I have an inflamed prostate that my urologist discovered during my last exam three weeks ago. Prior to that my primary care dr had diagnosed my problems as prostate as well. The cipro he prescribed did nothing and now on septra for four weeks or more. Any comments? Thx ## Hello, Anthony! How are you? Has there been any improvement, yet? The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antibiotic as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. A long course of antibiotics is the most common treatment for this condition, but the only way to see if it works for you is by taking it, as prescribed.

Hi, on Saturday I woke up with a fever of 100.6. I decided to go to minute clinic because my primary doctor was not open on the weekend. The nurse practitioner there checked me and told me I have fever and a very small bladder infection. Because it was small, she sent it out to see if it would grow. She prescribed me ciprofloxacin which really messed up my stomach. So I called and she gave me a new prescription which was sulfamethoxazole which also took a toll on my stomach too so I stopped the medication. I have been off it for a day and I'm still having really watery diarrhea. It does not stop since I've taken the first pill of ciprofloxacin. How long does it take until I get back to normal? I have no fever, and the nurse practitioner called back and said I had no bladder infe...

burnt bottom of feet skin is off, can I take sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim and cipro together. ## Hello, Bob! How are you? Has your doctor prescribed them for you? These are both antibiotics that are used to treat or prevent infection, but it is not appropriate to take them, unless your doctor has instructed you to do so. That said, yes, they are often used together to ensure an infection is fully eradicated. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash, headache and diarrhea. ## Isn’t Ciprofloxacin a dangerous antibiotic?

Which might be a better antibiotic and cause less stress on your liver? ## Hello, Mike! How are you? Generally, Bactrim is the most problematic antibiotic, overall, not just for any possible effect on the liver. It tends to be much more harsh, since it is a sulfa based antibiotic, so it usually causes a lot more side effects and many more allergic reactions than others. It's also very rough on the kidneys and can easily cause dehydration. Thus, if you have a choice, you might want to try Cipro first and save the Bactrim as a last resort, if others don't work. I rarely tell anyone to take it as their first option. Typical side effects to Cipro may include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

Just started on this prescription for a urinary infection after being pulled off of Cipro which gave me headaches and made sleep difficult. Is Sulphamethox similar to Cipro when it comes to avoiding calcium (milk/dairy products) 2 hours before and 6 hours after taking it? I was told that eating or drinking calcium rich foods diminished the effects and needed to know if this applied to Sulphamethox as well. Thanks ## Hello, Kevin! How are you? Since this is a different type of antibiotic, dairy products do not affect its absorption. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

Can I take a 500 mg Cipro tablet after I took my Vitamin D supplement? The antibiotic is for a small boil. ## Dear Deb, Vitamin D is naturally present in our bodies from sunlight. I don't mean for this to come off as sarcastic in any way, but to my understanding Ciprofloxacin does not interfere with what's otherwise naturally occurring in our bodies (with the exception of reducing beneficial gut flora - and that could be replenished with prebiotics/probiotics). However I believe most vitamins and minerals in their raw form should be fine to take alongside it. I am also speaking from personal experience. NOTE: According to a Walgreen's disclaimer, "sulfa antibiotics in particular can reportedly cause photosensitivity", in which case, taking a Vitamin D supplement inst...

I'm currently being treated for prostatitis w/Cipro. Also have chronic epydidymitis. Originally prescribed Bactim, but showed no improvement after 4 days, so was given 60 day course of Cipro. I've researched Cipro on the internet and am now very concerned about being on a fluoroquinolone drug for such a long time. I also suffer a lot from issues related to my gut. Could I expect it to still be effective to stop the Cipro & go back & finish the Bactrim prescription now? I have completed 10 days on the Cipro and have about 6 days of pills left on the Bactrim. Meanwhile, I still have pain & symptoms related to my prostate & testicle. ## The Bactrim is more likely to cause you problems, since it is a sulfa based antibiotic and many people end up being very sensitive ...

I was taking cipro for prostatities and I had a bad reaction now I'm taking apo sulfatrim ds 800 160 mg dosage twice a day . Will this be safer than cipro ## Hello, Fab82! How are you? The only way to know is by actually trying it and seeing how it affects you. It may work better for you than the Cipro did, but you could also suffer some adverse side effects from this one, as well. There's just no way to know ahead of time. Typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. What type of reaction did you have to the Cipro?

I currently have a tooth abcess that my endodontist is trying to treat. The problem he is having is that I am allergic to the antibiotics that are best at treating this. I am allergic to penicillin, erythromycin, cephalosporins. We tried cipro but that did not do much after 2 weeks. Is there another antibiotic I can try? ## Are you able to take the sulfa based ones, such as Bactrim? It can cause some nasty side effects and there is the risk of being allergic for about 3% of people, which is why I don't usually recommend it to anyone, but it may be your best option. One week ago I indicated to my internist, who was completely aware of the prior condition and treatment, that I had a supect growth on my rear. Upon examination he doubted that the infection was a repeat , did not suggest surgery but did prescribe ciprofloxacin 500 mg for a period of 10 days. Does this medication make you light sensative, will I have a higher chance of sunburn while taking this? ## Photosensitivity is common in antibiotic classes like quinolones (Ciprofloxacin), tetracyclines (Doxycycline), and sulfa drugs (Sulfamethoxazole). These drugs you would have to avoid sun exposure. I personally have not read about photosensitivity with Pota-Vi-Kin (Penicillin) use. Most antibiotics have a label on them saying that "this could cause sun sensitivity". I would be on the look out for a label like that for future references; but as far as Penicillin goes, you should be fine. Hope this helps!
