I've been on heavy opiates since 2001. I am at the lowest I've ever been(150mcg/h) the patches say they will last 72hours. I have to change mine every 48. Is this common? Also today is the first time I'm using expired patches. Is this safe? ## Hello, Agro! How are you doing? They may be less effective, but as long as they aren't dried out, cracking/tearing and leaking, they shouldn't be dangerous. Did you run out of your regular prescription? This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. ## Yea I ran out...and was having insurance problems. They were so weak! I got my reg patches back tho. Thnx for the tip. Another question....they switched the b...

How safe is it to use a fentanyl 50mg. Patch that is 4 years old, after being prescribed 80mg oxycontin every 8 hrs. ## It does not become dangerous, once expired, but it does start to lose effectiveness, so it would be best to dispose of it and take the medication that your doctor has prescribed. The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have fentanyl patches that expired in 2011. Can you still use them? Are they dangerous or just loose there potency? ## Hello, Jaebeau! How are you? They lose potency, being several years expired, they are not likely to be very effective now and you should just dispose of them. It would be best to see your doctor for a new prescription, if needed. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. What is expiration date on Fentanyl patch with lot number 267722 ## There's actually a lot of conflicting information around the topic of expired medication. Despite what your packing may say, according to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. This conclusion was based upon a study conducted at the request of the US military due to stockpiles of expensive drugs they could otherwise need to replace every few years. The conclusion was that 90% of those drugs remained effective 10 - 15 years after the expiration date. I don't know whether or not the drug you have happens to be one of these drugs from the study... (I have no...

An expired 5mg Fentanyl patch circa 1999 ... Can this be taken in lieu of Morphine 60mg? Safe? ## No, that patch is very old and likely retains no efficacy. All medications degrade over time and this one is quite old. It would be best to stick with your Morphine, as prescribed. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?

i have half of a 50mg fentanyl patch and im wondering if you can take it? ## It is not safe to do this with any medication, they should only be used in the manner that they are intended to be used. There is a very high risk of overdose, with Fentanyl, because it is over 80 times stronger than Morphine and even the non-gel patches are time released, so abusing it could result in your getting too much, at once. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Is it ok to use Fentanyl (non-gel) patches, even though they're expired? I have taken the gel patches before and it worked better than I hoped, just took a little bit longer to kick in compared to dilaudid. I just used a 25 mcg. sticky non-gel patch, that expired in 2011. Can I expect it to work better soon?

I dont want them in the junk- or clogging the toilet... It sounds easy to do but how to get rid of a lot of them without people noticing I have them possibly?? ## Dear Aeon, u can bring them 2 a pharmacy and they will get rid of them 4 u. It's supposed 2 be private, where they ask no questions. ## I thought about that though last time I was at the pharmacy they had pamphlets for a day that everyone can bring their unused or expired Meds to some clinic- if you could just bring them to the pharmacy, why would they organize a day that you could do this? ## You can take them to your pharmacy any day and they will dispose of them for you. It doesn't have to be during a special organized event. Is there anything else I can help with? This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potenti...

I was prescribed fentanyl patches in May of 2010. I never opened them, and want to know if they would still be good. ## What's the expiration date on them? Fentanyl is a narcotic and it doesn't become dangerous if it is old or expired, but it can lose effectiveness and since the patches are made with a type of gel, it might have started to solidify a little, which means you would absorb less of the medication. Common side effects to these may include: nausea, drowsiness, constipation and dizziness. Learn more: ## I have fentanyl 50 mcg. Patch That are 2 yrs expired and was wondering if they will still be as potent as intended ,they are not the gel btw.. ## I get 10 mcg/hour butrans patches from my dr. How many mg is that an hour?

My pain doctor was out of the country for 2 months. I was seeing her P.A. who was amazing. I hadn't planned to stay with this new pain doctor anyway she was horrible. Anyway, I called for over a week to ask the nurse what I should do because I couldn't keep the fentanyl patches secured and used more of them, I was on my last one. I called everyday and left a message. She calls me back saying I couldn't get any refills until my appt. In 4 more days. I pleaded with her that I'd read the leaflet and feared the extent of the withdrawl. No answer. So I took some old (expired) meds that I had so I could fight the withdrawl. I brought them with me and told the P.A. While I was there what I did. She sympathized and seemed to know there were issues like this. I found out that day...
