My 13" beagle is 17 yrs old. Has a heart condition. Upper left molar became inflamed. Age and condition of dog id if'y at best for operation. Was given Clindamycin 75 mg 2x a day. this is to reduce swelling of location under left eye. I can not find anything that says this would reduce swelling. Will anything else reduce swelling for the dog?v ## Clindamycin is an antibiotic used to treat or prevent infections. Thus, the swelling is probably caused by an infection and will reduce, as the antibiotic has a chance to work to clear it up. As to anything else you can use, I am sorry, but I am not familiar with the use of most medications in animals, so I don't know what would be safe or effective. Have you tried asking the vet?

I have some clindamycin left over from a few months ago and I was curious if it treats a urinary tract infection ## The drugs most often used to treat routine, uncomplicated UTI's are trimethoprim (Trimpex), trimethoprim/sufamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra, Cotrim), amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox, Wymox), nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Furadantin), and ampicillin [1]. Although Clindamycin is not on the above list, it does not necessarily mean that it won't work. The thing with UTIs is that urine testing and/or medical history may be required to determine the specific bacteria causing the infection. Different meds for different bacetria. Hope this helps. I have clindamycin hcl from 2008. Is it safe to take? ## According to MicroLabs USA, a manufacturer of generic medicine, their Clindamycin tablets have an expected shelf life of 48 months (or 4 years).? [3] However, when it comes to Clindamycin Phosphate, one source I found (Yashoda Hospitals - based in the UK) states that the expiration date of topical Clindamycin gel is only 60 days. [2] Additionally, other forms of topical Clindamycin (such as Clindamycin and Benzoyl Peroxide Gel) have a similar shelf life of 3 months, according to DailyMed. [3] That said, the form it comes in does play an important role in the drug's expected shelf life, efficacy and safety profile after so much time has passed. Can clindamycin hcl liquid that was made by pharmacy still be used after 10 days ## Hello, Nika! How are you? No, 10 days is the maximum length of time that efficacy can be guaranteed. Liquids tend to degrade very fast, so once past that 10 days, it will no longer be as effective as it should, which creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. If an antibiotic is still required, it would be best to receive a new prescription from the prescribing doctor. Side effects to this antibiotic may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?
