It opens ur appetite and makes u gain weight, but it makes u really sleepy. ## Periactin contains the active ingredient Cyproheptadine, it is used to treat allergic reactions, nightmares, migraines and seratonin syndrome. It is not approved for use in the US as an aid in gaining weight, though since some doctors have found this to be a side effect, they may, at their discretion, prescribe it for such as an off-label use. I have been off and on the medication since 2001. The only time I get off of it because I gain so much weight.. But as soon as I get of the meds, I loose weight and fast.. Really my Dr placed me on this med because I had a poor eating habit (maybe one meal a day).. But now I am back on the pill bc I have lost to much weight in my book... I went from 115 lbs in 2001 to 135.. Don't get me wrong I love the weight gain. I also suffer from migraines and so far this pill has yet to help with that.. I took 52 mgs of cyproheptadine in one dose. I didn't know it caused weight gain. I don't want to gain weight just wanted to sleep. If I stop now will I still gain the unwanted weight? I've been using Apetito for 2 years now and I sometimes gained weight very fast, like within a week. However I noticed if I stop taking Apetito I end up losing weight.
