40 Topics FoundI have a horribke skin rash abd i am itching all over from this medixatiob i have only taken 3 i have discontinued the med. The were prescribed for a UTI two days ago. 6/28/16. Should i go to the ER..what will stop the itching..please help! ## Hello, Bertha! How are you? When I had an allergic reaction to this medication, my doctor put me on Benadryl and a steroid skin cream, which requires a prescription. If you're not having trouble breathing, the ER is likely not necessary, but you should consult your regular doctor to see what is appropriate for you to use. As reported by the FDA a skin rash can be a normal side effect of most antibiotics, but when the itching is added, the is likely due to an allergic reaction, so it was smart to stop taking it, because such reactions only tend...

2 REPLIES Filed under SulfamethoxazoleMy mom was diagnosed with a UTI infection. She was just released from the hospital after getting a plural catheter. She has been so weak and tired. Will this medication get rid of a UTI? And will it interfere with her current meds? I want to make sure it's not too strong for her. She is 91 and weighs 117 pounds. ## What medications is she currently taking? I'm sorry, but I can speak to any interference, without knowing more specific details. 1 REPLY Filed under TrimethoprimDrug was prescribed yesterday for a UTI which began yesterdat. Symptoms seemed to be lessening yesterday evening after the 2nd tablet. Time between urinating had stretched to 2 hours. Now, this morning it's back to 15 minute intervals before an overwhelming urge to urinate takes place. (2) Caution against taking with grapefruit juice, but not orange juice. Why? 2 REPLIES Filed under TrimethoprimStarted taking this med yesterday due to possible uti, woke up this morning with watery diarrhea is this normal ## Hi Marianne, From what I've researched, watery diarrhea is listed as a side effect that should be reported to your doctor immediately. I realize today is Christmas and many doctors are on vacation during the holidays, so hopefully your symptoms aren't very severe? However I'd still encourage you to call your doctor anyways, since that's what the drug monograph recommends when it comes to certain symptoms. Antibiotics, such as these, are often prescribed together in the case of severe infections, or if a doctor can't be completely certain what type of bacteria has caused the infection. Learn more Sulfa/Trimeth details here. Learn more Cephalexin details here. These antibiotics may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. However, they should only be taken if they have been prescribed for this by your doctor. 3 REPLIES Filed under SulfamethoxazoleHad 3 UTIs this year. Urologist suggested this med be taken daily for a year. I also have epilepsy and take topomax, dilantin, and climazapan. i think it is a terrible idea. What think you? ## Hello, Stepbystep! How are you? The Sulfamethoxazole in the antibiotic can increase the effect of your Dilantin, which does create a risk of it reaching toxic levels. Why did he pick that antibiotic? It's actually not the one that's usually used for this, the one regularly used for a period of time as a daily UTI preventative is Nitrofurantoin, which isn't listed as having any interactions with your medications. ## I don't know why he chose this rx. I ran this by my neurologist (as I always do), and he wanted me to have lab work done after two weeks and then see him when results ar...

Hallucinations are reportedly a general severe side effect of this antibiotic, as is weakness and fatigue, among a large list of other possible side effects. That said, I do agree with you and strongly recommend looking into other antibiotics for a UTI. Macrobid (nitrofuran...
1 REPLY Filed under BactrimI was just wondering how long this drug has been on the market for UTI"s or if it's fairly new? ## Based on my research, The FDA states that Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim was approved around 1980-1985 from various manufacturers. This antibiotic however, is used for a variety of bacterial infections (not just UTI's), so I'm sure people were using it for all sorts of infections at that time.
