How Long Does Methadone Withdrawal Last

I've been on various pain meds since I was 21 due to a VERY serious car accident where I broke my back and did a lot of other damage to my body. I've moved up through SEVERAL meds over the years, and have NEVER been fully pain free, but at times able to live life fairly normally, others not so much! I've been on methadone for a few years now and was actually doing pretty great! Didn't completely take away my pain, but made life liveable and side effects were something I could handle. But due to issues it was causing with my heart my pain doc just switched me from 10 mg 3x day to 30 mg of morphene er 3 times day. It's only been a week, but I'm MISERABLE! In a GREAT deal of pain, haven't slept in days, not only from being uncomfortable, but from withdrawal (I d...

Methadone is the worst drug. There are alternative ways to detox from opiates. I experienced cold turkey withdrawals after being on methadone for 12 years (90 mg. daily). Living hell. Severe withdrawals lasted two weeks, but less severe withdrawals lasted two months. Further withdrawals lasted for months. I couldn't think, walk, write... I was so miserable. If you are on Vicodin, Norco, etc., don't switch to Methadone. You have no idea what you're playing with. Trust someone who's been there (clean date: 2/1/2005) ## Hello, Caowens! How are you? I'm very sorry about what you've been through, but also congratulate you on sticking it out and becoming clean. Your post is very much appreciated, because many people do seem to see Methadone as a miracle drug, but they ...

Hello everyone who is one methadone and wants to get off. I was on methadone for 6 years....I wanted to get off so I went to a rehab and did a 30 day suboxone detox getting down to 1 mg for the last 3 days. After 2 days off suboxone I started to get sick once again and decided to get back on methadone. That lasted for about a year before I had finally had enough. I did research and did a 16 day detox from 108 mg to 0 with minor side effects compared to the hell I know methadone withdrawal can be. This is what I did and it worked for me. I can't believe drs aren't talking of the benefits of DXM. Every day before dosing I took 100 mg of Dxm, and drank a few cups of grapefruit juice, the juice increases the effects of the methadone because it inhibits the enzyme that metabolites it...

Hi there, this is for the people who are on methadone / or Suboxone. I've been on methadone for an opiate addiction, for a year now. My clean date is feb 2, 2015. At first, methadone was the best thing that had ever happened to me. I finally felt normal, and thought I was ready to get my life back on track. Well.. What a lie that was. I was at 75 mlgs of methadone from February 2015-August 2015, then started tapering off at 5 mlgs a week. I have a rapid metabolizer, so methadone never lasted longer than 10 hours in my system. Now I'm at 30 mlgs and I'm living in hell! I'm in constant withdrawal, body aches, sweating, hot /cold, emotional, aggressive... Etc. All I want is to feel normal again, but don't want to be tied on a leash to the methadone anymore! People say t...

So if you are in severe pain and in the middle of nowhere and the only thing anyone has is methadone if you only took it once till you could get back and get help would you go through withdrawals? ## Hello, Ricky! How are you? According to the FDA information on Methadone, it has happened to some people, but it is a very rare occurrence. One would usually have to take it for a longer period of time to experience withdrawals. With one dose, you'll usually just feel sick and fatigued, afterwards. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with? ## DO NOT TAKE METHODONE IF YOU HAVE USED SUBOXONE IN THE LAST 3 DAYS. I promise you...

Is the worst over with or do I have worse days ahead to look forward to?? ## Hello, Deckgirl! How are you doing? Yes, withdrawals and rebound effects may still be forthcoming. Methadone is notorious for causing such problems and it does tend to last in your body for quite awhile, after you stop taking it, so it's often a delayed effect. Learn more Methadone details here. It may not happen to you, though, there's no way to know for sure ahead of time. Have you consulted your doctor for assistance? ## i have been on methadone for 8 years and recently got in trouble for using benzos so they r doing a rapid deto...

I've taken 80 mg liquid Methadone for six years. This is my second attempt to kick this devil off my shoulder. I tapered myself down over a two week period and took my last dose two weeks ago. It hasn't been nearly as hard as quitting cold turkey, yet it has still been hell. When will I feel myself again and what are the effects of long term use? ## HI! Sorry about the problems that you're having. How are you feeling today? With Methadone it's very hard to say when or if you may feel like yourself again. There is actually an increasing reluctance to use it now, because it tends to create cravings and withdrawal symptoms that never go away for some people. That's why most addicts that are treated with it end up on a lifetime maintenance dose. Have you considered seein...

I started taking methadone about 10yrs ago for pain. Started with 80mg a day and by the 2nd yr I was down to 40-50 mg a day. Over this past year I weaned myself off to nothing VERY slowly. It has been a month and I still can't sleep and feel like crap. Any replies would be appreciated. ## Methadone is notoriously hard to stop, it's very well known to cause severe withdrawals and cravings that can last a very long time. It may actually take a couple months, before you start to feel back to normal. That's why many people treated with it for drug addiction end up on a lifetime maintenance dose of it, rather then becoming completely drug free. The FDA classifies this medication as an opiate, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, ...

I was on methadone for six years, it has been 19 days sent I have stopped taking my 95 mg a day. I have never felt so sick. I can not walk without it feeling so bad. I hope to be better someday. I want to know how long. ## That is a rather high dosage to stop cold turkey. Methadone is usually tapered, to try to minimize the withdrawal effects. They can be very bad, which is why many people end up on a lifetime maintenance dose and never entirely get off the drug. Some things you may experience can include: nausea, dizziness, chills and diarrhea. The withdrawals can usually last about a month, they should slowly improve as the drug is processed out of your system and your body gets used to not having it. How are you doing, now? ## Well...why on earth would you do such a thing? Methadone ...

Omg I'm f***n miserable! I didn't think I would have withdrawals this bad after only a month and a half of taking thus drug everyday. It's literally comparable to a milder xanax withdrawal. Yes, I did abuse it. I would take 3 0.1 mgs 2-3 times a day. Tolerance goes up extra quick with this drug. I have none left and I'm on my 3rd day of feeling like s***. I'm on a hundred and 30 milligrams of methadone every day, and it's not even taking care of me in the morning times because of how s***ty I feel. Woah good lord I f***d up royally lol my tolerance for things is always extra high because of how long I've done drugs. I refuse to tell my clinic and I just need some help because I can't find any info about how long it stays in the body when you stop it cold ...

I have been on Methadone for about 3 years for long term pain management and the stomach issues are awful. I went from 30 to 10 two years ago and have now been 3 days on 7.5 with no withdrawals yet. When will they start? I have clonidine and Ativan from the doctor to help, but I have a 3 day conference in July 7-9 and need to be pain free at 7.5 by then. Then I will take the last 2 weeks of summer to get to 5 mg. ## Hello, Lisa! How are you? I'm sorry, but there's no definitive time frame that I can give you in response. It can vary from person to person. Have you experienced any, yet? The FDA lists the typical withdrawal symptoms as possibly including nausea, diarrhea, fever, chills and rebound pain. Can anyone that's taken it give an approximate time frame that may help? #...

I've been taking a high dose of Methadone for the last 5 years around 100 mg. My last dose was Sunday of Methadone, and I went to the hospital last night and they gave me 8 mg of Morphine. I now have my prescription for Subutex 8 mg tablets. So I have been in withdrawal from Methadone for 4 full days, and its been over 12 hours from taking the Morphine. Am I safe to take Subutex? I have been in serious, serious withdrawals, reason why I was in the hospital... It took 2 & 1/2 things of fluids to get me hydrated again, I was experiencing it all. Throwing Up, Diahrrea, hot/cold flashes, chills, runny nose, pale, couldn't hold anything down "NOT EVEN WATER", muscle spasms, crawling skin s***, all of it. I have a long story, I'll try to give some context with the important parts. History before methadone not important I guess. Been on 120mg for first 5 years and the last 5 years with 90mg (always liquid). Had some kind of nervous meltdown a couple of months ago and almost committed suicide. Started cutting myself badly. That urge almost got away now but I just want to feel something again. So a week(ish) ago I started drastically reducing dose, and stopped taking it 4 days ago. I had 2 hours sleep total since then thanks to some sleep medicine. My skin feels like it's burning, but it's a cold burning, all the time. I have this awful feeling in my belly that never goes away. When I lay down to try and sleep my legs hurt so much I only wish all the kicking, voluntary and invol...

I was on methadone for 2 years at 60 mg. Stopped cold turkey, was in hell for 5 weeks. Please stay away from this devil. My opinion is it's the worst drug on the planet. Also my dad was slowly dying from cancer during my wd. I hate that drug! ## Lbreezy, You actually went cold turkey from 60 mg everyday to zero with nothing to assist in your Withdrawl process?? It's hard to believe you didn't need to be hospitalized that's a very serious Withdrawl, I'm sure your still experiencing protracted withdrawals this condition can last up to 6 months or more... How are you? You have to be in full withdrawal, before taking Suboxone, or it may throw you into dangerous precipitated withdrawals, unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. I successfully weaned myself off of a 8 year opioid addiction. The last drug I was on was Methadone 30mg a day for about a year but I took every medication for pain at one point or another. Overdosing 3 in the process. I had major spine surgery in October 2016 to straighten my spine and fused 6 discs. I went from 30 mg a day to 10mg very fast, stayed there a month or so then I went to 5mg/day. Stayed there for a few weeks and went to 2.5mg (My PM Dr. gave me a prescription for 5mg tabs that are scored). A few weeks later I was down to 1.25mg. I did that for 2 weeks then I quit one night. No withdrawals! I can feel every screw in my back but I don't care because I am free of addiction.

I been on methadone for 9 years, oxy and fentynal b4 that ! Now I been off methadone for 2 months I am now on suboxone, how long do the post acute withdrawals last I still feel horrible I mean better then I was of course but I got this ring ing on my head and wen I relax or try sleep I feel horrible! !!!! It's like there is fire in my blood and it's such a strong feeling. Anyone help please????????? ## Hello, Ldawg! How are you doing? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having. It sounds like you might not be on a high enough dosage of the Suboxone to prevent it. Some people do require a higher one, for awhile, then it can be lowered once they are past this. I tried taking a suboxone 2 days after my last dose of methadone but am now in withdrawal. Can I take methadone now to bring me out? ## @JD To my knowledge there shouldn't be a problem with taking methadone "after" suboxone. Apparently if it's the other way around (suboxone "after" methadone), only then would you have to wait it out for several days in order to avoid being put into immediate withdrawals. I've also seen comments from other patients going from suboxone to methadone within a 24 hour period who said that they were completely fine and didn't experience any problems with sickness or withdrawal. But if you have personal experience going through this process that may be any different from what I've witnessed, please do post your feedback on t...
