My dog weights 10 lbs. - 1/4 of a tablet 2x daily. Is this too much of a dose for her size? ## Hello, Marilyn! How are you? I'm sorry, but I am not very familiar with the use of most medications in animals, I've not done much studying of veterinary medicine. Is that the dose your vet told you to give her?

My 9lb dog is on this med for chronic cough. She has been having very soft stools that has a very strong odor. Is this common? Also is there anything to add to food that will take care of this problem? Thank you. ## Hello, Claudette! How are you? The site effects in dogs will usually be very similar to those in humans, so yes, that is a possible side effect. Virtually any medication can affect stool odor and consistency. As listed by the FDA, other side effects may include nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Have you consulted your vet? They would be the best person to advise you on whether or not there's anything that may help.

My 13 year old yorkie mix has had a collapsing trachea since I adopted her 12 years ago. She has always been on Tussigon Bitartrate 5 mg (1/4 tablet-4x daily). The vet no longer carries Tussigon so he wrote us an Rx for the pharmacy. They gave us Hydrocodone/Homatropine 5/1.5 mg. We are to give 1/4 tablet 4x daily. I'm concerned that these may not be the same Tussigon she has been on for 12 years. We have been slowly switching her over as we have some Tussigon left. Her tracheal collapse is very bad and I'm afraid to go full Hydrocodone/Homatropine. If her trachea collapses, the closest ER vet is over an hour away. I need to know if these are the same medications? Has anyone switched from long term use of Tussigon Bitartrate to Hydrocodone/Homotropine? Any problems? Different si...

For those owners in the unenviable position of needing Tussigon for their pets chronic cough: as a veterinary specialist in canine and feline practice, let me say we vets would LOVE to be able to dispense this med to your pets since it is highly effective BUT 1) the drug is essentially now unavailable even to pharmacies at the veterinary teaching hospitals; and 2) the DEA in its "wisdom" has decided to make this drug a Schedule II drug (eg. morphine) because of perceived increase in human abuse. ## @FrustratedCareGiver, Thank you for the heads up on Tussigon's availability. It looks like those pet owners will have to resort to other forms of treatment for their pet's chronic coughing. I wonder though, what would be the next best alternative that patients will have access...

I've been buying tussigon from costco. ## Tussigon contains hydrocodone (dihydrocodeinone) bitartrate, a semi-synthetic centrally-acting narcotic antitussive. Homatropine methylbromide is included in a sub-therapeutic amount to discourage deliberate overdosage. All of the big chain pharmacies should have access to this medication (on location or through mail order) if you present them with a valid script. Are you having any success or difficulties getting it filled through Costco?

What are the side effects of this drugs in dogs? Is lose of appetite one of them? ## Hello, Based on my research, the Tussigon (Hydrocodone bitartrate + homatropine methylbromide) could possibly cause a dog to lose his/her appetite due to the fact that one of the common side effects is nausea/upset stomach. It is not uncommon for medications to cause these kinds of issues in humans and animals. If you have a dog that is experiencing a loss of appetite, I would contact a veterinarian as soon as possible. I hope this helps! ## My dog lost her appetite when taking Tussigon. She also had problems with her bowel movements which I attributed to her eating so infrequently. ## Unfortunately my little Angel died on February 7th. She would have been 15 on July 1st. I wish everyone success with th...
