Is this a water pill or a high blood pressure pill? ## It actually lowers blood pressure by expelling water from the body " Hydrochlorothiazide, sometimes abbreviated HCT, HCTZ, or HZT is a popular diuretic drug of the thiazide class that acts by inhibiting the kidneys' ability to retain water. This reduces the volume of the blood, decreasing blood return to the heart and thus cardiac output and, by other mechanisms, is believed to lower peripheral vascular resistance. What is the half-life of 12.5 mg HCTC (Hydrochlorothiazide)? How long can it be kept for? ## Hello, Buddy! How are you? The half-life is not related to how long a medication can be stored, that refers to how long it takes for it to reach 50% of its maximum level in your body, which allows you to determine when it will be fully eliminated. For example, it takes 5 to 6 times the normal half-life, for a medication to be expelled. Thus one that has a half-life of 5 hours, would be fully expelled anywhere between 25 to 30 hours, give or a take a slight variation from person to person, as defined by the FDA, since we are all different. Shelf life, however, is the maximum time that the manufacturer can guarantee that it will retain its full level of efficacy under average home storage conditio...

I have been on this med for BP for over a year and I am experiencing a slow but steady increase of leg pain in my right thigh. It started out as a sort of weakness and now has changed to pain, mostly in the night while trying to sleep. It wakes me with a lot of pain, and at these times, I will call the pain intense. I spoke with my doctor, and they think I have some kind of tendonitis, but I'm not sure I agree. Why wouldn't it be in both thighs? ## Hello, Karen! How are you feeling? I'm sorry about the leg pain. Is it safe for me to take bactrim and hydrochlorothiazide hours apart? They were both prescribed to me and I am nervous about how to take them... Both the doctor and the pharmacists said it was ok to take them together, but I'm not so sure if that's the case as I read that you aren't supposed to take these pills together. I have a bad uti. ## Where did you read that? From my research, I did not find any problems or interactions, according to FDA warnings. The typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash. Sometimes, we overthink and over research things. It is always best to listen to our doctors and pharmacists. Are you on any other medications?

I stopped taking it because I could not get to the pharmacy. I gained 5 pounds in one day!! ## Hello, Abernathy! How are you? Yes, that can happen, if you stop taking it suddenly, due to rebound fluid retention, as reported by the FDA. You may also experience edema, elevated blood pressure and elevated heart rate. In the future, it would be best to pick up your refill early, to avoid running out. Have you had this checked out by your doctor? Fluid retention can lead to congestive heart failure, which is a very dangerous condition.

My AC1 level went from 5.8 to 6.0 to 6.4 every six months and my Doctor stated i was pre diabetic. I researched my medication and found that HCTZ causes AC! levels to rise. I told my doctor and she disagreed. I asked that I be taken off HCTZ for 3 months and see what my AC1 level was. She agreed and yesterday my test results was ONE full point lower 5.4 versus 6.4. I am awaitng a response from my Doctor. Not everyone is the same but if you are on HCTZ and your AC1 level begins to increase I suggest to stop it for 3 months and see if your results are the same. ## Hello, Jim! How are you?
