## We have some drops used for an ear infection for our oldest daughter: Neo/Poly/HC/1% OTIC sups 10 ML green. The last time we used them was December of 2010 and they have been kept in a cool dark place, within a capped, plastic airtight medicine container since. Now we wonder if we can use them for an ear infection or our youngest daughter? Do you think they are safe to use as directed? She is 17 years old. ## In most cases, it is best not to use antibiotics after the expiration date. The reduced efficacy can increase your risk of developing antibiotic resistance. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Thus, it would be best to see a doctor for a new supply, if one is needed. Liquid medications al...

Hello, my son was prescribed Antipyrine-benzocaine war drops in 2/2015. I had it put away sealed tight I poured some in my hand to check for any discoloration and looks clear as the first day we use. He is complaining of ear pain and I was just wondering if I can still use these drops since the expiration date is for 10/2016 which is this month? ## Hello, Tita! How are you? This is not actually an antibiotic, both of the medications it contains are used to alleviate pain and inflammation. If he has an ear infection, he will need an antibiotic, in addition to these drops. The FDA warns that the side effects of such drops may include dizziness, headache, ear stuffiness, and drainage. Is there anything else I can help with?

Six days ago I had hip replacement surgery. I was given three bags of antibiotics by IV. How long does it remain in my body before being excreted? ## Hello, Joan! How are you? I hope you're doing well after your surgery and recovering. It depends on which antibiotic you received. Do you happen to know? Please note that large bags of liquid would not be an antibiotic, that would be a separate small bag. The FDA lists the typical antibiotic side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

I have bactrim that expired 4 months ago is it safe to take ## Hello, Jean! How are you? Yes, all medications start to lose efficacy once past their expiration date and may not work as well as they did, when new. The issue this creates with antibiotics, such as Bactrim, is that it may no longer properly eradicate the bacteria, which could cause it to become drug resistant. Learn more Bactrim details here. It would really be best to see your doctor for a new prescription, if you suspect that you have an infection. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Hello I have some antibiotics that has expired last month on the third is it safe to use them

I have bronchiactisis a lung condition. I have been using purbac for almost 6 months and really feel good after years of other antibiotics. Are there side effects on the long term for using perbac. This is the only antibiotic I use. ## The dose and length of time you have to take Purbac will depend on the type of infection you have. The problem with using any antibiotic a lot or for long-term is that resistant strains of bacteria eventually develop and then the antibiotic is no longer as effective. As far as any side effects go, Purbac (Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim) unfortunately has a generous list of them: Allergic - Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, anaphylaxis, allergic myocarditis, erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis, angiodema, drug fever, chills, He...

Why does the bottle of medicine given to a patient ALWAYS have a shorter expiration date than the "mother" bottle? Why aren't they the same? ## Well, as explained by the NIH, the original bottle is factory sealed, and as long as the seal remains intact, it has a longer life span, because it is not being exposed to the elements that cause degradation, such as heat, light, and moisture. However, once that seal is broken and the medication is placed in a bottle as dispensed by your pharmacy, the shorter expiration date is the longest period of time that the manufacturer can ensure that the medication maintains its maximum efficacy under average storage conditions. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have been having gum problems for two years, pain, exposed roots, etc. my dentist would treat me by amoxicillin and antibiotic packs implants along with deep cleaning saying "let's see if this works" I keep asking for a referral to a periodontist but she kept saying we are trying to prevent that but all she is doing is maxing out my yearly coverage (I have great dental plan). I switch dentist and explain to him all that has been done and even brought past records but he didn't want to see them and now He is doing the same thing deep cleaning and antibiotics. I brush all the time, floss all the time, rinse with antiseptic mouth wash all the time. I am tired of taking antibiotics I can't take the pain and I try not to take the prescribed pain medications because of w...

I have been put on 200mg of Cefpodoxime for life. I had an infected TKR (knee replacement) and infection was not stopped. I have had now my third TKR and the doctor has put me on this antibiotic. It has kept the infection away for about a year and a half now but wondering what side effects or concerns I should have. I try to periodically look up anyone that takes antibiotics daily and I can never find anyone. Can I stop at some point? is this bad? The antibiotic does keep the infection away and I don't want another infection again but this still seems extreme. Any thoughts? ## Hello, Anderson! How are you? There are many people who take an antibiotic daily prophylactically. Generally, the only long-term concern is that bacteria may build up resistance to that particular antibiotic, ...

Is it safe to take sulfamethoxazole/tmp when it expired 3 years ago? Is it toxic or does it lose some of its effectiveness? ## Hello, Lee! How are you? I have a sealed container of Augmentin that is 2 months expired and stored properly. Can I still use it? ## Hi Trudy, it is not recommended 2 use any medication that has expired . ## I have a Rx of chewable suprex that says it expires November 2015. I have had it for about 6 months so since its not expired is it still ok? ## It would be best not to use an expired medication, unless your doctor says it is okay to do so. An expired antibiotic may not be as effective as it was when new, which means it may not fully eradicate the infectious bacteria, and that the infectious bacteria could develop antibiotic resistance. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Augmentin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Ref: Augmentin Information April,...

How much damage will I recieve by mixing alcohol and nitrofuran monohyd macro ## Hello, Lisa! How are you? It will usually worsen the side effects of the medication, making you experience more dizziness, drowsiness and nausea than usual, so think of each drink being equivalent to 2 or 2 and half drinks. I have been diagnosed with cellulitus on the inner side of my left leg at the ankle. Several years ago my ankle was severely broken and I spent 3 weeks in the hospital most of which was waiting for the swelling to go down enough that doctor could replace and fix the bone damage and close without having to use a halo device. One of the unfortunate side effects was poor circulation of the area. I have had the symptoms and low grade fever of the cellulitus since the 14th. My doctor was not in on the 17th and his NFP diagnosed it and wanted to send to the DR for IV antibiotics. I don't currently have insurance and didn't want to incur the expense. So I waited tell doctor was back on the 20th. I have been taking antibiotics without realizing they can affect the effectiveness of my sprintec birth control. I haven't taken an active pill in 4 days and I have no signs of my period as of yet. Is there a possibility of pregnancy? ## Hello, Holly! How are you? What antibiotic were you taking? According to the NIH, not all of them reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives. As to being late, the FDA does warn that most antibiotics can lengthen your menstrual cycle, so you may start later than normal. I've learned to just expect it any time I have to take one. However, if you are concerned about pregnancy, there is no harm in checking to be sure.

Do doxytet work in curing ear infections if not wat can I get? ## Oral antibiotics can work, but they are generally not as fast and effective as the liquid antibiotics drops that you actually put in the ear. Learn more Doxytet details here. Was this the antibiotic prescribed for you to use? Learn more ear infection details here. The other advantage of the ear drops is that many of them also contain small amounts of steroids that can help with any inflammation and pain that you may be experiencing.

I took 3-day 500 mg Azithromycin for Acne rosacea. The total dose should be 3 day 500 mg and then skip 5 days and then take 3-day 500 mg until 4 weeks of period. but I have skin rash and itching. My doctor prescribed doxycyclin 150 mg per day. I thought Azithromycin was safer than Doxy and less sunsensitive. Should I continue Azithro or start taking Doxy and quit Azithro after three days. ## You should follow your doctor's instructions, if you are itching from the Azithromycin, that could be due to an allergic reaction and they tend to get worse, with repeated expose to the offending medication. They both carry the same risks. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can he...

I have an itching problem in my vagina, but it seems likes the problem is internal and eternal... What medication should I take? ## Vaginal itching is usually caused by a fungal infection, so antibiotics will not help, they can actual cause, or worsen them as side effects, according to NIH reports. Do you have any discharge or odor? Are you on any medications? Have you had this checked out by a doctor? Are you experiencing any other symptoms? ## Hello, I have been having this itching around my vagina for the last two months. I am not suspecting an STI cause I am still a virgin. It's not happening constantly - it only happens when I wear something that is very tight. Can I use penicillin ointment?

I have extreme wisdom tooth pain. Can a course of flucloxacillin help with this? ## It depends why you're having the pain. If it's due to an infection, then yes, the antibiotic can help. Its typical side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. However, if they are impacted, or otherwise growing in wrong the antibiotic will not help. Have you consulted your dentist? Regardless of what the problem is, it will still have to be corrected to prevent it from recurring in the future.
