I've been given a generic before without my knowledge, I don't think it's uncommon but it is quite frustrating! Could citalopram Hbr 20 mg tab cause itching of the skin on arms, head and face? Warning on bottle mentions "avoid prolonged sunlight". ## Hi Vickie, If it says to avoid prolonged sunlight, the medication probably causes some sort of Photosensitivity. Photosensitivity is a skin reaction (i.e. rash) that occurs after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or an artificial light source. This could explain the very symptoms you're describing. I do also want to note that itching, rashes, swelling, hives or blisters, are all listed as severe side effects of Citalopram; in which case it would probably be best to let your doctor know about this as soon as possible. Ref: nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a699001.html#side-effects I hope this information helps! ## Wh...

My doctor just switched me from Lexapro 20 mg to Citalopram 20 mg for cost reasons as I do not have coverage. It's only been a week and I'm feeling weepy at the drop of a hat...what is the difference in the drug and am I on the right "switch over" dosage? Thanks. ML ## Both of these medications are manufactured by Forest Pharmaceuticals, Inc.. However Lexapro is noted by a number of sources to be a cleaner, improved version of Citalopram. It is the active isomer of racemic Citalopram. Many user reviews I've come across report that Citalopram compared to Lexapro just makes them feel tired and "drugged", per say; while Lexapro allows you to be more mobile. Do you feel like this is a true statement, based on the equal dose you've been taking? Additional info...

How do I ween off of citalopram hbr 20mg? ## Hi, Maria! How are you? Stopping an antidepressant is usually done very slowly, because on top of some withdrawal effects, stopping abruptly might also cause some rebound effects, which could result in very severe depressive symptoms. Learn more Citalopram details here. The most recent preferred method is to start skipping days of dosing, such as taking it one day, then skipping the next. You'd do that for a week or so, to allow your body to adjust to not taking it as often, then you'd start skipping two days and so on. However, it may not be safe for you to use this method, so please check with your doctor, before proceeding. Are there any other questions or concerns?
