Just started triple tx on nov 5, 2012. Two weeks test shows platelet count dropped from 149 to 109. Doc said we'll watch it . Is this normal? ## I started the triple therapy on 9/21/12 and my platelets were low even before I started (140). I am week 10 and my platelet count is 53. What almost stopped me (other the side effects) was my WBC which fell to 2. Here is my story, I have has HepC for 25 years and have been through two other treatments. First the Interferon, nothing. Then, in 2003, the Pegasys with Ribroviran. My viral load went undetectable after a month but came back making me a relapse patient. Now on the triple death therapy I am virus free after week 8 but I am not celebrating yet. When I started in September I had no side effects until week four. Then the hemmoroids ca...

I have had problems with my platelets. They dropped to 19,000 should be 140,000 or more. My immune system is not recognizing them and they are being destroyed. It was great for my asthma, but not for my immune system. Should there be blood tests done regularly while on this drug? It is rare but it an happen known as thrombocytopenia purpura. ## Hello, Terry! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem you had. As to the blood work, it's usually not done, when a possible issue is so rare. Otherwise, a lot of money would be spent to check millions of people for an issue that almost never happens. The typical side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, cough, difficulty swallowing fever and headache. Have they given you any treatment options? ## No just take my in...

I'm looking for advice on how to keep my platelet's stable or increase them, does anyone have any helpful information? please!! ## my platelet count is at 79 and I'm trying to increase it or keep it stable so I can start the Hep C Sovaldi and ribavirin treatment does anyone have any words of wisdom for me please ## Hi Dee, According to an article by Livestrong.com, there are actually many nutrient dense foods which can naturally increase the levels of your platelet (thrombocyte) count; namely leafy green vegetables such as kale and parsley. More specifically, some important nutrients that are often touted for their use in achieving a higher platelet count consist of Folate (vitamin B-9), B12, Calcium, Potassium, and Zinc. So perhaps a quality whole-food multivitamin and mine...

i feeling week i know i have low blood platlets but dont wanna stay in the hospital to get them what med is good for this ## Hello, Martin! How are you? I am sorry about the way you're feeling. However, there are other things that could also cause you to feel weak, so you need to have this checked out to be sure. It could be dangerous to treat for low platelets, if that's not what you really have. Are there any other questions or concerns?

My husband is currently taking 2 shots of Lovenox a day. I believe each is 125mg? He went to his hematologist the other day and it was found that his platelets are decreasing. Could Lovenox cause this? I really hope not because they state since he was on Coumadin/Warfarin for more than 20 years, that the Coumadin no longer provided the effects necessary to keep his blood thinned out to prevent blood clots. ## Yes, Lovenox has been known to cause that, he may require a dosage adjustments, or to try a different medication. Does he also watch his diet? While on a blood thinner, he should stay away from dark leafy greens, such as spinach, that contain a lot of vitamin K. Some other medications, and foods, may also cause additional blood thinning. Is he taking anything else?

I have low platelets count, can wysolone will help me to increase my platelets ## Yes, this is often the first resort medication to treat this condition. The U.S. FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, acne, weight changes and insomnia. Is there anything else I can help with?

I'm taking levothyroxine 75 mcg since about 10 years and now my platelets counts are lower than normal since about 3 years. I just read that this medication can be the cause. I never had symptoms of thyroid problems, the doctors prescribe the medication after having my check up blood test. Beside that I am very healthy, eat well, not overweight and exercise regulary. Do you think there is a way to get out of this medicine and go with something natural. I hate taking pills! ## If you don't have a thyroid problem, why are you taking it? I'm afraid that I'm confused on this. It is never a good idea to take a medication that you don't really need. But no, I've not found such a thing listed among the detailed side effects for this medication. They usually include naus...

My platelet counts have been jumping down very fast at times lately, then going back up - so far. Has anyone had experience with low platelets when taking pantoprazole or another PPI? If so, how did it behave over time? So far mine are not dangerously low, but I'm nervous. ## Pantoprazole has been known to cause that in some people that take it, as a side effect, according to FDA reports, though it isn't common. Other side effects may include nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and headache. Are you on any other medications? Have they considered any other reasons for this to be occurring?

Dear Doctors, My father has been taking Mazetol for about 10 years , for treatment of Trigeminal neuralgia. His platelets have come down slowly over this period of time from 100,000 to 50,000. Does anyone else face this platelet reduction due to Mazetol ? What is the way to ascertain that reduction is caused by Mazetol? What are the alternate medicines? Please advise asap. Thanks a million, Regards,

Hi, I have been using wellbutrin sr 1n the dosage of 200 to 250 mg daily for about 9 months.2 week ago my blodd test showed very low platelet count 10-15, Could this be related to the use of wellbutrin. Please give your comments. Thanks ## Hi, Sahmed! How are you? And yes, from some studies I've found doing a search, Bupropion, which is the active ingredient in Wellbutrin, as well as several other antidepressant class medications can cause changes in the platelet count in some people that take them. Bupropion is not as prone to causing it as the others, but it did do so in some test subjects. Have you consulted your doctor about it? You may need to try a different medication.

A new drug by the name of Tavalisse (fostamatinib disodium hexahydrate) is reportedly being investigated for use in treating adults with a low platelet count due to chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) when other prior treatment options have fallen short. Chronic immune thrombocytopenia is described as an autoimmune bleeding disorder. In patients with ITP, the blood doesn't clot as it should because of a low platelet count. According to clinical trials, more patients who were treated with Tavalisse achieved pre-determined platelet counts, in comparison to patients who received a placebo. FDA APPROVAL DATE: April 17th, 2018 MANUFACTURER: Rigel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Can Aztor 20 lower you platelet count? My platelet count was 281 last week and the only change in my medication was that I have been advised to switch from rose day 10 mg to Aztor 20. My platelet count in a span of 8 to 10 days has dropped to 128. Do Aztor tablets contain Atorvastatin? ## Yes, that is the active ingredient in them, and yes, it has been known to cause this as a side effect, according to NIH reports. After using Temodar for 6 weeks (for brain tumour) my sons white blood cell, platelet count dropped dramatically. For 2 months in 0,03 range. Started picking up the last month. Reaching 0.69 at highest. Been in hospital 3 months now. Did a bonemarrow biopsy 1 month ago. After the 2 months a bonemarrow biopsy was done and shown 5% activity. But after the biopsy the dr said he convinced the bonemarrow showing more activity. It's been going up so slowly every week. We keep a chart. We not keen for a bonemarrow transplant now as he has been very sick with infection twice. Want to give him all the chance to see if he can recover by himself. Are there patients that share the same story?

My blood panel was all good except my platelets were low - 99. I'm on a 3rd round of augmentin clavanate for cat bite and then sinusitis. Would the medicine cause this? Last time it was 196. ## Hello, Peaches! How are you? It may just be due to the infection, IE: your sinusitis. Your doctor should recheck, once it has cleared up to see if the situation corrects itself. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?
