Levothyroxine Stopping

I have been taking Levothyroxine .88mg for the past two years. I just left town on a three week vacation and realized I left this prescription at home. Should I be concerned? ## If you suddenly stop taking Levothyroxine, your body can go through withdrawal. "Levothyroxine withdrawal may cause hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid. Hypothyroidism causes weight gain, fatigue, depression and sensitivity to cold because your body does not have enough thyroid hormone so your body processes slow down. Patients with thyroid cancer may suffer acute hypothyroidism because of levothyroxine withdrawal." I had stopped taking the Levothyroxine for four days because I was out of town. On the fourth day I had a severe itching or like a nat biteing me all over my body but no rash. could this have been caused from suddenly stopping the medication? ## Hello, Connie! How are you? Yes, that is possible, other withdrawal effects as listed by the FDA may possibly include dizziness, headache and diarrhea. Why didn't you take a supply with you? You really shouldn't skip days of this medication.

I have hypothyroidism, and I've been on 25 mcg levothyroxine for three months now, and my blood results came back normal during my last doctor's visit. I forgot to ask him, so I thought I'd ask here. Since my thyroid is normal, do I have to continue taking the medication? ## A normal blood test result doesn't necessarily mean that your thyroid has returned to normal and that you are cured, what it can mean is that the medication is working, thus stopping it could start the problems you were being treat for, all over again. Have you consulted your doctor? Normally, if a change in the medication is needed, they would adjust your dosage accordingly.

I had my thyroid and one parathyroid removed in December 2014 due to a multinodular goiter. It was diagnosed by a cardiologist as I had hyperthyroidism with a constant resting heart rate of over 90 bpm, and I have remained on it after surgery, being put on 75mg of levothyroxine. The side effects have been getting so bad that I went off Diltiazem a few days ago, and after the second day, my energy level and overall well-being started to come back. So, I know I need the dosage adjusted downward. However, I can't adjust it until I see the doctor. Is it safe to stop taking Diltiazem abruptly? ## Hello, Kate! How are you? You shouldn't stop such a medication abruptly, as the FDA reports that it may cause a rebound effect, which could include elevated heart rate and blood pressure and...

I stopped taking levothyroxine a few weeks ago and have started having red blood shot eyes that do not respond to eye drops of any kind. Allergy, dry eyes , etc. Can stopping levothyroxine cause red , watery eyes and if I restart taking it will the symptoms of the red eyes disappear? If so, how long will it take? ## Why did you stop taking it? Did your doctor instruct you to stop taking it? Levothyroxine is used to treat thyroid disorders, and if you have an issue with your thyroid that requires the taking of it, you are likely to require it for the rest of your life. Ref: Levothyroxine Information As to the red eyes, there is a chance it's from Thyroid Eye Disease, though it usually also involves ocular swelling, and generally accompanies Graves' Disease. I stopped taking Levothyroxine cold because my script ran out and I had to go to Doctor for a refill and we were leaving on an extended trip. I didn't think it would be any big deal. After about 8-9 weeks my hair began falling out at an alarming rate. I am back on 25 mcg alternating to 50 mcg every other day, after returning home and getting to Dr. She wasn't as concerned with hair loss as she was my suddenly stopping so she spent time cautioning me to not let it happen again. My concerns, how long will it continue to fall out and will it grow back? Also since going back on it I am very nauseous and have a headache, will this discontinue after awhile? I do not recall feeling like this when I initially began taking 2 years ago. ## Hello, Diane! How are you doing? Has there been a...

I was on 100 mg, had to stoptaking due to can afford doctor visit and blood work to get a new script. I have been taking for 5 years, and been off for about 3 weeks, I am very moody, and tried all the time. ## Those can be normal effects of stopping it abruptly. You were taking it to treat a thyroid problem that caused similar symptoms and now, your damaged thyroid is trying to re-regulate itself, without the help of the medication. I went off nuzak but at the same time changed from Eltroxin to Diotroxin. In that change I have been putting on weight and my stomach feeling uncomfortable and bloated constantly. Would it be from the Diotroxin that I'm now on and isn't working for me? Or possibly coming off the Nuzak? I'm thinking about going back to Eltroxin but not sure which could be the cause. ## Such symptoms would most likely be due to starting a new medication, those aren't things that are normally caused by stopping one. Diotroxin contains Levothyroxine and Liothyronine and these types of medications are well known to cause weight gain and GI upsets, such as what you're experiencing. These side effects should start to taper off in about 4 to 6 weeks, as your body adjusts to the medication. A...
