They have me on gabbapentin 600 mg 3 times a day (1200mg at bed time). So a total of 2400mg daily for bipolar and anxiety. I've become heavier in weight and impotent. Yes, those can be side effects of this medication, as reported by the FDA. You may also experience dry mouth, dizziness, mood swings and headache. if prescribed 600 mgs of gabapetin 3 times a day, is it ok to take all 3 at bedtime instead of during the day due to drowsiness? ## Hi rita, Depending on what you're taking it for, the usual adult dose is taken orally in 3 divided doses. If you do take it all at once (which you can), then I'd imagine you'd have to take more at some point in the day when it begins to wear off; thus making you take more than you are prescribed to take. Have you talked to your doctor about upping your dosage?

I was taking gabapentin 400mg 2x a day. Dr bumped me up to 600 2x a day, and I feel unsteady and wired in the head. Will my body adjust to it? Also he prescribed klonipin 1mg at bed. ## Hello, Kim! How are you doing? Yes, it is normal to experience side effects, any time your dosage is raised and they should taper off in about 4 weeks or so, once your body gets used to the new dosage. Typical side effects of Gabapentin may include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, mood swings and weight gain. Klonopin is a benzodiazepine that's most commonly used to treat anxiety and nervous disorders, though it can also help with insomnia. It carries the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability. If the symptoms continue or ...

I had initially broken tablets in half and then read instructions to take at next dose or asap or throw away. I am afraid I jumped the gun in breaking them. Are these half pills less effective? Is there a danger? I have this need to know why discard. ## Yes, they do need to be used within a couple days of splitting them, they tend to lose effectiveness very fast, thus you do need to dispose of them. Side effects to this medication may include nausea, dizziness, headache, weight changes and mood swings. Gabapentin can cause these types of side effects in anywhere between 1 to 7% of the people that use it. Since it sounds like they were pretty severe and caused him problems walking, its probably not the right medication for him, or it may be too high of a dosage. ## I am a diabetic patient. I complained of pain in the body and hardened hand movements. Doctor prescribed Gabapentin USP 300 mg Capsules for night and 100mg capsules for the morning. Is there a big difference between the 100 mg and 300 mg pills? I’m currently taking 2 100 mg pills 3 xs a day (600 mg total) for a forearm injury but don’t know hos much a difference it makes between these 2 pills. If you have started at the same dose please respond if taking a stronger pill than what I am doing. ## Other than the notable difference in milligrams (potency), each pill is also going to come with a different set of inactive ingredients, otherwise known as binders and fillers. To my understanding, these seemingly inert substances can actually affect bioavailability and even cause some concern for individuals who may be hypersensitive to certain chemicals. Now I'm not saying that your experience will be anything like this, but I do feel that binders and fille...

I have been taking Gabapentin 600 mg, 4x per day for a total dosage of 2400 mg per day to help keep the nerve endings on my bladder calm for the past two years. I have IC [interstitial cystitis]. I'm noticing now that I'm having great difficulty with my memory and just simply recalling words to use in conversation. I'm also having right, low back pain extending into the hip, thigh and lower leg with leg pain when sleeping. This pain is making it difficult for me to walk or sit upright. I stay extremely fatigued. I'm 42 and my uro took me out of work in Oct of 2011 and I don't see myself returning to work. I just wonder if the Gabapentin is helping or worsening my condition [since IC can lead to the above complaints] and if anyone else is having any similar problems. ...

Please give me information about the harmful effects of this drug if u take it without having a prescription. ## Hello, Terri! How are you? The effects of any given medication do not change, whether someone does, or does not have a prescription, the only thing that changes is the legality of it. Under current U.S. FDA drug laws, it is illegal to have it, or take it, if it has not been prescribed for you. It is an anticonvulsant that is also used to treat certain types of nerve pain, and some mood disorders. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, mood swings, and weight gain. Is there anything else I can help with?

How are you? I'm very sorry that you're in pain. You should definitely speak to your doctor, it might not be the right medication for you to handle your pain. There is also a risk of stomach damage and/or liver damage from taking the Advil frequently in such amounts. You are at the current maximum for the Gabapentin. The FDA lists the typical side effects of these medications as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight changes. What is causing your pain? ## Verwon, interesting that you should tell Alan that his...

I am a 45 yr old woman who suffers from reflex sympathetic dystrophy and was prescribed nortriptylin cap 25 mg at bedtime and gabapentin tab 600 mg 3 times per day. I take 600 mg. of gabapentin (3) times a day for nerve pain. For me it has been a miracle drug. I do have difficulty if not almost impossible losing weight and have even gained some. It has been worth the trade off to be able to feel better. Does anyone know how to counteract this? ## Hi Agnes, Sorry to hear about your challenges with Gabapentin. According to the National Library of Medicine, rapid weight gain happens to be a general side effect of this medication. I'm not a doctor, but coming from someone with an athletic background, the best advice I can offer for counteracting it would probably be to follow a strict diet and exercise program. Something that you can commit to as long as you're taking the medication. I would also recommend drinking plenty of water (making that ...

My mother has been taking Gabapentin 600 mg, twice a day for several years. Recently her Dr. Lowered her dose to 300 mg twice a day. He said the FDA would not allow him to give her a larger dose because of her age, 93 years old. What can you tell me about this? ## It's been found that with some medications, such as Gabapentin, the elderly are more prone to experiencing side effects and/or severe complications. It has seriously endangered the lives of some of them, when their doctors weren't monitoring them closely, so the FDA has started a recent crackdown and can hold the doctors responsible for such harm. The concern has gotten so great, that many insurance companies are just refusing to cover the medications for anyone over 65, or so. Is there anything else I can help with? #...

Hello. I've been taking 1200 mg Neurontin (600 twice daily) for around 4 yrs. I'd like to wean off of it and will off course do so with my Dr.'s supervision. However I will not completely trust her schedule for weaning because of a past experience with her. What schedule would you recommend? I think I read somewhere a recommendation of reducing 10% per month but that seems awfully slow. ## I meant to title it gabapentin reduction schedule not withdrawal schedule!! Can't find a way to edit this. ## Hello, JP! How are you? Well, it does need to be a slow taper, coming off of it too fast can create a risk of seizures. Many people that stopped too suddenly also experienced other symptoms, such as feeling sick, dizzy, spacey and experienced mood swings, among others. The FDA ...
