman. What kind of drug is Citalopram and does it contain MAOI? ## MAOI is not an ingredient, it is a class of drugs and no, Citalopram isn't in that drug class. Citalopram is in the drug class of Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitors. Some of the most common side effects include: drowsiness, dry mouth, headache and nausea.

My wife experienced alarming bradycardia (heart rate <50 bpm), weakness and dyspnea after only 5 doses of Multaq. She has been a long time user of the antidepressant Nardil. International package inserts (PI) disclose inhibition by MAOI's of Multaq's metabolic clearance. Regrettably the US PI does not disclose this potential for drug interaction. I have urged both Sanofi and the US FDA to correct this omission of useful information. ## In response to your request for more information: Heart rate returned to the normal range (~75 bpm) within 5 days of discontinuing Multaq.
