If Xanax and Ativan are both benzodiazapines, why did the Ativan work to relieve anxiety without causing depression but the Xanax didn't? ## It really depends on the person and how your body reacts to it. Just as an example, I'm fine with a low dose .5mg of Ativan, but if I take anything higher it makes me depressed and I feel very groggy for several days afterwards. However, there are other people that use it just fine without any problems. You really just have to figure out what works for you. I've been on 1mg Ativan for at least 15 years that I take at night before bed. I tried to quit a couple of years ago and ended up in the doctors office 2 days later only to learn I can't just stop taking it. I'm just thankful I didn't take 3 a day as prescribed. What is the best way to stop taking this medication? ## Check out the Ashton manual. Unfortunately benzodiazepines surprise patients with how difficult they can be to withdraw and most prescribers don't give informed consent. I have been on benzoate for 15 years and the 3 mg xanax er was working great until the generic was changed on me by the pharmacy. I have been asked to try 1 mg ativan twice daily and my anxiety and panic kicks in that if I say these work and then they don't I won't be able to function. Are these the same and if not how do I get my dr to keep me on the best meds for me and my chemistry. Family member was in ER for alcohol detox and was peaceful and easy going. Member began to have shakes and was given Ativan in an IV. Member became very irritated and aggressive. Member had to be restrained and Ativan was increased. Upon increase, member became violent and had to be restrained by 4 young security guards. I am a hospice nurse and the discussion has come up as to the shelf life of the narcotics that we use such as Ativan,Morphine, Dilaudid. Can someone go immediately from 2mg of Ativan four times a day to Klonopin 3 times a day without horrible withdrawal? ## What is the dosage of Klonopin that has been prescribed? I have been taking one of each in order to take the edge off the anti depressant (Aspen Escitalopram.), is that too much? ## I really cannot say, you didn't say how high of a dosage you were taking of anything. Have these all been prescribed by your doctor? Do you have any other medical conditions and is this all the medications you are taking? I do want to warn you that these are BOTH Benzodiazepines, so they should not both be used at the same time. Can you post back with more information?

My doctor just retired. I saw my new "nurse practioner" tonight. I was getting refills on my prescriptions and she looked at my ativan and said no this isn't happening. She said ativan doesn't work and she will not be prescribing it for me after the next bottle. I have been on ativan for 12 years. It completely controls my anxiety. What do I do? Can she do this? ## Unfortunately, she can do it. It's extremely unethical though. She should, at least, provide you with an extensive titration/taper plan. I would try to find another doctor. One that will continue to provide you with lorazepam or slowly taper you off. Benzo withdrawal can be protracted and last indefinitely if not done properly. ok--I really want some documentation regarding these deaths caused by the use of Suboxone and benzodiazepenes ie; Ativan, Klonopin, etc., concurrently. I want to know because I have been taking Suboxone with Librium for months, and now am taking Suboxone with Klonopin. I only take 2mg of Suboxone, mind you the high end 'range' is 32mg a day! I am taking suboxone 8.2 three times a day and my doctor told me this was the maximum dosage, however i am still struggling with terrible anxiety.
