Can You Take Methadone After Subutex

Hi, I've been prescribed opiates for years now. With a few breaks between (with Subs, methadone, etc) after weaning my usage down. I took 2 days of methadone. Can I still take 2 mg (and slowly increase) my subutex use 24hrs after my last dose of 30mg methadone? ## Hello, Sue! How are you? Just like when starting Suboxone, you have to be in full withdrawal, before taking Subutex, unless your doctor directs otherwise, or it could throw you into dangerous precipitated withdrawals. The FDA classifies this medication as an opiate that is most commonly used to treat drug addiction, so it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help with?

It's been a bout 80 hrs since I took Methadone fir a week straight. I've been on Subutex for 2 yrs. I just wanna feel better. I have 3 kids and a job. Please help me. When will my Subutex work again ## Hi Evam, Sorry to hear about your situation. I realize it's been over a month since you posted this. How are you feeling now? Much better I hope!? Anyhow, according to MedsChat's half-life calculator, methadone has an average half-life of 37.5 (roughly three days). I've also heard from some medical professionals that it may take up to five half-life cycles for a medication to be completely out of your system ['hair' probably being an exception]. So 37.5 x 5 half-life's = 187.5 hours (or about a weeks time). I think it's always a good idea to double chec...

My name is AJ. I've been taking 8mg subutex ( not suboxone) for two weeks. I start the methadone clinic in 5 days. How long should I be off subutex to start methadone? And if I still have subs in my system will I go into precipitated withdraws? ## Hi AJ, It looks like this question has already been asked/answered in several other discussion threads here, so what I'm doing is just linking you to the thread that I feel addresses this inquiry most accurately: Discuss/SETTING-RECORD-STRAIGHT-how-long-after-taking-subutex-can-u-take-methadone-280366.htm This social worker from a pain management clinic goes on to state that patients should wait 12 to 24 hours after Subutex before having Methadone in order to avoid precipitated withdrawals; due to the presence of Buprenorphine, which k...

Can you take methadone 16 hours after taking a little less then half of a 8mg Subutex? ## Yes, but you may not feel the methadone. And it's the other way around, taking methadone then subutex can cause problems. ## I have been on suboxone for about three weeks and ran out, but went 4 days without then took 5 mg of methadone because that was all I had left. But it's been 19 hours since then. Can I take subutex again now or have to wait?

I would like to know cause I take methadone and I've got subutex that a friend gave me but I thought it might hurt me ## I know for certain never to take suboxone..I take 90 mg of methadone and done a quarter of suboxone and litrally died they brung me back but I still have side effects from that nite ## @loco, I have to concur with becca on the fact that it's probably not safe to use either of these drugs within at least a few days of each other. One counteracts the other so much that it could potentially put your body into a life-threatening state of withdrawal (if taken at the wrong time). I have seen testimonies from other people who accidentally attempted this and later paid the price. Apparently when your receptors are filled with methadone, buprenorphine may take the meth...

My dr is changing me to methodone tablets from subutex for pain managment I dont wonr to withdrawal at all how can I transition ## Hello, Penny! How are you? Didn't your doctor provide you with details on how to do so? Generally, it will take a few days for Subutex to process out of your body, so the Methadone can work. Usually, they advise 72 hours, but it can vary from person to person. The FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. ## U can take methadone right after. The next day. You won't feel much at first but you can take it. ## I hate that your docter is switching you to Methadone the withdrawals from that stuff is the worse I would not recommend that to anyone I...

I tried taking a suboxone 2 days after my last dose of methadone but am now in withdrawal. Can I take methadone now to bring me out? ## @JD To my knowledge there shouldn't be a problem with taking methadone "after" suboxone. Apparently if it's the other way around (suboxone "after" methadone), only then would you have to wait it out for several days in order to avoid being put into immediate withdrawals. I've also seen comments from other patients going from suboxone to methadone within a 24 hour period who said that they were completely fine and didn't experience any problems with sickness or withdrawal. But if you have personal experience going through this process that may be any different from what I've witnessed, please do post your feedback on t...

I took two 10mg methadones about eight hours ago for the very first time. Am i okay to take some subutex without there being any serious side effect? ## Probably too late but don't do it. You could get precipitated withdrawals. ## @james, In order to avoid precipitated withdrawal, my findings suggest that it may be a good idea to wait at least 3-5 days or longer before using Subutex, depending on how fast you metabolize Methadone. According to nhtsa.gov, Methadone's half life is reported to be an estimated 60 hours, which means it's probably better to play it safe rather than take any risks within the first 24 hours. But if you really need to use Subutex sooner, I'd encourage you to contact your doctor about getting a second opinion based on their own discretion from exp...

I have been on about three quarters of generic subutex pills per day for over a year now. I ran out of subutex and took 40 mg of methadone the first day and 30 mg the next. I now have my subutex and I am wondering how long I should wait to take it... My husband had done this in the past where he only used the methadone a few days and switched right back to subutex the next day (at least 24 after). I just wanted to see if anyone else has had any experience with this. I do not want to be sick I've been through precipitated withdrawls before. TIA ## Subutex only contains the narcotic Buprenorphine, it doesn't contain the Naloxone that is in Suboxone, which would cause the precipitated withdrawals. This is a narcotic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side ef...

Hi all, I am 39, male and am going to take 8 MG's Subutex after being on methadone for 4 years (I'm just over it, tired) 60 MG's next day took 30 MG's next day took 20mgs and finally 10 MG's to taper a bit. I then waited 43 hours and am in moderate withdrawal. I have been in much worse withdrawal then now but decided to go ahead with 8 MG's of sub now to see, lab rat style, if I precip or get relief. There seem to be many different experiences, some say 24 hours some say 72. I will try to give an update if I precip and will for sure if I don't. Fingers crossed, I hope its the latter. Any input or encouragement would be appreciated. I am determined to finally beat this thing, don't want to turn 40 and still be an active addict. Much love to all of you. Lov...

I have been taking methadone for 10 days starting at 30 and ending at 60. I don't want to have to get up at 5am and drive 35min for the rest of my life, so I'd like to get back on subutex. Can anyone tell me when I can take it? I have not taken methadone for 2 days now. ## Hello, Cory! How are you? You need to be in full withdrawal, before taking Subutex, otherwise it may throw you into dangerous precipitated withdrawals. Thus, there's no precise time frame that can be given, because it may vary from person to person. The FDA classifies this medication as an opiate that is most commonly used to treat drug addiction, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Ive been on 160mg of methadone for 2 years but i cant Feel it at all, if i switch to subutex will i feel Them? ## @drew, According to The National Alliance of Advocates for Buprenorphine Treatment (naabt.org), it is recommended that patients slowly reduce their Methadone dosage down to 30mgs for a period of at least a week, BEFORE attempting to discontinue it completely - AND THEN waiting at least 36 hours before starting Buprenorphine. They also go on to emphasize that patients "MUST" be in a mild to moderate state of withdrawal before taking their first dose of Buprenorphine. That said, I would just encourage you to follow these protocols down to the 'T' as well as asking your doctor for their opinion in case minor adjustments need to be made to fit your specific situa...

Hi, I'm currently taking 120mg of methadone which i take 40mg every 8 hours and I've been in the hospital for over 3 months due to a blood infection that has left me almost unable to walk. Now I would have to go to a methadone clinic everyday in order to dose which is impossible with me being in a wheel chair right now. I'm wanting to go back on subutex as I was on this medication before until I needed something stronger for pain. Can I take a low dose of subutex tonight like 12 hours after I last dosed on methadone at 40mg. ## Hell, Jaymee! How are you? I'm very sorry that you're so ill. If you're in the hospital, you shouldn't take anything without doctor's approval, because there may be interactions or problems with something else they have you taking,...

I've been taking about 3mg subtext for three months and was going to switch to methadone. Took 20mg today. I've decided it just isn't for me. I want to go back to the subutex. How long do I need to wait to safety take the subutex. ## If you took the methadone while the subutex was still in you system, the subutex would have eliminated the methadone. You should be ok to go back to subs. Do some research first cause im not 100% sure. good luck!!! ## I took 10 mg. of methadone last night at around 10pm for the very first time. I did not like it at all and have some 8mg. subutex here that i am thinking of trying instead . It is now 11am, would this be safe for me to take now? ## My experience: I used to be on 40mgs of methadone for over a year and switched to subutex..not suboxo...

Hey guys I’ve been on methadone for 8 years taking 127mg I’m so tired of not being able to go out of town or do anything without showing why we’re and whatever else they ask for to show proof of why I couldn’t make it if my number is called while I’m away from the clinic it’s like I’m on Color code or something I am trying to figure out what I should do to switch to subutex with less withdrawals as possible because I work 6 days a week 10 hours a day and I’m VERY NERVOUS about doing this but think it’s time ## Hello, Beth! How are you? Many people have successfully switched, but you do have to be in full withdrawal from the Methadone, before you do so. A doctor licensed to prescribe Suboxone for addiction treatment should be able to ...

I go to the clinic and get methadone but missed a day, so i took a half a subutex. Within 15 min it sent me into immediate withdrawal. How long should i wait to take my methadone again? Is it going to send me into worse withdrawal? ## If you took Subutex, then it did not send you into withdrawals, you are most likely experiencing withdrawal from missing your Methadone, you probably didn't take an equivalent dose of the Subutex. Subutex only contains the opiate Buprenorphine, it doesn't contain the Naloxone like Suboxone does, which is what could cause someone to go into precipitated withdrawals. These medications are listed by the FDA as carrying the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation. You shoul...

Hello my name is kev. I have been consuming about 3 to 6 mg of Subutex daily for about 7 months. I'm very eager to eliminate the Subutex and start on these Methadone. Is it safe to consume Methadone 20 mgs the day after taking about 3 mgs of Subutex? I heard Suboxone was the dangerous one, not Subutex and I also heard the taking Methadone after Subutex is safe apposed to Methadone to Subutex. Any answers would be highly appreciated. Thank you. ## People are just stupid. The buprenorphine is what keeps you from feeling high on other full opiates. The naloxone is only in the suboxone to keep you from misusing the drug. If taken properly the naloxone will not affect you. noone seems to understand that subutex is just as useful for opiate w/d as suboxone and it is the active ingredient ...

If one took 2mg of buprenorphine and 8 mg methadone an hour later, would they get sick? ## No, but the Methadone will not have any effect. The Buprenorphine takes a much stronger hold on the opiate receptors than other opioids, so it stops them from being able to have any effect. The FDA classifies this medication as an opiate that is most commonly used to treat drug addiction, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Is the buprenorphine also combined with naxolone as it is in suboxone? ## If I took a 10 milligram Methadone will it be ok 3 hours later to take a Subutex

Both subutex and suboxone will cause precipitated withdrawal. It is the bupe that connects to the receptors and kicks the methadone out. Naloxone is just an extra blocker!! I am a social worker at a clinic. Waiting at least 12 hours only if on low dose 20mg or less should b OK. But 24 preferred. ## If you take a little less then half of a 8mg subutext 15 hours ago is it safe to take 20mgs of methadone does anyone know! ! ! ## Why do people always minimize Naloxone? EMTs give the ODs Narcan, which brings the patient into withdrawal. Naltrexone (Vivitrol) has been used with chronic opiate addicts and alcoholics in several forms, pill, 30 day shot, implant. It is a VERY strong blocker and has many side effects. I have personal experience with this medication & know that it is not somet...
