Someone replied that it is not used for itching . it was prescribed to me for itching . ## Hello, Dorothy! How are you? I'm sorry, I'm not sure who said that, but according to the information provided by the FDA, Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine, so it is used to treat allergic reactions, including itching. There may have been some confusion, because it tends to have a sedative like effect, so it is sometimes given to help people sleep or to calm them down for surgical procedures. Typical side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, sedation and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help with? ...

Is it safe to take a prescription dated 8/2013? ## Hello, Dolly! How are you? It doesn't get dangerous once it's expired, but it does begin to lose effectiveness, so it may not work as well as it did, when it was new. Medications tend to degrade over time. Thus, it would be best to dispose of it and see your doctor for a new prescription, if you still need to take it. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antihistamine as possibly including nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and somnolence. Is there anything else I can help with? ...

My doctor gave me hydroxyzine pills on apr12 2012, and I want to know if there safe to take again? ## HI, Nicky! How are you? Tablets begin to degrade once they are exposed to the elements, such as heat, light and moisture. This means that their time starts ticking away as soon as the seal on the original factory container is broken. From that point on, they have a one year expiration date and after that year, they being to lose effectiveness. Hydroxyzine isn't one that has been known to be dangerous once it's expired, but it's not going to continue working and having its intended beneficial effects. Thus, the best thing to do would be to properly dispose of them and see your doctor for a new prescription. Is there anything else I can help with? ...

Thus, it will most likely not work as well as it did, when it was new, but it shouldn't cause any harm. However, if you require such a medication, it would be best to dispose of your expired stock and get a new prescription. Side effects to this medication may include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, sedation and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help with? ...

Should I take an extra pill since it's expired? ## Hello, LoSam! How are you? When did it expire? Doubling up wouldn't be advisable, because if it is still effective, that may result in far too much sedation and depression of the central nervous system, which could put in you danger, due to lowered heart rate and blood pressure. ...

How are you? I'm sorry about the way you're feeling. This medication doesn't become dangerous, once expired, but it does start to lose effectiveness, so it may not work as well as it did, when new. It would be best to dispose of it and see your doctor to obtain a new supply, if needed. This conclusion was based upon a study conducted at the request of the US military due to stockpiles of expensive drugs they could otherwise need to replace every few years. The conclusion was that 90% of those drugs remained effective 10 - 15 years after the expiration date. But the question is whether the drug you have kept happens to be one of these drugs from the study... (I have... ...
