I'm being taken off of Neurontin/Gabapentin after seven years. I'm now crying, anxious, and itching all over! I have tried antihistamines and cortisone creams but with no relief. ## yes this is normal I went through the same thing. I was on 3600 for eight years. I weaned off very slowly. I started weening off in 2008. I am now down to 400mg and go down about 100 a week. Its so awful ## These types of problems are normal from a sudden withdrawal of any medication that affects brain chemicals, which is exactly what Gabapentin does, since it was initially discovered as an anticonvulsant. Unfortunately, since you were on it for so long, it is probably going to take several weeks for these effects to wear off, though they should gradually improve and lessen in severity. As to the itc...

Been off Gabby for 5 weeks. Feeling pretty good except still have tightness in chest off and on. Anyone else have chest pain? Was on high dose for quite a while. Got off it too fast. ## Hello, Sandy! How are you? You should have this checked out by your doctor to be safe, there are many things that could cause chest pain and some of them are very dangerous, such as heart conditions. The typical withdrawal effects of Gabapentin are listed by the FDA as possibly including nausea, dizziness, fever, chills, rebound pain, depression, anxiety, seizures and diarrhea. There's a chance the chest pain is associated, but after 5 weeks, most symptoms should be gone. Are you any other medications? ## Just B P meds! Not really a pain more of an ache. Not bad and with all the other withdrawals it ...

as soon as I got off double doses of gabapentin(300x6), I got nausea every day for weeks. I have acis reflux, so we thought it was that; could this be a reaction to total withdrawal? ## Yes, if you did a sudden withdrawal, rather than tapering the dose, or even if you tapered, but stopped at a dose that was a bit too high for what your body could handle, it's possible that it could have caused it. Learn more Gabapentin details here. Have things improved yet? With the acid reflux, it's quite easy for your gastric system to be upset and set off balance, so it could even have been a combination of both factors.

I've taken Gabapentin for 12 years increasing every time the pain worsened. In December my dose was 3600mg daily plus 600mg Lyrica. My trigeminal neuralgia pain was getting worse so i had brain surgery in December 2015. A week later on doctors instructions i eliminated one Gabapentin a week, then one Lyrica a week.. for the last three weeks i have been so nauseous i am miserable.. How long can this last? Is there any over the counter relief? ## After being on it for so many years, it may take over a month for all your withdrawal symptoms to go away. As reported by the FDA, they may also include fever, diarrhea and rebound pain. I'm not sure what might help with the nausea. Possibly Bonine, if your doctor approves of you trying it. Its typical side effects may include dizziness, ...

Hello. I've been taking 1200 mg Neurontin (600 twice daily) for around 4 yrs. I'd like to wean off of it and will off course do so with my Dr.'s supervision. However I will not completely trust her schedule for weaning because of a past experience with her. What schedule would you recommend? I think I read somewhere a recommendation of reducing 10% per month but that seems awfully slow. ## I meant to title it gabapentin reduction schedule not withdrawal schedule!! Can't find a way to edit this. ## Hello, JP! How are you? Well, it does need to be a slow taper, coming off of it too fast can create a risk of seizures. Many people that stopped too suddenly also experienced other symptoms, such as feeling sick, dizzy, spacey and experienced mood swings, among others. The FDA ...

I've been on Gabapentin for two days, taking 100mg twice. Will I have withdrawals if I stop taking it? ## No, there should be any issues after such a short period of time on such a low dose. Why are you stopping it, already? The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, fluid retention, mood swings, and weight gain. ## Okay, thank you. :) I could be wrong but it seems as if Gabapentin only made things worse for me. The pain I was having prior to taking it, seemed to get more frequent. Also, my chest pain seemed to last longer than usual. ## I stopped cold turkey and now have been itching for two days like crazy. ## Try a histamine.

I am an opioid patient and when I can't get relief a friend told me that taking 400mgs of gabapentin helps the sickness. Is this true? ## Yes it does help, 600 pregab 2 times a day helped me a great deal. I have tried many times to come off opiates over 20 years in fact, never much success. But was able to come off completely with pregab just be warned, if taken for to long they are also addictive. ## Pregabapentin are stronger than gabapentin, and i meant 600mgs pregab, you can also use gabapentin it just depends how much opoid you are on, mine was a bad addiction. ## Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant that is also used to help treat certain types of nerve pain. ref: Medline Plus Gabapentin It may help with some withdrawal symptoms, but it is a prescription only medication, so you wou...

Does gabapentin help at all with opiate withdrawals? Does it make it at all any more comfortable? ## It may help alleviate some of the symptoms and prevent the risk of possible seizures, according to FDA reports. Has your doctor prescribed it for you? Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, mood swings, and weight changes. Are you on any other medications? ## I've been off methadone for 9 days and I took 3 Co-codamol. Will that make my withdrawals even worse? Also, does gabapentin help with opiate withdrawal? ## Hello, I am currently on day 6 of being off opiates after a 60-80mg (give or take a day) habit for 2 years... My first 2 days I didn't use anything to cope with withdrawals. Over the next 3 days, I took 900mg of gabapentin, 600mg of gab...

Only side effect I'm having is crazy itching from head to toe. On gabapentin 300mg 2xs a day for 4 months due to nerve pain for carpal tunnel both hands. GABA did not help pain but helped me sleep. Had surgery last month, wanted to stop since sleeping better. But now I read here that some folks ARE having itching too! What can I take to help? ## Some antihistamines may help, if you're allowed to take them, or a hydrocortisone cream. But really, it's just going to take time for this withdrawal effect to wear off and go away on its own. You may also experience depression, anxiety and diarrhea. If you stopped abruptly, without tapering it, you should be aware that there can be a risk of seizures, so if you experience one seek immediate medical attention. Is there anything else ...

I am trying to wean off of gabapentin, but the worst part is the itching, and the crazy restlessness at night. I’m taking one a day at 300 mg in the evening. By the time evening comes again the itching starts happening. How do I wean off this/300 mg a day, and is there anything I can take for the itching. I did start taking magnesium a couple days ago. I was on it for about 4 to 5 weeks, at 1800 mg a day. No one told me to not go cold turkey, so I did and that was a horrible week. So I went back to taking one a day and I want to get off of these now. ## This medication comes in lower dosages, so you could speak to your doctor about using 100mg capsules, or tablets to help you taper off of it. The FDA warns that other withdrawal effects may include nausea, dizziness, depression, an...

I was on 300 mg of gabapentin for 3 months. I'm weaning off it by taking the 300 mg capsule every other day as per what the pharmacist recommended. How long should I do this? It's been a week. The days I don't take it I have a headache that just won't go away. I want to be done with this drug. ## Hi Yeb, Just wanted to congratulate you on doing your due diligence with weaning off gabapentin. It really sounds like you're on the right track with the pharmacists recommendations of dosing every other day. However I think in order to take it to the next step, you have to ask yourself what seems feasible based on how your body has already responded. All I can say is that it were me in this position I'd probably be very strategic about my approach; perhaps by going down...

I started taking Gabapentin 300mg x 3 daily on May 13,015 for severe shingles pain in my ear, mouth and face. June 16,2015 I began having memory lapses not walking straight as well as anxiety. My doctor told me to go off cold turkey. I was to be taking tylenol for the pain as it was not as severe. I also take .5 mg Lorazepam for anxiety up to 2 times per day as needed for my copd depression. I also take .25 Zoloft once daily. I had forgotten to take my Zoloft for three days last week. Now I am having nausea all day long as well as feeling like just crawling in bed. I also have hot flashes. I now do not know which one I am having WD from? Doc says if it continues make an appointment. Take tums for the nausea. They do nothing. I cannot eat until I take a Lorazepam ... as this settles the ...

I have taken Gabapentin for over seven years for pain. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. I recently read how Gabapentin can cause brain lapses and cause Alzheimer's symptoms. I have been experiencing forgetfulness. I want to be off of this drug and decided to quit. I was taking 1800 mgs daily and am down to taking 300 mgs daily. My withdrawal symptoms have been feeling like I am dying, terrible sweating, intense itching, nausea, stomach pain and diahrrea. I can't sleep, nightmares and headaches. I am not giving in.... I want off of this. When will these symptoms ease up (I pray they do) I will cut my pills in half and take only 150 mgs daily.... until gradually I have stopped. My doctor, also over seven years ago, put me on Cymbalta for pain. I gradually stopped taking it a year ago....

On Gabapentin for 2 months. Started at 900 mgs (3 doses 3xs/day) for anxiety after getting off Vicoden. Went down to 600/day after 1 week, then 400 3 weeks later. Having severe burning all over body, really horrific. Has anyone else experienced this? And, how much longer should I expect to ween off the 400? Went to dr about burning and he said I needed to increase dosage but I am fearful since I'm down to 400. The burning is the worse at night, unbearable. Have ordered magnesium taurate since others have indicated this will help with withdrawal? ## Hello, Bobby! How are you? If you withdrawal too rapidly from a medication, it can cause a rebound effect of the conditions it is actually intended to relieve, while you're taking. Gabapentin is known to help with nerve pain, thus you...

I have been prescribed pain relief for th past 2/3 years.I have recently had surgery and am titrating myself of the medication. I have been on..Oxycontin 40 m.g twice daily, and. Gabapentin 600mg.3xtimes daily. What withdrawal symptoms,if any, should I expect? ## If you taper off of them, the withdrawal symptoms should be fairly mild, but you may still experience some nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and rebound pain. Learn more Oxycontin details here. Learn more Gabapentin details here. With the Gabapentin, the worst thing I had after trying it was a kind of fuzzy headed feeling that lingered for awhile. Hello. I'm very new to this drug, only 7 days.I am a diabetic with bi-polar/anxiety. I was recently put on Gabapentin 300mg. 1 pill for 4 days and then told to take 1 pill 2 times a day after. I have been experiencing some normal side effects such as sleepiness, a little anxiety (it hits me for about an hour and then goes away completely) and a little bit of a loopy feeling. I did not realize I was past the 4 days and had only been taking one pill (my memory has been terrible the past few days), so I was going to start taking the 2 pills yesterday (Feb 20th). I forgot the 2nd dosage on the 20th and did not realize it until the 21st after I started feeling a crazy rapid heartbeat, severe anxiety (i wrestled with it for about 4 hours before calming down), as well as dizziness and the ...

I stopped taking a 300 mg twice a day dose of gabapentin last tues. I feel awful depressed sweaty moody irritated emotional very dizzy. How long will I keep feelin this way? My doc had me stop it right away, because I was suppose to go on lyrica. Which honestly I don't want to start taking pain or no pain. I started slurring my words on the gabapentin then felt like wherever I was, I was inside a bubble it was a terrible feeling ## If you have been on it for such a short period of time, they shouldn't last more than a few days, perhaps a week at most. but it can vary from person to person, so I can only give an average from other anecdotal reports. Lyrica is in the same class, so it may or may not cause the same type of problem for you, there's really no way to know without ...

Hi. Please help. Was only gabapentin 200mg at nighttime for just over a week. Side effects were awful. Really bad dizzy spaced out feeling. Heart racing. Couldn't hack it anymore so dropped down to 100mg for 2 nights then stopped. So total dose nor more than 2500mg in 12 days. Well I'm now day 19 post and everyday is like Groundhog Day. Dizzy and spaced out with a heavy feeling in the head. Can't drive, focus much or even read. Writing this is a chore! Some tachycardia and anxiety but would imagine this may be more to do with the frustration than anything else but who knows? Sleep is more or less ok. Drs have no idea, including pain specialists. They just quote me he half life and say should be been out of my body after 7 hours!! Read a lot about magnesium and been using it ...

It's not from the Zoloft. Your having gabapentin WD's and symptoms of interdose withdrawals IDK ## Hi! I am not sure who you were responding to, but in the future to make a response to someone's post, you can use the reply button directly under their post, so they will receive notification of your response. As to withdrawals, a person can experience them if they abruptly stop any medication that they've been taking for a long period of time. Thus, both Zoloft and Gabapentin can cause withdrawal issues, including the risk of seizures, which may be dangerous, as reported by the FDA. Other withdrawal effects may include dizziness, headache, irritability, mood swings, rebound depression, anxiety, insomnia and diarrhea. Is there anything I can help with?

I've been taking 300mg. gabapentin nightly for about 2 months I no longer want to take it because it does nothing for my back pain. Can I just stop taking it without problems. ## It is always best to taper this medication slowly, because stopping it abruptly can cause a risk of seizures. Other withdrawal effects may include rebound pain, depression, anxiety and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?
