My mom is in the hospital & is being given Dilaudid through her PCA. She thinks she's allergic to the medication. Is there any other pain med given in a PCA/IV form she could try? ## What types of problems is she having that makes her think she's allergic to it? Dilaudid is a very potent narcotic and usually the first line choice in most hospitals now for IV pain relief. However, there is a difference between being allergic to something and suffering from side effects. If she is allergic, someone in the hospital caring for her would have noticed immediately, because there'd be signs such as swelling, skin rash and difficulty breathing. Learn more Dilaudid details here. However, if she's just suffering from dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and other similar symptoms, tho...

I was in the hospital last year and was given a shot for pain right after surgery. I had a terrible reaction to the med. I would know the name if someone called it out, but don't seem to remember any other way. I almost died from the drug, I am having surgery on Tuesday and need to avoid that drug!! Could anyonegivealist of IM drugs? ## There are far too many to possibly list them all here for you. What type of reaction did you have? Learn more analgesic details here. What hospital did you have the surgery at? They should have that information listed in your records, so finding out what medication it was should be as simple as calling them to ask.

Am having hip replacement & need to find a pain medication that won't have any side effects with the Nardil ## Hello, Babe! How are you? I'm sorry, but I've checked many via the interaction checked from MedScape and I'm not finding any. However, in the hospital, it may be different after the surgery, because they can monitor you. So, they may know of something they can give you that isn't as risky. Has your doctor had any ideas? Sometimes, they will have you go off of the Nardil for awhile, before doing surgery. The FDA lists Nardil as being used to treat depression and it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, weight changes postural hypotension. ## THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

looking for a full list of pain medications ## I'm not sure how complete this list may be, but posted below are quite a few prescription pain medications I came across (as of 2012). I'm trying to identify a medication that my aunt had been on. She called it "petapit". Can you help me identify it? She thinks it is for pain. ## No, I'm sorry, but I've tried glancing through lists of analgesics, as well as just general medications and I can't find anything with a name even similar to that. Do you happen to know if it was over the counter, or prescription? How long ago was she on it?

How long do I have to get records to the doctor before being seen? I need to know what all I need to bring at the time of my visit/appointment? ## Hello, Trey! How are you? There is no specific time frame set in stone, it can vary from doctor to doctor. However, I would recommend giving them at least a week, that way they have time to peruse your records, before your first visit. A doctor normally wants to be fully informed, before they write any prescriptions for a patient. For your first appointment, the NIH recommends that you take a copy of your most recent records, in case they have no received them, plus a list of any medications you are currently taking. Their office should also be able to tell you what they need. Can anyone else provide advice?

weakest to strongest pain medications ## LoLo Go to: Wikipedia and search Opioid Comparison ## Yes, there are really far too many for anyone to list them all and compare them for you, especially with your lack of specificity. If you restrict it to opiates, as capt ekim talked about searching for, then that narrows the list a bit, but in regards to general analgesics there are many on the market, both over the counter and prescription only medications. Additionally, there's no way to really know which will be stronger or weaker for any given person, since medications can affect everyone differently. For example, I get completely whacked out sick from some that work great for other people and their best choices don't do anything to help me with pain. Are there any other questions ...

What pain med can I take while taking sulfamethoxazole? I wanted to take something for pain and all I have is naproxen. Can I take it while taking this medicine or an ibuprofen 800mg? ## The University of Maryland Medical Center (umm.edu) has a drug interaction tool you can use to plug in and check for interactions between various medications. I went ahead and looked up the combination of Naproxen + Sulfamethoxazole as well as Ibuprofen + Sulfamethoxazole and didn't find any warnings listed. While this does not necessarily mean that no interactions exist, I personally haven't come across any specific details stating otherwise. However, if in doubt, it's always a good idea to double check with your doctor first. If you happen to have any other types of pain medication in mind...
