Gabapentin Dosage

I'd like to discuss with someone about the proper dosage of this medication. Can anyone help? ## There is really no set dosage for this, though you do need to start at a low dosage and gradually add more until you find the amount that works effectively for you. Most doctors will start with 100mgs taken 2 to 3 times a day, then go up to 300 and continue adding until they find what works for each patient. It would take a tremendous amount to OD on this, which is why so many doctors like to use it, they can take the dosage very high, without danger and it has very few side effects. Your best bet then, is to take your doctors advice on what you should be taking and how often. ## I just started gabapentin. My doctor told me to take 300 mg before bedtime for the first week and then move u...

Hi, I've been on Gabapentin for about a year for back pain (I have DDD and arthritis in spine and back) I'm taking five pills a day...600mg each. I've recently been told by (family and friends) that this is a dangerous amount I'm on and they're worried. I do have a doctor appointment scheduled but my doctor left the practice and I'm having to start over with a new one. My previous dr NEVER discussed anything about this drug. She kept telling me to up the dosage until my back felt better. Well, my back pain has all but disappeared. I'm hearing so many bad things about this med and I'm actually thinking this med might be contributing to my career struggle. I write for a living, and coincidentally around the time I started this medication I began having trou...

It generally depends on your body chemistry. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache and weight gain. How often do I give gabapentin to my dog? She is 35 pounds. Do I give it to her every 8 hours? ## Please please please have your vet prescribe your dogs dosage and don't try to go it on your own! Human gabapentin has xylitol in it and is TOXIC to dogs!!!!!! ## Ps normal dosage is 1.4 mg for every pound your dog weighs once per day- again NOT human gabapentin. ## My dog is very stiff in the morning and has a hard time moving for 2hrs. My dog is also on four meds for heart disease. I'm afraid gabapentin might do more harm than good. My dog is 13 pounds, age 12-14 not sure. What do you think I should do?Thanks.

My doctor has prescribed me gabapentin 300 mg capsules. for nerve pain in my back. I'm a little confused on how to take it. He said that I can increase my dose. Does this mean that I can take two at time since one isn't helping? I only take it at night when my pain is at its worst. ## I am on same meds i take 3 of those a night ## Our doctor, who is a prof at Duke says you can take up to 2700 Mg a day. A pain specialist we also had stated that if you are taking for example 1800 Mg per day to take one 600 in morning and two 600 at night. Both said not to take major steps over 300 or 600 Mg each week, and I did find that when I upped it or took it down that had to do it slowly. I have been taking 1800 Mg for 7 years now for shingle pain that took out the nerves in my face. ## I ha...

Is this medication ever administered in intravenous dosage forms? ## From what I've read, Gabapentin appears to be available in the following dosage forms: a capsule, a tablet, an extended-release (long-acting) tablet, and an oral solution (liquid) to take by mouth. IV methods are usually pertaining to those who recreationally abuse the medication. So I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing anything other than what your doctor or health-care provider suggests, in that regard. The dosing instructions also state that you should swallow the extended-release tablets whole; and not cut, chew, or crush them. I have been on 300mg gabapentin for 4 years--never more--same dose the whole time. Can I start having withdrawal symptoms if the dosage remains the same? ## Hello, Gizmo! How are you? No, generally you shouldn't experience withdrawal symptoms, but the medication may start to lose effectiveness, so it may not work for you as well as it used to. What types of symptoms are you experiencing? ## I am doing okay. I am 33 months off of 1mg Xanax and 18 days off of 150mg tramadol. Just got worried about gabapentin reaching tolerance. I have been on it 4 years for hot flashes. Take at bedtime only. I am still having many symptoms from drug withdrawal from Xanax and tramadol. I found out that with tramadol and Xanax dosages have to be increased over time. Iwas sure hoping gabapentin was not l...

Hi I have been on Gabapentin for a month. The highest dose I could tolerate is 900mg a day. The problem is the drug has had no effect on my pain. I have tried to go up in dosage to possible get some pain relief, but I am retaining fluid at higher doses and I have Congestive Heart Failure, so this is a no-no. So..... The pain clinic wants to switch me to Topamax. Any experience or comments. Thanks! ## Hi Katia, Unfortunately, there have been quite a few of side effects reported by Topamax users. Here is a link to a thread you may consider posting in if you'd like to learn more about possible adverse reactions: Discuss/Topamax-caused-problems-159316.htm Just keep in mind that not everyone experiences side effects, since everyone's body chemistry is different. I am very sleepy-feel like I can't wake up - feel like I can't remember the last few days since starting this med ## Hello, Jen! How are you? What dosage are you on? The FDA classifies Gabapentin as an anticonvulsant that is also used to treat certain types of nerve pain and some mood disorders. Drowsiness can be a side effect of it, along with dizziness, nausea, dry mouth and weight gain. Memory loss is also listed as a possibility. Have you consulted your doctor? This might not be the right medication for you.

Does anyone drink beer or other alcohol while taking this? I start on it tonight, increasing every 5 days to 900 mg total a day. I'm curious as to how much alcohol can be tolerated and if there are any reasons to avoid it completely. I like my Budweiser. Thanks for any input. ## Alcohol should be avoided while using this medication, especially at such a high dosage, because it can aggravate the side effects, making them much more problematic. These can include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and peripheral edema. You can read more on it here: Do you have any other questions? ## what are the bad things with this drug and alcohol? ## I've taken 3600mg of Gabapentin each day for 21 months now! I drink alcohol with them & feel ok. I would just say that the Gabapentin alone will l...

Hi, I've been on Gabapentin about two years, but recently the Dr. increased the dose to 300 mg three times a day...for anxiety. I have been only trying to take it every other day instead. On the off days, I feel crummy. But if i took it daily, then the eventual withdrawal would be horrendous from what I've read. Besides that, I'd build up a tolerance to it pretty quickly and wouldn't be as effective in a short amount of time. Does anyone else take it every other day instead of daily? ## Gabapentin has a short half life of 5 to 7 hours; that’s why it’s typically prescribed 3 times a day and sometimes 4 times a day. Skipping dosages and taking it every other day can cause interdosage withdrawals when you're late on your dosage or skip a day. Gabapentin is a...

if you have had seizuries and taking dylatin can you take gabapentin for chronic pain ## Caution is advised regarding using the Gabapentin with the Phenytoin in Dilantin, because it can increase the level of central nervous system depression and psychomotor impairment that they both can cause. Has your doctor instructed you to use them both? If so, they should be monitoring you closely and they have to take the dosage of both under careful consideration.

My husband was prescribed gabapentin for severe tinnitus. . From the very first gabapentin reduced and sometimes completely stopped the tinnitus, but after about three weeks of use his tinnitus came back as strong as ever and the gabapentin gave him no relief. Has anyone else had that experience that the pills just stop working? If you continue does it start helping again? ## Hello, Chlokara! How are you? His doctor may want him to try a higher dosage, but it is doubtful that it will start helping, again, at the current dosage. Scientific studies have actually shown that Gabapentin isn't more effective than a placebo at treating tinnitus. Conversely, as listed by the FDA, it can actually cause tinnitus as a side effect, along with nausea, dizziness, weight gain and anorexia. Is ther...

I have been taking Gabapentin 600 mg, 4x per day for a total dosage of 2400 mg per day to help keep the nerve endings on my bladder calm for the past two years. I have IC [interstitial cystitis]. I'm noticing now that I'm having great difficulty with my memory and just simply recalling words to use in conversation. I'm also having right, low back pain extending into the hip, thigh and lower leg with leg pain when sleeping. This pain is making it difficult for me to walk or sit upright. I stay extremely fatigued. I'm 42 and my uro took me out of work in Oct of 2011 and I don't see myself returning to work. I just wonder if the Gabapentin is helping or worsening my condition [since IC can lead to the above complaints] and if anyone else is having any similar problems. ...

Does anyone have severe stomach cramps with this medicine? I started with 600 2 pills 3 times a day. ## You started with that high of a dosage? That could be causing your problem. Normally, this medication is started at a lower dosage and slowly titrated up, as needed. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, mood swings and weight gain. Have you discussed it with your doctor? You'll most likely need to go to a lower dose for awhile. ## IM ON THAT MEDICINE, GABAPENTIN, FOR STINGING NERVE DAMAGE, DOSE WAS 300 X 3 A DAY, I FOUND THAT IT MADE ME NOD OFF,...BY CRACKING MY HEAD ON THE TABLE, THATS WHEN I FOUND OUT I WAS NODDING OFF,I KNEW IT WAS TOO STRONG AT THAT DOSE, THEY SHOULD OF STARTED U ON A MUCH LOWER DOSE, THAT PROABLY WHY IT HURTING, LOWER DOSE. I have a question. I have 300mg gabapentin. If I'm out of the 300mg can I take 400mg? ## Hello, Denice! How are you? It would be best not to raise your dosage, without your doctor's approval. If you do, you may experience more side effects, which the FDA lists as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, mood swings and weight gain. Is there anything else I can help with?

my new prescription looks different the markings are different are they the same old G I 21 New G I 24 with MYLAN on the other side The line is the cutting line. ## Yes, they both contain 600mgs of Gabapentin, so it is the same medication and the same dosage. It is very common for your pharmacy to switch the generic manufacturer they have on hand, depending on who was offering the cheapest price at the time they needed to restock their medication. need to see pictures of pill ## I'm sorry, but due to copyright reasons, I don't have any pictures to post for you. In addition, since this is a generic, there are quite a few on the market, manufactured by different companies and they will all have different markings to denote the manufacturer and dosage. Just to give you some examples, here are the markings and descriptions of a few of the 100mg Gabapentin products: A white capsule, with the marking G 5026. An orange and white capsule, with the marking R 665 on each half. A white capsule with the marking APO 112. A gray capsule with West-ward 991. A white and clear capsule with E 91 on each half. And there are more.... Are there any markings on the pill in question?

ive been taking gabapentin for about 5 weeks. i have built up the dosage from 1 *300mg tablet per day up to 5 tablets a day.(and rising). Im concerned the gabapentin will become less effective as I build up my dosage. Compared to other tablets ive taken they have been quite effective with less side effects. tried to have a "day off" from them and it didnt go so well. Pain management tablets is likely to be a long term requirement as i have no diagnosis. Should i try to take a "break" for a day every now and again to slow down tolerance (does doing that make them less effective)? is tolerance a justified concern? ## Hello, Sid! How are you?
