I keep reading that fentanyl is 80% stronger then morphine. However, most people are talking 100 mcg fentanyl patch over 72 hours, so now I wonder what this means? How much morphine totals fentanyl in 3 days? Confusing eh, anybody know?? I am on the 100 mcg patch every 3 days and have 4 mgs hydromorphone every day for back up pain. I don’t like the hydromorphone, I believe it’s making me constipated and I have to take meds for constipation now. I've been on this for over a year. I have stage 4 rectal cancer. I like the fentanyl and it works, but it’s weak when spread out over 3 days. I'm thinking of asking my doctor to let me take one type of opioid instead of two high doses. I’ll leave it up to the doctor but I’ll suggest maybe giving me 75 mcg eve...

My mother has spinal stenosis which cases her great pain. She uses B transpatches 50. which provides no relief. What could be used as an alternative? She is 84. ## I have cervical spinal stenosis. I have used fentanyl patches and lollipops in the past to control my pain. It is very strong but can be given in very small doses and due to her age I doubt a pain specialist would give her any grief over it. Dilaudid also works well for me but I am a poor metaboliser so not many opiatess work for me. You might want to ask about either one of these pain meds. ## Yes, the Fentanyl patches are also what I would suggest asking her doctor about, it is a very strong narcotic, over 80 times stronger than the Morphine, so the patches come in either 0.25mcgs or 0.50mcgs. They are time released and eac...

How are you? Fentanyl is the strongest available, it's over 80 times stronger than Morphine. Your doctor will most likely have you start at the 25mcgs or 50mcgs dosage, since it's so potent to see how it works for you. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mout...

Can I just stop taking fentanyl patch 25? ## No you risk suffering from opiate withdrawal if you have been on the medication for any length of time say for more than a few months. Opiate withdrawal is extremely painful and very unnecessary especially if you have a legitimate prescription for it. ## That is correct, while it may seem small, since the dosage is only 25mcgs, Fentanyl is actually a very potent narcotic. It is actually over 80 times stronger than Morphine. Therefore, if you have been taking it for awhile and want to stop using it, you should seek medical assistance for the best way to taper off, while minimizing the withdrawal and rebound effects. Are there any other questions or comments? ## Of of 25 is minuscule I'm on 150!,... ## Ahhh...ok,here's my situation...I ...

is fentanyl prescription only? ## Hi Willy, To answer your question, yes, Fentanyl patches are available by prescription-only; at least here in the US it is. I'm not aware of other countries laws or regulations regarding this medication. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opiate analgesic similar to but more potent than morphine. It is typically used to treat patients with severe pain, or to manage pain after surgery. It is also sometimes used to treat people with chronic pain who are physically tolerant to opiates. It is a schedule II prescription drug. Learn More: Fentanyl Details I hope this info helps!

for 3 years my dr. was prescribing me three 60mg morphine sulphate er and four 30mg ms ir daily. when it became impossible to get MS in Florida, he switched me to Fentanyl patch 12MCG/HR every 3 days and 7.5mg-200 hydrocordone , 1 every 8 hours. the pain was unbearable and I felt terrible. cold sweats, shakes, could'nt think straight. when I asked him to increase dosage, he increased the patch to 25 MCG, but said there was more MS in the 7.5-200 hydrocodone than the 30mg tabs of ms. do you agree? Also, how does the patch equate to the Three 60MG MS er I was taking daily? Prior to this Dr.,after I moved 200 miles away,, my orthopedic surgeon was prescribing me Oxycontin, or oxycodone. When I called him 3 years ago and told him The new pain management Dr. switched to MS, he said its l...

An expired 5mg Fentanyl patch circa 1999 ... Can this be taken in lieu of Morphine 60mg? Safe? ## No, that patch is very old and likely retains no efficacy. All medications degrade over time and this one is quite old. It would be best to stick with your Morphine, as prescribed. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?

I recently went through bilateral mastectomy due to breast cancer. Chemo & herceptin treatments all done, but because of continual pain I was on percocet for a year, and then switched to 12mcg fentanyl patch, and recently up to a 25mcg patch. I do not want to keep taking these pain meds. So....I stopped cold turkey the patch and I am not able to sleep at night, restless body syndrome, hot & cold spells & extreme anxiety. What can I do to help with these symptoms & how long before it will take me to get through this withdrawal time? Do I need to call my doctor? ## Hello, Linda! How are you doing? if you take a 25 mg Fentanyl Patch and it is not that strong of a prescription for you, can you take additonal painkillers like vicodin as needed? Like taking a few vicodin every few hours during the day while on the patch. ## Please DON'T first stop the Fentanyl It's a nightmare!!!! You are on a path you don't want to travel. Find another way, PLEASE for your own sake!!! ## Fentanyl is 80times stronger than Morphine, therefore, I guarantee it is STRONG for you! Mixing it with other narcotics would be extremely dangerous, it is highly addictive and you run the risk of overdose, with possible fatal consequences. Some of the most common side effects include: nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. You can read more about this medication here: This is one of the MOST PO...

## I HAVE TAKEN FENTANYL TRANS PATCHES FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW, DUE TO ENDOMETRIOSIS. BEWARE WHEN YOU GO INTO HOSPITAL, YOUR BODY COULD BUILD UP A RESISTANCE TO MORPHINE. MINE DID AND ON THREE OCCASIONS. DOCTORS DIDNT LISTEN WHEN I TOLD THEM MORPHINE DIDNT WORK, LEFT IN AGONY ON ALL OCCASIONS. ONE TIME IT WAS FOR MAJOR SURGERY. I FEEL ALL SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS. Fentanyl patches at 1 every 3 days. The morphine was keeping me up at night & did'nt seem to ease the pain.Second day on the patch & it does'nt stop the pain either any suggestions will be truely appreciated..Thanx ## I don't have an exact answer to your question, since everyone responds differently to both of these medications (based on tolerance, etc). However, according to numerous articles, Fentanyl is said to be approximately 100 times more potent than Morphine, with 100 micrograms of Fentanyl approximately equivalent to 10 mg of Morphine in analgesic activity (or in regards to pain relief). I hope this information helps! ## You need to give it a little time. I am on 75 ev...

I am a chronic pain patient and I have slowly got off hydrocodone 10mg-325 acetaminophen and acetaminophen#4 due to stomach issues. I also take other meds cyclobenzaprine diazepam, nortriptyline . I was prescribed the 25mg patch. after reading info with meds it states DO NOT TAKE IF NOT ALREADY USING OPIOID PAIN MED. I am scared to death to try this med. Because I have not used pain meds continually in the last 6 months. Is this safe to start? ## Fentanyl is a very strong opiate narcotic, it is over 80 times stronger than Morphine. I have been on it for about 2 months. I am stopping cold turkey. What is going to happen to me? Fentantnl 25MG patch. ## Hello, Jenn! How are you? Fentanyl is a very potent narcotic, over 80 times stronger than Morphine, so you stopping abruptly will likely cause some severe withdrawal effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, nervousness and insomnia. It would be much safer and easier to do a gradual taper, which may involve other medications. Have you consulted your doctor for assistance? ## Just like most prescription drugs fentanyl is is under the controlled substance act witch means it is addictive, after 2 months of continues use if you quite cold turkey it could force you into withdrawl. If your currently on another prescription pain med that may reduce the withdrawl symptoms ...

I would like to know WHY the FDA has not taken the Fentanyl Patch off the market? This drug is being handed out like candy. Anyone who is not terminal or under Hospice care or in a hospital invironment should not be using this drug. Why would a person be prescribed a medication that is 80 times stronger than morphine for a backache. I do not believe patients know how powerful this medication is. I know because it killed my son. ## Very sorry to hear that you lost your son, from use of this medication. i have half of a 50mg fentanyl patch and im wondering if you can take it? ## It is not safe to do this with any medication, they should only be used in the manner that they are intended to be used. There is a very high risk of overdose, with Fentanyl, because it is over 80 times stronger than Morphine and even the non-gel patches are time released, so abusing it could result in your getting too much, at once. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Is it ok to use Fentanyl (non-gel) patches, even though they're expired? I have taken the gel patches before and it worked better than I hoped, just took a little bit longer to kick in compared to dilaudid. I just used a 25 mcg. sticky non-gel patch, that expired in 2011. Can I expect it to work better soon?
