Been using bactrim for several days, abscess seems to remain the same. Could I be anti resistant to antibiotics? ## Hello, Crowe! How are you? How many days have you been taking it? The general rule for antibiotics, according to the NIH, is that if they are working, you shouldn't see any worsening after being on them for a full 24 hours and you should start to see improvement, after taking them for a full 72 hours. If it's been longer than that, with no change, you may need to try a different antibiotic. The U.S. FDA lists the typical antibiotic side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. ## I just started taking the BactrimDs 800-160 for an ingestion under my eye how quick will this take I have swelling under my eye

Which might be a better antibiotic and cause less stress on your liver? ## Hello, Mike! How are you? Generally, Bactrim is the most problematic antibiotic, overall, not just for any possible effect on the liver. It tends to be much more harsh, since it is a sulfa based antibiotic, so it usually causes a lot more side effects and many more allergic reactions than others. It's also very rough on the kidneys and can easily cause dehydration. Thus, if you have a choice, you might want to try Cipro first and save the Bactrim as a last resort, if others don't work. I rarely tell anyone to take it as their first option. Typical side effects to Cipro may include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I was prescribed bactrim or moderate acne and have been on the generic form sulfameth/trimethoprim 800/160 once daily for 5-6 weeks and have seen little to no results. Anyone know time line for this stuff to start working? I've been on keflax, ampicillin with success but I recall those working faster. No side effects but no success either, any advice?? ## From what I've found when researching this, results should start to be seen at about 6 weeks of use. If you haven't seen any results yet, then it just may not be the right antibiotic to help you. Have you ever tried Doxycycline? You can learn more Doxycycline details here. I'd suggest asking your doctor about it, if you haven't. Many people use it very successfully for acne. ## Well my 15yr old daugher got prescribe...

Recently, I suffered a severe allergic reaction to Bactrim DS, with itchy hives and welts all over my entire body not to mention I have bone cancer. I'm trying to find out what Bactrim is made from to protect myself from possible allergic reactions to any certain plant?tree?etc...what is Bactrim derived from? Mold?Grass? Or????? Thanks~ ## Hello, TRay! How are you? I understand your concern, but a medication is a fully refined form of whatever natural substance it is composed of, so you can't match the allergies that way. For example, I am highly allergic to mold, but I can take most antibiotics without a problem, though many are derived from molds. You are most likely just allergic to the Sulfamethoxazole in it, I experienced a similar problem several years ago, when I took. Ab...

How many days of Bactrim use does it take to cure strep throat? ## Did your doctor prescribe it for treating strep? The reason I'm asking is because there are certain types of strep that it shouldn't be used to treat, so you shouldn't take it for strep, unless your doctor has specifically instructed you to do so. Learn more Bactrim details here. As to the dosing, it's usually taken twice a day for 10 days to treat most infections, but that can also vary depending on the type of infection being treated and the severity. ## Tengo gramos en la piel con nucleo de color verde porulento me mandaron el bactrim y tengo una mano inflamada, enrojecimiento y dolor, estoy tomando el medicamento correcto? ## What can a person use for the mouth sores and cracked lips from reaction of th...

My beagle keeps a yeast infection in his ears all the time. No matter how many times I take him to the vet, it goes away for a week or two and it's back again. He has seizures and also he weighs 60 pounds, now I know he's overweight but I need to know how much bactrim I can give him to clear up his ear infection. I cannot take him to the vet right now I just don't have the cash for that. So any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated. ## Bactrim is an antibiotic, it can only treat bacterial infections, it will not treat yeast infections. It can be used in dogs, according to NIH reports, and is safe for them, but it should not be given, without a veterinarians approval. It can also cause side effects in dogs, such as nausea, dizziness, skin rash, and diarrh...

My wife was diagnosed with uri due to sinusitis. Why use such a heavy duty antibiotic? So many side effects. It's used on HIV patients and to treat certain STI's. I'm assuming she has neither. Seems I'm missing something. Why not use a safer drug? ## Hello, David! How are you? It is just an antibiotic that is used to treat various types of bacterial infections, it is no more or less safe than any other, unless someone is allergic to it. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. The antibiotic that a doctor chooses to prescribe depends on the severity of the infection; the specific bacteria, if it was cultured and other factors. Has she started taking it?

can I give my dog Bactrim for what looks like an abscess on her front baby teeth/tooth she is about one and half yrs old and constantly chewing on her ball and other toys. would his be caused by her chewing. just looks like two little bumps on the back of her front baby teeth ## Hi Connie, If you haven't done so already, I would definitely encourage you to get in touch with a veterinarian when it comes to powerful antibiotics of the likes of Bactrim. Hopefully you can take your dog to go see one in person to determine if it is in fact an abscess or not. I've just seen so many negative reports here pertaining to side effects associated with Bactrim in particular that I'm very partial to the idea of it being given to an animal. This isn't to suggest that it's not a via...

My glands are swollen can bactrim DS 800 160 Tab help me till I have time to go see the doctor. ## Bactrim is an antibiotic that can help treat many types of infections, so if the swollen glands are due to an infection, it may help, but you could also run into the issue of not having enough to fully eradicate the infection, if these are left overs from some other infection. Learn more Bactrim details here. Additionally, swollen glands can also be caused by some viruses and, if that's what has caused them to be swollen, then an antibiotic will not be effective. Both scenarios create the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Having taken Bactrim for about 3 weeks for a prostate infection, it now seems that the first urination after taking the pill exaggerates or possibly causes an extra burning sensation. Is this ever reported as a side effect ## Bactrim contains Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim and being that it's a sulfa drug, it's well known to cause odd side effects and weight reactions in many people that take it. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, unless it's their only option for treating their infection. Learn more Bactrim details here. That said, yes there's a chance that the medication could be causing the problem, though there is also still a chance that it is unrelated. I have been on Azulfine for many years. Very low dose right now. I have an infection from surgery and my doc put me on bactrim. I see it has a sulfa component. I am wondering if it is going to heal a skin infection ## Hi, Lisa! How are you? Actually, the Azulfidine tends to increase the efficacy of the Sulfamethoxazole in the Bactrim, which may make it work better, but it also increases the risk of adverse side effects. You can learn more Azulfidine details here and you can find more Bactrim details here. In light of that, you should check with your doctor and make sure they are safe to take together, because sulfa based antibiotics can cause some problematic side effects. Hi I rescued a horse and it has a puncture wound in her breast area looks like maybe for a t post can I give her Bactrim DS 800-160 tab and if so how many should I crush in her food?? Thanks!! ## Hi CC, Sorry to hear about your horses condition. From what little bit I'm finding, some people suggest giving one 800/160 mg. Bactrim tablet per 100 lbs of horse (basing their dosage on the weight of the horse). Although I'd imagine this number could vary greatly depending on the severity of the condition. I also realize you posted this almost a week ago, but it sounds like your best bet would probably be to consult a veterinary clinic who specializes in horse treatment. You can learn more about this drug on the page for Bactrim Details I wish your horse well and hope it improves soon!

I'm currently being treated for prostatitis w/Cipro. Also have chronic epydidymitis. Originally prescribed Bactim, but showed no improvement after 4 days, so was given 60 day course of Cipro. I've researched Cipro on the internet and am now very concerned about being on a fluoroquinolone drug for such a long time. I also suffer a lot from issues related to my gut. Could I expect it to still be effective to stop the Cipro & go back & finish the Bactrim prescription now? I have completed 10 days on the Cipro and have about 6 days of pills left on the Bactrim. Meanwhile, I still have pain & symptoms related to my prostate & testicle. ## The Bactrim is more likely to cause you problems, since it is a sulfa based antibiotic and many people end up being very sensitive ...
