What are the side effects of low dose Naltrexone if taken long term? ## Hello, June! How are you? The typical side effects associated with regular use, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, dizziness and drowsiness. Long-term side effects may include issues, such as depression, sleep disorders, suicidal ideation and hepatic injury. Is there anything else I can help with?

Oxytrex is an investigational drug currently in clinical trials. It combines the well known opioid agonist oxycodone in the treatment of pain with an ultra-low dose of naltrexone, an opioid antagonist. Naltrexone can have markedly different pharmacokinetics at ultra-low doses which may include, the attenuation of a pre-established opioid tolerance, the prevention of tolerance from the oxycodone in the formulation, and the possible amplification of oxycodone. It is being developed by Pain Ther...

please explain Naltrexone can have markedly different pharmacokinetics at ultra low doses which may include the attenuation of a pre-established opioid the prevention of tolerance from the oxycodone in the formulation, and the possible amplification of oxycodone ## Think of it as wiping the slate clean. Thats what naltrexone does to the opiod receptors thereby "erasing" tolerance and making the receptors more sensitive again ## @John, I don't know if you may be looking for a second opinion on this, but I think the previous post does a good job of putting into perspective how Naltrexone works to prevent the tolerance of opioids. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, a 100mg dose of Naltrexone is said to provide a 96% blockade by the time 24 hours have passed, an...

I was prescribed Contrave for weight loss. I also have a injury to my right upper arm and shoulder that has made me unable to move my my arm more than 6 inches forward, backwards and out to the side without causing horrible pain. My doctor prescribed Tramadol and occasionally Vicodin for pain relief. Fast forward 5 yrs. Opiod crisis. Doctor stops my prescription. Go thru withdraw and Pain is none stop. Enter Contrave...with it's LDN (low dose naltrexone & bupropion) Within a week the pain is subsiding. On week 4 it's gone! No more pain..I can move my arm as if it had never been injured. I read about LDN (opiod antagonist used to treat opiod addicts by stopping the effects of opiods...and yet it also seems to relieve some kinds of pain like migraines and fibromyalgia). I am w...

I got horribly constipated about 5 days after starting naltrexone 50mg. So I stopped. Are there any known methods of taking naltrexone and preventing constipation? BTW, I have a good diet and never get constipated. ## I take a stool softener plus laxative in the morning and night time. I have the same problem so I asked my local pharmacy and that's what they recommended. Hope this helps. ## Oh this is so interesting, I take low-dose naltrexone, 0.5 mg in the morning, and it gave me diarrhea every day for the first seven days, then it stopped. I only get constipated on the days I don’t take it, but I think that’s because I also take oxycodone three times a day so when I don’t take the LDN in the morning it’s almost like my body is opioid naïve again. ## W...

Do they still make and/or use this antagonist? I hear a lot of people talk about Naloxone. I thought Naloxone was for overdose and Naltrexone was a stronger antagonist or what they say is a "blocker". ## I take low-dose naltrexone for MECFS, so my dose is 0.5 mg not the 50 mg of the usual tablet. I get it from a compounding pharmacy and they make it with pure Naltrexone powder they get from China or India or something. People must be taking the 50 mg tablets though because I know the pharmacies carry those still, some compounding pharmacies will be able to get your LDN covered by insurance by getting a 50 mg tablet for making it your correct dose, so I know it’s still exists. I just don’t know anybody who takes it.

I just started Naltrexone. The dosage is 1/2 of a 50 mg tablet 2x per day. I took my second dose early this morning. I feel really weird. Light-headed, groggy and a little dizzy. I also keep having urges to stretch and yawn like when I first wake up from a deep sleep. I am taking this for alcohol and appetite, It did greatly diminish my desire for alcohol and food after my first dose yesterday so I really want to continue. Will this get better? I can hardly function this morning. I am wondering if a much lower dose would be effective for me. ## Most side effects will go away, once your body gets used to the medication, but that may take 4 to 6 weeks. If they persist beyond that, then you should consult your doctor, you should also do so, if your symptoms become severe. The FDA lists oth...

History - My brother has been on Tramadol for the past year or so, he has tapered the dose down slowly over the past 2 weeks to reduce withdrawal symptoms. He’s been tramadol free 2 nights now with some residual insomnia. The restless leg has finally resolved thankfully. He is also struggling with chronic daily drinking and wants to start the sinclair method / low dose naltrexone. He has been on Adderall for the past 13 years for ADD. For the past month, his current dose has been low at 7.5 to 15 mg per day, and some days he doesn't even take any. He plans on discontinuing that as well. How long after being Tramadol free can he start Naltrexone? And can he start it while on Adderall? Please, any advice or experience is appreciated. THANK YOU :) ## The Tramadol needs to be full...

The naltrexone in the suboxone does not do anything. It is in there to prevent a user from injecting the suboxone. That is the only way it will have any effect. When you put the suboxone under your tongue the buprenorphine is absorbed, not the naltrexone. The buprenorphine is what blocks other opiates (this is due for its high affinity for the mu opiate receptor.) If you are on a low dose of suboxone (4mg or less) then expect it to block at least partially for 24 hours. I never post but I use these forums to educate myself. I hate reading clearly false posts. Another user that mentioned that the naltrexone blocks for 72 hours has no idea what they are talking about. I am taking a VERY low dose of naltrexone for an addiction to k8 dillaudids, and other various opiates. I have the 50mg tablets. I quarter the tablet so really only taking 12.5 mg of the naltroxene at a time. My question is this. I didn't dose at all yesterday, but this morning I took the 12.5 mg quarter of naltoxene. If I use dillaudid today will I feel the effects? ## Hi Jewels, Based on my research, the half life of naltrexone is reported to be 4 hours and its active metabolite "6 beta-naltrexol" is listed at 13 hours. This means if you had 12.5mgs, after 4 hours half of that (6.3mgs) will have passed through your system, and then half of that half (3.2mgs) and so forth (not including the active metabolite). I'm not going to get into all the mathematics though, becaus...

I will be soon starting on treatment with low dose naltrexone at 4.5 mg for my fibro and chronic pain and to build up my immune system which my chemo is destroying. Dexomothorphan and codeine both interefer with the naltrexone so am searching for something I can take with my chronic coughs from upper respiratory infections so I can get some sleep. ## Hello, Sue! How are you? I'm sorry about the health problems you've been having. I couldn't find anything listed under the name Tussent. Can you please double check the name/spelling and post back? Is this something that was prescribed, or is it available over the counter? Naltrexone is listed by the FDA as being an opioid receptor agonist and its most common side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and abdo...

Reluctant to switch from a 20 mg norco 3x a day for years to the Low Dose Naltraxone. I understand that the LDN may not have side effects in itself but I'm worried about withdrawaling from my Dr prescribed opiates. Does the LDN soften the withdral? ## Why are you being put on the Naltrexone? It's not an analgesic and if you take it too soon after taking opiates, it can actually throw you into dangerous precipitated withdrawals. I'm sorry, but I'm a not quite understanding what's going on here. Naltrexone is usually used to help people stay off of opiates or alcohol. Along with withdrawals, its other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness and stomach cramps. ## Ldn is used in doses from 1.5 mg to 4.5 mg for immune syst...

Does anyone know what the new Oxytrex tablets look like? ## Hello Mary! How are you? Oxytrex is not available, yet. It is currently still in clinic trials. It combines Oxycodone with a low dose Naltrexone and so far, has shown to provide better pain relief, with less risk of physical dependence. The FDA classifies it as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Do you have a tablet you're questioning? If so, please post back with the markings and description, so I can research it for you. Thanks! ## Looks like an oxycodone green 15 ir. I have bad nightmares and a fever blister on my lower lip. I take 90mg contrave. Can I cut the dose in half? ## Contrave is time released, so you should not split the tablets. You would normally find a score line on tablets that can be split, but there is none in this case. NDC: 51267-890 "CONTRAVE should be taken by mouth in the morning and in the evening. The tablets should not be cut, chewed, or crushed. Total daily doses greater than 32 mg/360 mg per day (two tablets twice daily) are not recommended. In clinical trials, CONTRAVE was administered with meals. However, CONTRAVE should not be taken with a high-fat meal because of a resulting significant increase in bupropion and naltrexone systemic exposure" Ref: DailyMed

Both subutex and suboxone will cause precipitated withdrawal. It is the bupe that connects to the receptors and kicks the methadone out. Naloxone is just an extra blocker!! I am a social worker at a clinic. Waiting at least 12 hours only if on low dose 20mg or less should b OK. But 24 preferred. ## If you take a little less then half of a 8mg subutext 15 hours ago is it safe to take 20mgs of methadone does anyone know! ! ! ## Why do people always minimize Naloxone? EMTs give the ODs Narcan, which brings the patient into withdrawal. Naltrexone (Vivitrol) has been used with chronic opiate addicts and alcoholics in several forms, pill, 30 day shot, implant. It is a VERY strong blocker and has many side effects. I have personal experience with this medication & know that it is not somet...

Can I still take Trazodone at night when I take Contrave? I have insomnia and can’t sleep without Trazodone. ## Combining the two medications can create a risk of your experiencing potentially dangerous seizures, because the Bupropion doesn't play nice with the Trazodone, and combining the Trazodone with the Naltrexone increasedsyour risk of experiencing liver damage. You can use this interaction checker, and others that are available to read more details. What has your doctor advised? You may need to take a very low dose of the Contrave, or try a different medication for insomnia.
