I take Xarelto for A-fib, and have a cold with runny nose, nasal congestion and sneezing. What antihistamine can be safely taken for a cold/runny nose/sneezing, while on Xarelto? ## Pure lavender oil can act as a potent antihistamine and is recognized in oil desk references as being generally regarded as safe to use internally. Whenever I had a runny/stuffy nose or sinus infection, it never failed to ward off sneezing and coughing. I also find it beneficial for nasal congestion when I put it on a Q-tip up my nostrils. It really works wonders for me and that's why I wanted to mention it here. Another thing that people swear by are neti pots. I haven't actually used one myself, but I regularly hear brilliant things about how well they work for clearing mucous. On one last note, th...

I am a hospice nurse. We administer clear liquid morphine to our patients and teach the family how to administer it. Many are having trouble seeing how much they are pulling up in the syringe. Is is appropriate to add a very tiny minuscule amount of blue food coloring so that the patients can see the liquid and be safe? Please help. Thanks ## Hello, Pamela! How are you? I'm not sure if it would be safe, since food colorings aren't made to be used in such a manner. There are some dyes that are, so you may want to look into ordering one of them and using it. You wouldn't need a lot, just enough to add a slight tint to make it easier to see. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsines...

I thought it was looking better after first 5 days, but then the ankle (site of puncture) has gotten more swollen & a bit warm. Ultrasound revealed NO barb. Only drainage was clear and just in first 2 days. Tomorrow is 10th day of antibiotic. Should I start another round or wait & see? I have 2 prosthetic hips - so I need to be careful of infection. My tooth ache is getting worse. I had a Diclogem tablet, still did not help. Please advise. ## Hi, Connie! Sorry about the toothache. Have you contacted your dentist? Most toothaches are caused by some type of damage or decay of the tooth and if it's a deep, very painful ache, then it's most likely infected and that's going to require an antibiotic, as well as getting the problem corrected. It isn't going to clear up on its own and trying to take a medication for the pain, without seeing your dentist isn't going to help a lot, because the pain will just keep returning. Dental infections have the potential to be very dangerous, if left untreated, because they can be directly linked to heart disease and heart valve infections, so it isn't a risk that's worth ta...

I WAS WONDERING WHAT THE DIF. IS BETWEEN CODEINE & HYDROCODNE? ## From what I was able to gather: Vicodine/Hydrocodone (related to codeine) is in a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics. It relieves pain. Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of hydrocodone.Together, acetaminophen and hydrocodone are used to relieve moderate-to-severe pain. Codeine is a narcotic pain reliever (analgesic). Its precise mechanism of pain relief is not clearly understood. Codeine is frequently combined with Tylenol or aspirin for more effective pain relief. Many people who have had both medications state that it's really a personal preference when it comes to choosing between the two; medications can affect everyone differently, some people get great results fro...

Can I take methadone with anitroptyline ? ## Hello, Amber! How are you? It is generally not recommended, because the combination can increase the QTc interval of your heart rhythm, which has the potential to be dangerous. They should only be taken together, if your doctor has clearly decided that the possible benefits to you outweigh the risk and is monitoring you regularly. The FDA classified Methadone as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant and its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight gain. Is there anything else I can help with?
