My doc after looking at my MRI for my back, me having no insurance, sent me to a specialist that i can't afford. He stopped all pain pills and put me off to someone I can't pay to see. So after having pain problems since march of 2013 and being prescribed pain meds, it suddenly stops and he won't refill them. I found some vicodin 5-500 (hydrocodone-Acetaminophen ) from 2011 and wondered if I can still use them for my back pain. ## You could try, they probably won't be as strong. Just try 1at a time though, at 1st ## @sweeper2, This may come as a surprise, but according a study from Harvard Medical School, many medications can remain effective for even up to 15 years beyond their listed expiration date. I have not seen the actual list of drugs used in this study, but I...

I found these pills from 2000...are they safe to take? ## Hydrocodone does not get dangerous, after the expiration, but it does slowly lose effectiveness and after all these years, the chance of them actually doing anything is very low. In addition, if they contain Acetaminophen, that will also lose effectiveness and doubling up on them isn't a good idea, because taking too much of it, in a day, can be toxic. Are there any other questions?

I would like to know if Hydroco/apap 10-500mg tablets are still good after a year and for how long they are good. ## Medications have an expiration (usually of 1 year) because by law it must have one. If you had these hydrocodone/apap pills in a dark, cool place such as a kitchen cabinet, bedroom drawer, etc. chances are still fine. Most pills are actually good for two years from the fill date as long as they are cared for properly. If you had them in the medicine chest in the bathroom, (a bad place for medication) then they may have lost some or all of their potency. When a medication like this one becomes older, it is not really dangerous to take it, rather it might have lost some of it narcotic and/or acetaminophen properties. DO NOT USE THIS RULE FOR EVERY MEDICATION ESPECIALLY FOR ...

My bottle dates back two years old. Is it still OK to take? Wonder if it will harm me at this age? I'm sick with a cough and can't get out. ## I’m waiting to know what the difference in strength is between a hydrocodone-homatropine 5-1.5mg pill and a 10/325mg hydrocodone-acetaminophen pill, and how many of the hydrocodone-homatropine 5-1.5mg pills would I need to take to equal one of my 10/325 hydrocodone-acetaminophen pills? Can I also take my tramadol 50mg pills with the hydrocodone-homatropine 5-1.5mg pills? ## Mike, medications tend to lose efficacy once past their expiration date, so they may not work as well as they did, when they were new. Additionally, liquid medications can turn rancid, so they could actually make you ill. Thus, it would be best not to take it, bu...

I have Hydrocodone + Acetaminophen 10/325 that was prescribed for my back pain which expired a year ago. Is it still effective and how long does it keep its potency? ## Hello, Mary! How are you? Medications do lose effectiveness over time, that's why they carry an expiration date, that's the longest the manufacturer can be sure it will maintain maximum efficacy under normal storage conditions. There's no definitive information that I can give you on how long it retains its full potency, once expired, because that depends on many factors, such as the storage conditions. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. If you...

How long is this medication good after their expiration date. I don't take often so I have some over a year old. ## Hello, Based on my research, U.S. prescription medications are required to have a mandatory expiration date of 1 year from the date the prescription is filled. After a year is up, the medication should still be safe but it will start to lose its potency and can no longer be as effective. However, there are some medications that can become dangerous after they expire. acetaminophen / hydrocodone 500 mg / 5 mg, watson 349 shelf life? ## If they are still in the original factory sealed container, these tablets have a 3 year shelf life. However, once the seal on that container has been broken, the shelf life drops to one year, since they are then exposed to the elements that can cause degradation. This expiration date would include your receiving them in a bottle dispensed from your pharmacy. This is a generic for Vicodin, which is a narcotic pain reliever, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, constipation, dry mouth and drowsiness. Another note that needs to be added here is that as of 2013, the FDA has made a request that all manufacturers lower the amount of Acetaminophen in these combinat...

I found a prescription of hydrocodone from 2000 and my mother was wondering if you could still take them? I dont know if they are toxic or not so i am trying to find out before she takes them. ## Neither the Hydrocodone, nor Acetaminophen become toxic, after the expiration, but they do lose effectiveness. After 10 years, the chance of them actually having any beneficial effect isn't very high. You would be better served to just properly dispose of them. Are there any other questions?
