Lexapro And Weight Gain

Today I visited my new family doctor. I began to explain to her that after starting my new job a year and half ago, I began to have the "normal signs of depression"- no motivation to do the things I normally loved doing (actually, no motivation to do much of anything), fatigue, memory loss, brain fog, not much of a libido (I'm 24 with a fiancé), etc. but never suicidal. I have a wonderful life, seemingly I am happy with everything, a great family so I guess depression actually isn't something one must "admit" and have a "bad life" which I had generally thought. (That's ignorance I know but now I do understand depression a bit more after reading up on it.) Anyway, my doc suggested Lexapro for an antidepressant and anxiety med. (Currently, I've...

hello, my son is 12 and started taking lexapro 3 weeks ago with the titrating taking a week. Prior to lexapro he was on Prozac, we are very connected to his psychiatrist and we both felt that it was no longer doing the job targeting his minor OCD and his depression. My question for those in the know is this "is there really scientific evidence that there is a significant amount of people, specifically teenage boys who gain weight while on this medication?" I monitor what he eats to a degree but he is a 12 year old boy! I do not see him being more hungry but then again I reference the fact that he is a preteen--he is eating more and has gained some weight over the past 4-5 months so I cannot point to the lexapro. What i can say is that in the short time he has been on it the mino...

Has anyone experienced weight gain and are any of you just feeling stuck or unmotivated? I take 20 mg a day and feel bored. When I take Wellbutrin, Prozac and Topomax it made me mean. ## I take Lexapro 10 mg a day and I have gained excessive weight. I have tried Celexa, which I loved. I felt so good the first nine months I was on it, but guess what, it causes excessive weight gain with prolonged use. I have also been on Zoloft, which helped the depression, but I did not feel anything. Everything in my life was whatever. Kind of like the stuck feeling you are describing. I wish there was something that does not cause you to gain weight, lets you feel motivated, and has low sexual side effects. Any clues anyone ## I have taken Paxil and Lexapro. Now I am on Wellbutrin XL and feel great. M...

Hey, I have been on brintellix I would say for about 2 months. I am on the 10mg daily. I myself have experienced horrible migraines and nausea, though I have also experienced weight gain. I was taken off lexapro due to mild weight gain on it and was switched to this medication bc I was told there would be no weight gain. I am contemplating taking myself off of this medication due to this issue as well as the horrible migraines ## Hello, Cyrena! How are you? Weight gain is not a listed side effect, as reported by the FDA, however, there is no way to know how any given medication will possibly affect any person that takes it, because we are all different. Its typical side effects do include the headaches and nausea that you experienced, as well as diarrhea and flushing. Are you on any oth...

I am switching from Lexapro to Zoloft and was wondering about weight gain. Has anyone had problems with weight gain while taking Zoloft? ## I found it is almost impossible to lose weight when you are on Zoloft. When I go off Zoloft, my weight falls quite easily. But when I go back on, I do experience weight gain. ## Yes, weight gain is a normal side effect of most SSRI antidepressants. There are two reasons for this, one is the effects of the drug on your body and the second is due to the fact that some people who suffer from depression and other mental illness issues, do not eat properly and when these drugs help them to feel better, they find their appetite returning and their eating habits improving. The good news is that the weight gain is not severe and you weight will not continue...

Hi guys I've been on 30 mg of lexapro and the side effects of fatigue and tiredness have not gone away after 4 years. I just kinda dealt with it but now I wanna switch medicine. My dr offered me Zoloft or pristiq. I have social anxiety and OCD and GAD. Any suggestions would be helpful or if you switched to another medicine and it helped. Thanks and God Bless ## Hello, John! How are you? I've taken Zoloft before and found it to work quite well, though it can cause drowsiness, as a side effect, I found that to only last a short period of time. The worst issue that I've known most people to have with it is weight gain. The FDA lists other possible side effects as including nausea, dizziness, headache and dry mouth. Can anyone that's on Pristiq chime in? ## John, I have trie...

I had severe anxiety problems for the first time in my life late last year and found it very difficult to function. I tried for four months to fight it on my own and by using Ativan. I knew Ativan was not a healthy long term answer but was bothered by the prospect of using a SSRI. Finally with no progress I decided to start using Lexapro as I had heard it had the least amount of side effects and had the least withhdrawl symptoms when ceasing the medication. I noticed some progress within 2 weeks and was 100% anxiety free after 5 weeks. Today I feel "normal" and am anxiety free. I have been taking 10mg Lexapro for a little over 2 months. My doctor wants me to continue it for the next 6 months and then I will wean off of the drug. I have gained some weight while taking it but must...

I was diagnosed with MS in 2008 and have panic and anxiety disorder. I was put on lexapro in 2009 and have been on it for six years and it has so helped with my anxiety and panic, I do still get anxiety if I over do it, but I am able to brush it off easily. I would say it helps OK with depression, and due to weight gain, which I'm sure my MS does not help with that it kinda makes it worse but bearable cause I do well wanting to go out and do things. Well, I decided to wean off under my doctor's supervision in April just to see what would happen and he put me on a very long and safe taper. When I got down to just taking 5mg every other day, the panic attacks and depression started to creep back on. I decided I can't handle this on top of my MS so again, under my doctor's ...

I'm going into my 3rd week of Lexapro 10mg and my anxiety has gotten better. However, mornings are still tough with anxiety. Can anyone tell me when that goes away or when it becomes manageable. I don't expect anxiety to go away completely, but I don't expect to be as agitated in the morning. ## Hello, Brownstone88! How are you? I've found that it usually starts to improve around 21 days and goes away after about a month. If this symptoms continues past that, you should consult your doctor as it may not be the right medication for you. The FDA classifies Lexapro as being an SSRI antidepressant and its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, weight gain and mood swings. Is there anything else I can help with?

I took Lexapro for 4 years and have been off it for 6 years. I was reading some of the symptoms and withdrawal symptoms of Lexapro and I still have some of those at least a few times a month. I have horrible sugar cravings and have had a very hard time loosing weight. I gained 20 pounds off the bat and the sugar cravings were ridiculous. Now that I am off it, I still can not loose the weight, and I still have horrible sugar cravings. I am very active, eat healthy. Along with a few other symptoms. Anyone else have symptoms after being off Lexapro for years? ## After being off of it for years, you should not still be experiencing side effects or withdrawal effects from this medication, according to FDA reports, they usually tend to improve and go away, after about a month, or so, of stopp...

Hello. I have been on Lexapro 20mg since July. At my last check up my blood pressure was extremely high and I had gained 17 pounds. My doctor did blood work which came back perfect. She determined it was my Lexapro and changed it to Trintellix. I started it a week ago. I've experienced the nausea but it isn't unbearable. Today, especially this afternoon, I am so grumpy! Agitated. Do you think this is normal? ## Yes, those symptoms can be normal, if you abruptly stop one medication in this class and start another, according to the FDA. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, weight changes, and dry mouth. How are you doing now? Has there been any change? Generally, I've found most side effects to last about 3 weeks, or so.

I HAVE BEEN ON PRISTIQ FOR 2 MONTHS AND I HAVE LOSS 20 POUNDS. MAYBE WEIGHT LOSS OR WEIGHT GAIN DEPENDS ON HOW YOU DEAL WITH YOUR DEPRESSION ## I was on Lexapro for 7 years and have suffered tremendous weight gain. Since switching to Pristiq the first week of August, my appetite has been under control and I'm eating much more sensibly. ## Effexor - the last version of pristiq make me loose weight! ## Yes, Depression is also a very big reason which affects weight loss and gain. ## What Kevin stated is correct, plus side effects can always vary from person to person, we are all different, so the way any given medication affects any one of us can be different. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Pristiq as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and dry mouth. How are you...

My doctor prescribed me lexapro for crippling depression and anxiety. I have been on it for a few months, and after telling the doctor I felt like I was gaining weight, but that the anxiety was a little better, he took me off the lexapro immediately. I thought this was dangerous, but I am not a doctor. Cut to me not having taken it for going on 3 weeks. My anxiety has increased and among other withdrawal symptoms, I am so tired all the time. I had half a glass of wine this Evenjng to relax, and it almost instantly made me feel nausea and like I was constantly falling. I was sick to my stomach and can't shake this feeling like my entire brain has literally been thrown out of order. And now I can't sleep. Is this normal? How long after stopping should you avoid drinking? Thanks! #...

I'm sorry, but so far, I've not been able to find a listing that matches this description. However, I'll keep looking and post back, when I have information for you. Does anyone else recognize this tablet? ## Sounds like Lexapro ## Thank you, Juke! I was able to confirm that there is a 20mg Escitalopram tablet with just the number 20 on it, however, I don't know if it is scored, or not. This is a generic for Lexapro, which the FDA classifies as an antidepressant that can also help with anxiety. So I have been on Lexapro 10mg for a few years and I didnt feel as if it was helping me at all. Plus I was always tired and gaining weight. My doctor suggested switching to wellbutrin. He told me to take a 150mg wellbutrin and lower my Lexapro dose to 5mg for 2 weeks, then to take 300mg wellbutrin and stop Lexapro. I am almost at the 2 week make and I feel like I have so many side effects and I don't know if it's withdrawal or the new meds, or a combo of both, or maybe I am getting sick? I have headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, lightheaded, out of it, dry mouth, stomach pain, gas, jittery, and heart palpitations at times. I'm afraid to start the 300mg and stop the Lexapro in a few days. Do these sound like symptoms of the withdrawal and starting up those drugs? Its not go...

I cry a lot and I have a lot of issues in my family that cannot be overcome (Health). I need something that makes me not so emotional and DOESNT make me gain weight. I just need something to make me calm down easier. Don't suggest Cymbalta, welbutrin or Lexapro- I've tried all of those and although they worked, Lexapro was the best- I gained too much weight! Thanks! ## Hello, Terryvasil! How are you doing? Have you tried Prozac/Fluoxetine, yet? Hello! I starting taking Cymbalta just yesterday after gaining almost 20kgs on Lexapro (took it for 18 months) I've read mixed reviews on people gaining more weight on it or losing weight. Today so far (its almost 2pm) I have no appetite whatsoever and have only managed to eat one piece of sourdough toast. On lexapro by this time of day I would have already eaten eggs on toast and be onto making pasta for lunch, I was always so hungry! So I feel pretty confident that I will be losing the Lexapro weight while on Cymbalta. Have you lost weight on Cymbalta? I'd be interested to know others experience. ## Hi Luella, While I haven't personally taken Cymbalta, I did come across reviews from other users who have tried it. And I'm actually surprised by the number of people who c...
