Colestyramine (INN) or cholestyramine (USAN) (trade names Questran, Questran Light, Cholybar, Olestyr) is a bile acid sequestrant, which binds bile in the gastrointestinal tract to prevent its reabsorption. It is a strong ion exchange resin, which means it can exchange its chloride anions with anionic bile acids in the gastrointestinal tract and bind them strongly in the resin matrix. The functional group of the anion exchange resin is a quaternary ammonium group attached to an inert styrene-...

For the past six months, I've taken cholestyramine~ 4 scoops a day. I've discovered that (silk brand) coconut milk interacts with cholestyramine and makes it frothy! And it masks that factory taste! Chunky applesauce also adds texture. Anyhow, the cholestyramine is working! ## Hello, Blue! How are you? That's awesome! I'm glad you've discovered something that works. The prescribing information provided by the FDA also says that it can be mixed with soups or other fruits, such as chunky pineapple, as long as their is enough liquid. The typical side effects of this medication may possibly including dizziness, drowsiness and constipation. Is there anything I can help with? ## Hi I just started this med on Monday. Keep going to bathroom & am so nauseaus. I have not t...

I found a way to drink that crap down. I put it in a can of orange soda, stir it well!! Darn if it's not easy to take. Great to take it early then don't take any drugs for four hours. After that you are home free!! I'm just grateful because my life is nearly normal and I'm as sane as I'll ever be!!?? ## Hello, Maria! How are you? That's a great idea and I'm glad it's working so well for you. I'm sure this information will also help others. It can also be mixed in soups, or fruits such as applesauce. As listed by the FDA, it's most common side effects is constipation. Is there anything else I can help with? ## The paperwork I received with mine says not to use it with carbonated drinks. ## I thought it couldn't be mixed with a carbonated bevera...

I have had an issue with eating and within 1/2 hour having diarrea. So I pretty much stopped eating unless I was going to be home. I had a sonogram, all was good. One doctor gave me questran powder which I had to dissolve in water, it was disgusting. It also made my right side hurt from the side to the back. So I stopped that and went to the gastro doctor. After my colonoscopy and scope the gastro doctor gave me cholestryam, which I could mix in the drink of my choice, so I have been making smoothies and malts to mask the taste. However my side is hurting again. Just a dull ache, more of a nusience than anything else. But it is working. I have not had diarrea in almost a week! And I can eat!!!! But again I have this side pain. Is it normal? Will it eventually go away? What is causing it?...

I have chronic itching due liver disease. My dr. said that taking cholestyramine may help. Can you offer any insight ## Hello, Viktoria! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about your health issues. Cholestyramine helps remove bile acids from the body and in many case where someone has a liver problem, the symptoms they experience such as the itching, are due to it not being properly processed out, anymore. So yes, it may help you, others have had success with it. Is there anything else I can help with?

I do have high cholesterol and high triglycerides(sp?) but the Cholestyramine was prescribed for me for diarrhea and such since my gall-bladder surgery. i am confused as it is not on the instructions re: what I went to the doctor to have "fixed"? I was losing my stools 3 or 4 times per day. ## Cholestyramine can be used to treat diarrhea, because it makes bile acids, such as those that may be secreted after gall bladder surgery, from being osmotically active. When they are osmotically active, they attract more water from the body into the bowel, which can cause diarrhea. It may cause side effects, such as: constipation, nausea, tooth discoloration and premature tooth decay. I have taken this med for almost 2 years now and have been having a lot of joint pain. Anyone else experience this? It really helps my stomach but the joint pain is getting bad. ## Hi nickel, Sorry to hear about your situation. 2 years is a long time to take something without experiencing any adverse reactions. According to DailyMed (NIH), musculoskeletal side effects such as muscle/joint pain, backache, & arthritis are all listed as known side effects of Cholestyramine. Ref: dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=362ddd91-a63f-4ec6-841a-75785dd208c8 As the case with many medications, the decision to continue treatment may boil down to determining whether the benefits of Cholestyramine outweigh its side effects. I hope you find relief soon! ## i followed up with my doctor ...

I have began taking Cholestyramine for Oral Suspension for the severe diarrhea I have been living with following the removal of my gall bladder in June, 2018. It seems to be working, but I am con- cerned about it absorbing the blood thinning medication I have been on following 3 strokes. There have been no more strokes since beginning Plavix 6 years ago. Does anyone know the answer? I would appreciate any help given towards answering this question!

I have been using Cholestyramine powder for a long time for digestive problems. It works great, now my prescription provider will not cover it but will cover Cholestyramine Light. Is there a difference and what is it? ## Cholestyramine Light is just one of a few brand names for Cholestyramine. They do contain the same ingredient, but may be used in a different manner than the powdered form. I haven't been able to confirm if the Light version is an oral tablet or something else. User guidelines note that: Cholestyramine is available as powder form, in 4 gram packets, or in larger canisters. In the United States, it can be purchased either as a generic medicine, or as Questran or Questran Light (Bristol-Myers Squibb). You can view more information about this medication in the link bel...

I have been taking it for 18 years daily. ## Can you tell me how much this product would cost without insurance? Also is there a way to legally donate this medicine if the product is no longer needed?

Is Cholestralomine a statin? ## Hello, Judy! How are you? I'm sorry, did you mean Cholestyramine? If so, no. It is a bile acid sequestrant. But through its action, it can lower plasma cholesterol levels. Its most common side effects are constipation, tooth discoloration, increased risk of gallstones and increased triglyceride levels. I have no copper level and my white blood platelets count is 38. I take one packet of Prevalite (Cholestyramine) in the morning. Does anyone else have the same problem? ## Were these conditions present before you started taking the Prevalite, or did they only appear after you started taking it? It is most commonly used to help lower cholesterol and to treat itching in people that produce too much bile acid. The NIH warns that letting it sit in your mouth for too long can cause dental damage. ## This is a condition I got after 8 years taking the medicine.
