Does Clindamycin work for an abscessed tooth and when will the pain stop? My tooth hurts so bad and I don't have insurance to cover the cost. I only work part time. ## Hello, Cali! How are you? It may work, if it does, you should notice an improvement after taking it for a full 3 days. However, the issue is that it is not going to correct the underlying problem that caused the infection and it is going to end up returning. So, you still need to have the tooth taken care of by your dentist. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I have a nasty bridge that needs to be removed. One tooth under needs to be extracted. I have a tooth infection and started taking clindamycin for it i have to get my teeth extracted in 6days. Will the infection be gone by then so i can have the tooth extracted? ## Hi Debbie, Sorry to hear about your tooth infection. I'm actually in the same boat as you, getting an extraction in the next month or so for an infected wisdom tooth. Most people get them taken out when they're young, but at age 25 I guess it's better late than never Lol. At any rate, most antibiotics such as Clindamycin, are often prescribed for 7-10 days, depending on the severity of the infection. But my guess is that the vast majority of the infection may be eradicated well within the parameters of that time frame, especially closer to the 7th day mark, when many patients are actually finished w...

I have an abscess in my anal region. I was prescribed Clindamycin and this is my fourth day taking it 3 times a day. I had a small swallow and now it has become big and painful. I was wondering if this medicine works and if so, how long it takes because everyday the pain is going up. ## Hello, Ronaldo! How are you? I'm very sorry that you're in pain. Generally, if an antibiotic is working, you should start to see improvement after taking it for a full 3 days and no worsening after taking it for a full 24 hours, thus, you should likely return to your doctor as this might not be the right medication to help you. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I...

Hello I have some liquid Clindamycin from 2 months ago and I was wondering if it was still good? About how long is the shelf life of this product? ## Hello, Melliss! How are you? What is the expiration date on it from your pharmacy? Liquids tend to degrade faster and usually have a very short shelf life, anywhere from 10 days to a month, in many cases. ## I have an ear ache. Hey, I was prescribed Doxycycline to treat Impetigo. That worked a little, then I was prescribed 300mg of Clindamycin. My question is will this knock out the skin rashes and fluid filled scabs? ## If it has been prescribed for you, the only thing you can do is try it and see. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Have you taken it? If so, was there any improvement?

I took Clindamycin 300mg cap 4x/day for 10 days. I still have an abcess on my neck (caused possibly from ingrown hair and my picking?). The lump has gotten much smaller, from large ping-pong to regular grape, but never came to head, and when i originally asked the doc about cleaning it out, she said we will see if this works first. I'm not happy i took such a risk and then read that these type of "cysts" cannot receive the antibiotic because they are closed off. ....etc. I finished pills yesterday. Will it continue to work like other antibiotics I've taken? I'm not sure when I should go back to the doc. ## Hello, Michelle! How are you? Yes, it can continue to work for a few days. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache...

I have some clindamycin left over from a few months ago and I was curious if it treats a urinary tract infection ## The drugs most often used to treat routine, uncomplicated UTI's are trimethoprim (Trimpex), trimethoprim/sufamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra, Cotrim), amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox, Wymox), nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Furadantin), and ampicillin [1]. Although Clindamycin is not on the above list, it does not necessarily mean that it won't work. The thing with UTIs is that urine testing and/or medical history may be required to determine the specific bacteria causing the infection. Different meds for different bacetria. Hope this helps. I am taking clindamycin for nrsa staph infection of my leg, will this treatment cure me of staph infection ? ## Hi, Barry! Sorry about the infection, I hope it clears up fast. And yes, many strains of MRSA are still susceptible to Clindamycin, but it is becoming increasingly resistant. Thus, there's really no way to say if it's going to work for the infection you have. The only thing you can do is try it and see. Learn more Clindamcyin details here. It may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. To know if it's working, you shouldn't see any worsening of the infection after the first 24 hours of taking it and you should start to see improvement after 3 days, if not you'll need to contact your doctor. Are there any other que...

I am taking Clindamycin for a wisdom tooth infection. It works great yet I want to forewarn any women who may decide to take it. It gave me a nasty yeast infection. I am talking about swollen lips, itchy, dry, very uncomfortable to sit for long periods of time. It seems most antibiotics help with one thing and cause other problems. Clindamycin breaks up proteins down there and it causes yeast to grow. If your doctor prescribed you this, get yourself some OTC (over the counter) yeast infection treatment when you go and get the meds from the pharmacy. ## That can be a normal side effect of most antibiotics, in both men and women, although of course for men, the yeast infections are usually only oral. If you are prone to getting them from any particular antibiotic, it is always a good idea...

I am finishing a 7 day dose of clindamycin 300 mg taken once every 8 hours on Friday, which leaves me with no weekend coverage if dental infection isn't gone. If you are currently taking Clindamycin for a staph infection, will you still continue to get small folliculitis bumps on your face, chest, neck and/or back? Or is that a sign that the antibiotic is not working a 100% and your doctor may need to switch you to something stronger to completely clear the infection? ## Hello, Misty! How are you? How long have you been taking it? In this case, it could take a few days for it to start to work to clear it up. But usually, you should start to see improvement after 3 full days of taking it. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. ## I'm on clindamycin for 3 days now and although the pain has subsided the abscess is still there. I started clindamycin about 30 hours ago. Before I got it my wisdom tooth was hurting excruciatingly, and I had a bit of swelling. After taking it, the pain is pretty much gone, but the swelling has gotten worse. My question is; does the swelling usually get worse at first after taking this medication? And about how long before it improves? I'm very nervous. I always think the worst. Lol. Any answer would help. Thanks. ## The general rules for an antibiotic are that, if it is working, you should not see any worsening after taking it for a full 24 hours, and you should start to see improvement after taking it for a full days. My daughter has just been prescribed 8ml of clindamycin palmitate 3 times a day for 7 days. She has been fighting ear infections, sinus infections and upper respiratory infections for the past 4 months. She has been on amoxicillin, Augmentin, septra and cefdinir and neither of these have worked. I took her to an ENT last week and recommended we remove her tonsils and adenoids and have ear tubes put in. She is scheduled for 3/11 however she is still running a fever off and on and has a slight cough so that is why he gave her clindamycin. I'm just worried because of the side effects of this antibiotic. I know it's a broad spectrum med so it has a higher possibility of c. Diff.... I started taking Clindamycin 36 hours ago for a tooth infection. Still in extreme pain and more swelling tonight. When will the Clindamycin start helping my infection? ## If you have been taking it for more than 24 hours and the infection/swelling has worsened, that most likely means it is not working and you may need to try a different antibiotic. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Was this prescribed for you by your doctor, or dentist? My 13" beagle is 17 yrs old. Has a heart condition. Upper left molar became inflamed. Age and condition of dog id if'y at best for operation. Was given Clindamycin 75 mg 2x a day. this is to reduce swelling of location under left eye. I can not find anything that says this would reduce swelling. Will anything else reduce swelling for the dog?v ## Clindamycin is an antibiotic used to treat or prevent infections. Thus, the swelling is probably caused by an infection and will reduce, as the antibiotic has a chance to work to clear it up. As to anything else you can use, I am sorry, but I am not familiar with the use of most medications in animals, so I don't know what would be safe or effective. Have you tried asking the vet?

I had an extraction on an abscess tooth about a week ago. Since I've been on clindamycin I've been sleepy and tired all the time. A little confusion as well, not much, but enough for me to notice. Is it normal for you to feel tired? I feel drowsy all the time since I've been taking it. ## This is a more rare side effect, but yes it does happen. Your body is fighting an infection of sorts. You will be tired. ## Opp is correct, those can be normal side effects of this antibiotic, as reported by the FDA, you may also experience nausea, headache, and diarrhea. It can also be coupled with symptoms of the infection, which will also take awhile to go away. How much longer will you be taking it? Are you on any other medications? Has there been any change? I've been taking Levaquin for about five days now for a sinus infection and it is not working at all. I took one at 1:00 today. How many hours do I have to wait to switch to a Clindamycin or an Amoxicillin? ## Hi Ann, Sorry to hear about your situation. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (umm.edu / drug interaction tool), there are no interactions listed between Levaquin, Clindamycin or Amoxicillin. That said, I'm of the theoretical opinion that you shouldn't have to wait at all... This finding does not necessarily mean that no interactions exist. However, if in doubt, your best bet would probably be to contact your prescribing doctor and/or local pharmacist just to be on the safe side. I hope this helps and that you get around to feeling better soon!
