What are the side effects of Furosemide? ## As with many diuretics, Furosemide can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, including loss of potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium. It is especially important to prevent potassium loss. Excessive use of Furosemide will most likely lead to a metabolic alkalosis due to hypochloremia and hypokalemia. It should be used with caution in horses with liver problems or electrolyte abnormalities. Overdose may lead to dehydration, change in drinking patterns and urination, seizures, GI problems, kidney damage, lethargy, collapse, and coma. I was prescribed by my doctor to take 1 tablet each morning. I have a lot of lung, bone, reflex and other issues. On O2 daily now. Are there any side effects I should watch for? Also, on the same day I was prescribed to take a Potassium Chloride Micro 10meq ER tab once daily. Any suggestions? I have a lot of GI issues. ## The FDA lists the typical side effects of Furosemide as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, dehydration, and hypotension. The biggest thing to watch out for is the dehydration. Please make sure that you are taking in enough fluids each day. Are you on any other medications, or just these 2?

It's been two days since you posted this, so I'm guessing that you're over any symptoms that the drug may have caused you. 80mg of furosemide is a high dose, but if you made it threw the day ok then I personally wouldn't stay worried. If for some reason you still notice any effects from it, I would highly recommend that you go to your doctor and let him know what happened. He o...

Hi, I'm from the UK. My 78yr old mum has been prescribed 120mg furosemide daily for heart failure, but the side effects are dreadful and two days ago she decided to stop taking them. She has been on them for 9 months and I don't think it is wise for her to stop them suddenly. Is she putting herself at risk by doing this? Thank you ## Hello, Cate! How is your mum doing? Yes, she could certainly be putting herself at risk. Congestive heart failure is caused by high blood pressure, which causes the body to retain too much fluid. The intent of this medication is to help remove that excess fluid, to reduce the strain on her heart, so it can function better and more easily, thus, if she stops taking it suddenly, she could experience elevated blood pressure, elevated heart rate and, go...

My Furosemide dose continues at three 20mg pills twice a day, but a change occurred with the manufacturer. It was Westward (54 840) and now it's Solco Health (V 3169). My daytime blood pressure is now dropping. Is there any correlation between this and the differences in pills? Both are 20mg tablets. ## How low is it dropping? Have you made any other changes to your diet, or lifestyle? Sometimes, as ones blood pressure gets lower, medication doses need to be lowered to keep it from going too low. Are you also making sure that you are staying hydrated? Furosemide works by removing excess fluid from the body, and if you become dehydrated, that will also cause your blood pressure to drop. Other side effects may include dizziness, headache, and increased urination.

I want to make sure these pills work together not against each other. My blood pressure is in the range of 165/89 still and I feel dizzy. ## Hello, Pat! How are you?
