I found Hydrocodone 7.5 mg and it's from 1997 is it dangerous to take because of the Tylonel or Ibuprofen in it?? ## Hi Jb, While there may be a lot of conflicting information around the topic of expired medication, a Harvard Medical School family health article states that, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. This conclusion was based upon a study conducted at the request of the US military due to stockpiles of expensive drugs they could otherwise need to replace every few years. The conclusion was that 90% of those drugs remained effective 10 - 15 years after the expiration date. I don't know whether or not the drug you have happens to be one of these drugs from t...

Does liquid hydrocodone/apap lose its yellow color after two weeks ## Hi Jenni, Based on my research, U.S. prescription medications are required to have a mandatory expiration date of 1 year from the date the prescription is filled. After a year is up, the medication should still be safe but it will start to lose its potency and can no longer be as effective. However, there are some medications that can become dangerous after they expire. That being said, it's best to not take any medication after its expiration date. I haven't heard of this happening, but I'm sure it has to someone besides yourself. Maybe there is a problem with your specific prescription. Have you spoken with your pharmacy about it? I hope you get it figured out! Has this happened to anyone else? ## I woul...

Would this be ok to take? 1 year later would be 2/14 ## Hi Debbie, There's actually an article in the LA Times Newspaper (which you can also find online) stating that researchers from the California Poison Control System, UC San Francisco and UC Irvine did a study investigating a variety of old drugs (Hydrocodone being one of them); and concluded that many of them are still ok to take even up to 28-40 years after the listed expiration date! That said, I don't think you have anything to worry about with your medication only being 1 year past the expiration. As long as it was stored properly and not left out in high temperatures, most of the potency should still be intact. I hope this helps!

i found some hydrocodone in my drawer, they were kept in a dry dark place in the original container, they were prescribed in 2007 but expired in 2010 and now its about 7 years past the due date. are they still safe to take? ## Hello, Lexi! How are you? They do not become dangerous, once expired, but they do begin to lose efficacy, being that old, they will most likely not work well, anymore. Thus, it would be best to dispose of them and see your doctor for a new prescription. The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have 150 ML of Hydrocodone/APAP ELX that expired in 12/06. It has not been opened since then and has been kept at a constant room temp. Is it still safe to use for my bursitis and other muscle pains....??? ## Hello, Dlanor! How are you? No, it is long expired after that many years. Liquids degrade faster than other forms of medications and slowly lost potency. Not only will it no longer be very effective, but there's also a chance that it has turned and could make you very ill, if you take it. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. If you need pain relief, it would be best to see your doctor for a new prescription. Is there anything else I can help with...

I have some Hydrocodone 5mg/500mg they expired 2009 would they still be ok to take? ## This medication which is a generic for Vicodin doesn't get dangerous once it's past the expiration date, but it does lose effectiveness, so after 3 years, they aren't likely to do much in the way of pain relief. Learn more Vicodin details here. The best thing to do would be to dispose of them and see your doctor for a new prescription. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I used hydrocodone liquid form from 2009. How long is the expiration for that. Can't find the bottle now. ## Not true. The Military just did tests on the efficacy of drug like this, and they all lasted about 80 YEARS. No kidding. Look that up. If stored properly, the efficacy should be the exact same even after ...

I need to know if hydrocodone ibuprofen expires? the prescription was filled 10/11/2010..will it be safe or effective? ## To answer your question, yes these medications do have an expiration date, but it may be a lot farther away than you might expect. According to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. Source: health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update1103a.shtml I wouldn't be surprised if it lost some of its potency by now, but based on what I've read I think it would be perfectly fine to still use it as needed. I hope this helps! ## Thank you! I did take it and it did its job thankfully and didnt kill me so i guess i am goo...

I found these pills from 2000...are they safe to take? ## Hydrocodone does not get dangerous, after the expiration, but it does slowly lose effectiveness and after all these years, the chance of them actually doing anything is very low. In addition, if they contain Acetaminophen, that will also lose effectiveness and doubling up on them isn't a good idea, because taking too much of it, in a day, can be toxic. Are there any other questions?

I would like to know if Hydroco/apap 10-500mg tablets are still good after a year and for how long they are good. ## Medications have an expiration (usually of 1 year) because by law it must have one. If you had these hydrocodone/apap pills in a dark, cool place such as a kitchen cabinet, bedroom drawer, etc. chances are still fine. Most pills are actually good for two years from the fill date as long as they are cared for properly. If you had them in the medicine chest in the bathroom, (a bad place for medication) then they may have lost some or all of their potency. When a medication like this one becomes older, it is not really dangerous to take it, rather it might have lost some of it narcotic and/or acetaminophen properties. DO NOT USE THIS RULE FOR EVERY MEDICATION ESPECIALLY FOR ...

There is no expiration date on this cough medicine. It is hydrocodone-chlorpheniram that was filled on 9/2/14. Is this still safe to take? ## Hi Jackie, According to studies represented by Harvard University and the LA Times Newspaper, hydrocodone can reportedly last anywhere from 10-40 years past the expiration date, depending on the conditions in which it is stored. Chlorpheniramine on the other hand is something I'm not so sure of (when it comes to long term studies); however, GlaxoSmithKline a UK-based drug manufacturer denotes a shelf life of 3 years for their Chlorpheniramine tablets. I understand that your product is liquid rather than a tablet, but if it were me in this position I'd probably feel some sense of security if it were stored in a cool, dry and dark environmen...

I have a prescription for HYDROCODONE APAP 5-500 TABLMCK that has a discard date of 2010. Are these still safe to use? If not, what is recommended method of disposal? ## They don't get dangerous past the expiration date, but they do lose effectiveness, so they are most likely worthless by now. The recommended FDA method of disposal is to mix them with some undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds, or used kitty litter and then to place that in a sealed container in the garbage. Learn more Vicodin details here. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thanks for the info. I will use your suggestion as to disposal.

I have liquid vicodin that expired 5 months ago. Will it be ok for me to still take it? It's 7.5mg per 15 ml. ## It would be best not to do so, liquid medications can actually 'go sour', so to speak, once expired and it could make you sick, if you take. If you still need such a medication, it would be best to see your doctor for a new supply. The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth. I have received these pills on 11/5/2014, and was wondering if the remaining pills are safe to take? ## Hello, BigAl! How are you? If they're in a pharmacy bottle, then the expiration date would be one year from when they were dispensed to you. So, if you received them from your pharmacy on 11/05/2014 then they are good until 11/04/2015. However, only your doctor can say if they are safe for you to take. My bottle dates back two years old. Is it still OK to take? Wonder if it will harm me at this age? I'm sick with a cough and can't get out. ## I’m waiting to know what the difference in strength is between a hydrocodone-homatropine 5-1.5mg pill and a 10/325mg hydrocodone-acetaminophen pill, and how many of the hydrocodone-homatropine 5-1.5mg pills would I need to take to equal one of my 10/325 hydrocodone-acetaminophen pills? Can I also take my tramadol 50mg pills with the hydrocodone-homatropine 5-1.5mg pills? ## Mike, medications tend to lose efficacy once past their expiration date, so they may not work as well as they did, when they were new. What is the shelf life of these pills? 12, 18, 24 Months? If they are still in the original factory sealed bottle, then the expiration date is 3 years from the date of manufacture. Are there any other questions? ## Thank you, I'll be throwing these pills out ## I believe they say you can keep them for 3 years, that is if they are sealed from the manufacturer.
