(Hypo = low; natraemia = sodium in blood) Sodium is the dominant extracellular cation and cannot freely cross the cell membrane. Its homeostasis is vital to the normal physiologic function of cells. Normal serum sodium levels are between 135 and 145 mEq/L. Hyponatremia is defined as a serum level of less than 135 mEq/L and is con...

Hi, My name is Derek. In the summer of 2014 I had a grand mall, 2 1/2 min long and almost bit 2 big chunks out of my toung. Not fun coming too and you're totally out and surrounded by a group of dudes you've never seen before. I was 50 and the hos stay of 3 days was chalked up too alcohol withdrawal. Funny thing is my sodium was low but that was ignored, these seizures have continued and it's now June of 2017. Approx. 9 911 calls and ambulance rides wit about 5 weeks combined in various hospitals no one in Casper Wy. Has been able to tell me what is going on. I still struggle with my sodium level. A few weeks back I totally quit the seizure medication I was being treated with. I haven't had any other seizures since. It's July now. A neurologist said I have a low tole...
1 REPLY Filed under HyponatremiaI have a history of low grade chronic depression since my teen years. I am now 58. In 2001, I was prescribed Effexor xr. It has worked great!!! In 2011, my sodium levels started falling and have reached serious levels now. My question is, after all these years, could Effexor be the problem, even though the first 10 years I was on it I never had problems with sodium??? ## Yes, it is possible, because our bodies do change with time, so the way we react to medications may also change and the FDA does list hyponatremia as being a possible side effect of this medication. However, there are also other issues that could cause it, as well, such as dehydration, extreme dieting, and other medications. Do you take anything else? Does your doctor think it is due to this medication? What dosage are ...

I had been taking telma-h for a few years until 2008. i underwent brain surgery for hemorrhage due to a fall in 2008. i was tested to be hyponatremic (sodium consistently below 128). my medication was changed to telma plus amlodipine, nebistar. but sodium never rose beyond 130. recently i got tested for electrolyte. potassium continues to be normal like before, but sodium is 122; calcium and chloride are also below normal. for diabetes i take glycephase and glynase (now stopped by the physician) plus mixtard/novomix insulin. my energy level has been going down although i am still active intellectually (reading, writing, lecturing). right since my childhood days, i have a strong craving for salty and sour food. what can be the reason f...

I am taking Divalprox 250mg tablets in 750mg doses. I also take Seroques 50mg and Zoloft 150mg. I have been having pain in my knees when I walk from a sitting position and. I have severe pain and numbness in my little finger and the two next to it at the knuckle to the point where it feels tight and hurts to make a fist. Could this be a side effect of my medication? ## Have you consulted your doctor? This medication combination can increase the risk of some problems, such as hyponatremia, or neuroleptic malignant syndrome, so you should consult your doctor to get to the root of the problem. ## This was very helpful. I will make sure to request a blood test to measure the level of sodium in my blood as well as to question the combination of medications I am on. Thank you.

2 REPLIES Filed under FurosemideI would like to know my daughter as been using Lexamil for 3 years. The doctor subscriped Cymgen to be taken in the evening. She is still using Lexamil in the morning. Is this adviseable. She is only 17 years old. Thanks ## Have you spoken to her doctor about your concerns? There can be some risks associated with taking the Escitalopram in the Lexamil with the Duloxetine in the Cymgen, such as hyponatremia and serotonin syndrome. This doesn't mean they can't both be used, but her doctor should carefully take the dosages under consideration and should be monitoring her on a regular basis. ## From what I could gather, these two drugs should not be taken together, as there is an interaction between the active ingredients "escitalopram" and "duloxetine" in each drug....
3 REPLIES Filed under EscitalopramI'm trying to find out the cost of one pill of samsca (tolvatan). My family member is on it for hyponaturemia & has cancer as well. I'm not happy with the rehab this person is in as a result of the cost of this med. ## cost is $300 per day-- this is usual with all new drugs -- price declines as it is produced ## The price, of course, can vary depending on where the medication is obtained, it will not always be exactly the same at all pharmacies or care facilities, however most drugs are quite expensive. The main use of this drug is to treat, as you said, those low blood sodium levels. You may wish to ask if there are any alternative treatment options available. There isn't a lot of information available on this medication, but you can read the little there is here: I wis...

2 REPLIES Filed under Metoprololhello, I am on dextroamphetimine 40 mg a day for ADD symptoms, Tramadol PRN for back pain, Armour Thyroid 150 mcg for hypothyroidism,Cymbalta 120 mg for depression and 10 mg of Abilify both taken at bedtime Advair 100, and albuteral PRN for asthma. I experienced my first cluster headache a month ago. I saw a neurosurgeon and he put me on Divalproex sod dr 250 mg to start twice a day. Will this med interfere with anything I am currently taking? ## Do you have a main doctor that is aware of everything you are taking and is your pharmacy aware of all of them, to check for interactions? There are some possible problems. Mixing the Divalproex with the Cymbalta creates the risk of conditions such as Hyponatremia, which is low blood sodium. I have been on cymbalta 60 mg for several years, recently my doctor prescribed 10mg of doxepin for sleep. I have taken the doxepin before bed and the cymbalta in the morning for 2 days. It didn't help me sleep but I felt dozy and like I don't care both days, like I'm in a capsule by myself. I used the interaction checker and it said that these 2 meds had a high interaction. I've decided not to take a doxepin tonight. I'm interested in some opinions. Thanks ## Yes, there can be risks associated with taking them both, such as developing serotonin syndrome and hyponatremia.
