I have cirrosis and I had a distended stomach due to fluid build up in my abdomen. My doctor started me on diuretics and eventually my stomach became flat but I'm down to 130 lbs and stand at 6' 1". Is it possible to gain weight and remain on the diuretics or do you have to stop taking them? ## Yes, you can gain weight on them, it just won't be weight due to fluid retention, it has to be due to healthy practices. If you are eating well and still not gaining, you should consult your doctor, as you may require a dosage adjustment, or a different medication. The FDA lists other typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, hypotension, and dehydration. How are you doing, now? Has there been any change?

My 88 yr. old dad has always had low blood pressure. Since a recent apendectomy, his ankles now swell, but blood pressure remains low at 90/58. Is there a drug that will only decrease his fluid retention? ## Hi Cher, I'm having trouble finding Diuretic medications that don't have the possibility of lowering blood pressure. However, I've posted a link below that gives some information about fluid retention and how to treat it naturally. wikihow.com/Treat-Fluid-Retention I hope this info helps! ## It would be dangerous to decrease fluid with low blood pressure. Theres a problem with his circulatory system and you should check for swelling or redness which is a sign of a blood clot. If you reduce water in low blood pressure it will cause fainting.

My 88 yr. old dad has always had low blood pressure. Since a recent apendectomy, his ankles now swell, but blood pressure remains low at 90/58. Is there a drug that will only decrease his fluid retention? ## Fluid retention is largely due to one's dietary habits, such as having too much sodium or acidic foods. To help decrease fluid retention it may be wise to eat more alkaline foods, including: fresh fruits and vegetables, lemon water, and plant-based foods in general. I'd also suggest monitoring his fat intake, as this is what hinders digestion if you have too much (health experts usually recommend eating no more than 30g a day, but this varies from person to person). Exercise is also very important for maintaining normal blood pressure and preventing fluid retention. If he is...

What are the side effects of Furosemide? ## As with many diuretics, Furosemide can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, including loss of potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium. It is especially important to prevent potassium loss. Excessive use of Furosemide will most likely lead to a metabolic alkalosis due to hypochloremia and hypokalemia. It should be used with caution in horses with liver problems or electrolyte abnormalities. Overdose may lead to dehydration, change in drinking patterns and urination, seizures, GI problems, kidney damage, lethargy, collapse, and coma. round orange ## Did you mean to say M 41 as opposed to rn 41? If so, based on the description provided, I found your pill to be a combination of Spironolactone (25 mg) + Hydrochlorothiazide (25 mg); which are both diuretics that help prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention. Does this med a diuretic? ## Hi Bob, You didn't specify whether or not you were referring to Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen or Oxycodone and Acetaminophen. However, neither of these meds are classified as diuretics. Both are actually narcotic analgesic combinations, used to treat chronic pain. Were you experiencing an increased frequency of urination after taking these pills? I wonder if it could possibly be a side effect. You can learn more about diuretics on the page for Diuretic Details I hope this helps!
