Is this a water pill or a high blood pressure pill? ## It actually lowers blood pressure by expelling water from the body " Hydrochlorothiazide, sometimes abbreviated HCT, HCTZ, or HZT is a popular diuretic drug of the thiazide class that acts by inhibiting the kidneys' ability to retain water. This reduces the volume of the blood, decreasing blood return to the heart and thus cardiac output and, by other mechanisms, is believed to lower peripheral vascular resistance. My bottle says Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg and Mfg: West Ward, but the pills are peach color with 4 0 on one side and 1011 on the other side. Is this a correct fill? ## NO! You should return to the pharmacy and report this immediately. The tablet marked 1011 40 contains 40mgs of Citalopram, which is an antidepressant. You can learn more about it here: It is not even related to Hydrochlorothiazide, which I assume you are taking for either high blood pressure or some type of edema. What is the half-life of 12.5 mg HCTC (Hydrochlorothiazide)? How long can it be kept for? ## Hello, Buddy! How are you? The half-life is not related to how long a medication can be stored, that refers to how long it takes for it to reach 50% of its maximum level in your body, which allows you to determine when it will be fully eliminated. For example, it takes 5 to 6 times the normal half-life, for a medication to be expelled. Thus one that has a half-life of 5 hours, would be fully expelled anywhere between 25 to 30 hours, give or a take a slight variation from person to person, as defined by the FDA, since we are all different. Shelf life, however, is the maximum time that the manufacturer can guarantee that it will retain its full level of efficacy under average home storage conditio...

I'm taking Hydrochlorothiazide for water retention due to a side effect from high estrogen levels in my birth control. I take 25 mg every morning, and haven't been able to sleep at all in the past three nights. I've looked it up online and haven't found anywhere saying that it causes loss of sleep. Is that a side effect of hydrochlorothiazide or is there just something else wrong with me? Because I haven't changed any other medications, or habits since then. It's the only thing I can think of that's causing this. ## Hi Hannah, There are actually quite a few side effects listed that, in my opinion, could indirectly result in loss of sleep/insomnia-related symptoms. Posted below is a list of side effects for you to check out: Hypokalemia, an occasional side eff...

If I'm prescribed both pills, do I have to take them together? What if I only take the Losartan without the Hydrochlorothiazide? ## You should take them both, as prescribed. They are often used together to help lower high blood pressure and to treat some cardiac conditions. Taking just the Losartan may lower it some, but not as much as taking both. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Did your doctor instruct you to take both? ## Someone has asked this, but I didn't see a specific response to it - Should losartan and hydrochlorothiazide be taken at the same time or different times of day for BP control?

Am allergic to Blue #2 which is found in Mylan's Triamterene HCTZ. How do I find a pharmacy that sells Actavis' (formerly Watson Pharma) version of this medication which does not contain Blue#2? ## Hello, Tom! How are you? If you inform your pharmacy of the issue, they should be able to order the other one in for you. Side effects to this medication may include nausea, dizziness, dehydration and hypotension. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thanks so much. That's exactly what I'll do. Tried already at my pharmacy(cvs) and they would not order anything other than Mylan. Same story at Publix. I'll find someone this week I'm sure. Thanks again.

A pharmacy error caused me to miss 21 doses of hydrochlorothiazide (25 mg once daily). Can I expect side effects now that I have started taking it again? ## Yes, it is possible that you might. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. With that bad of an error, I must ask if you've considered switching to a different pharmacy? That is just horrible. Are you on any other medications?

I am taking hydrochlorothiazide 25mg once a day along with Losartan, also 25 mg. Should I take these together at the same time or should I take them at different times of the day for the best effect? I currently take one of a morning and the other at night. ## You can take them as it is convenient for you, unless your doctor has instructed otherwise, just make sure you are consistent and don't miss doses. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have been taking hydrochlorothiazide for 2 weeks now, and this past week my kidneys have hurt badly and it hurts in my kidneys when I urinate. Is this typical of this med? Im taking it for high BP, also it makes me very sleepy if I take my whole 25 mg pill at once, I have had to go to a half dose to not be so tired. Anyone else have this experience? Should I call my doc? ## This medication is use to remove excess fluid from the body, to help treat high blood pressure, edema, and congestive heart failure. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. I accidentally took 2 doses of my blood pressure medication (Triamterene-Hydrochlorothiazide 37.5 - 25 mg). What should I do or what could happen? ## Hi Marquetta, Sorry to hear about your situation. How are you feeling since taking that extra dose? My personal opinion is that it may be best to contact your doctor, local pharmacist and/or poison control just to be on the safe side. However, if this medicine is lowering your blood pressure, perhaps engaging in some sort of physical activity that gets your heart rate up could help counteract the possibility of severe hypotension. Please note that this is not medical advice, but just my own theory, since that's what these medications are indicated for... As far as what could potentially happen outside of low blood pressure, there may b...

What dosage are you taking? The FDA lists the highest dangers of taking a double dose as possibly including dehydration, and hypotension. Are you on any other medications? Drug interaction Want to no if I can take these 4 potassium pills for 2 days with my other daily medications ## Hello, Mare! How are you? As long as your doctor has approved it, then yes, they can be taken together. The FDA classifies potassium as a supplement and it can cause stomach pain and nausea, so it should be taken with food. The more pressing question, I think, is if your potassium is low, why do they still have you on the Hydrochlorothiazide? It is a diuretic and well known to cause potassium loss. Stopping it and switching to a different one might easily solve the problem. You may want to ask your doctor about it. Typical side effects to it may also possibly include nausea, headache, dehydration and increased urination. ## in the morning I take Glimepiride 2 mg, Amlodipine-be...
