I have a repeat script dated 2 nov 2010 . Will I still be able to get it filled ## Have you tried asking a local pharmacist? I'm not sure what the laws are for you. In the U.S. refills are only good for a year after the original prescription is filled, but I'm not sure what other countries ascribe to that. Does anyone else know? ## Thanks for your reply. Yes it's the same here in Australia. I was just hoping I could have filled it over our Easter vacation with all doctors were off duty but no luck! ## I have a prescription that says 1 refill before 4/20/17. Can I still fill it?

I have a UTI and have 8 year old Leviquin tablets. Are they still good to use or should I get a fresh script? ## While they do not become toxic, they do tend to lose efficacy, with time, so it would be best to dispose of them and see your doctor for a new prescription. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I Have Severe Ulcer Pain And have Taken Hyoscyamine Sublingual Tabs With Good Results. I have meds But The Prescription Is Expired From 2007. Is It Safe To Take Now? ## According to Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. This conclusion was based upon a study conducted at the request of the US military due to stockpiles of expensive drugs they could otherwise need to replace every few years. The conclusion was that 90% of those drugs remained effective 10 - 15 years after the expiration date. Source: health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update1103a.shtml But the question is whether the drug you have kept happens to be one of these drugs ...

If a prescription expired can you still take them ## I'm not not an MD so I cannot say whether or not it is still safe to consume an expired pill, but my opinion is that you should take caution as to how long it has been expired for. I personally wouldn't take it if it is more than a week expired, because not only would the ingredients degrade over time and not be as effective, but perhaps in some medications the chemical makeup may be altered over the years and there's always a greater risk of unwanted side effects that are associated with that. My advice is to play it safe and just let it go. ## Can I take guaifenesin if it expired Oct 2015. Would it help me out with the mucous

I have a sinus infection and want to know if these are still safe to take ## Hello, Ang673! How are you? They don't become dangerous, once expired, but they do begin to lose effectiveness, so they may not properly eradicate an infection, that coupled with the fact that you may not have enough to complete a full course of treatment creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Thus, it would be best to see your doctor for a new prescription. Side effects to this medication may include nausea, dizziness, non-alelrgic skin rash and diarrhea. I have a dexedrine prescription that I received a prior authorization on last year for 150 pills every 30 days. The prior authorization has expired and I need a new one. The pharmacy told me they can only fill for 120 pills until the next prior authorization has been approved so my question is can the pharmacy fill the prescription asking for 150 pills for 120 instead or do I need a whole new script asking just for the 120 ## Hello, Lisa! How are you? In theory, they should be able to fill for the 120, but some pharmacies won't, so you'll need to ask the pharmacist to be sure how they'll handle it. I have a chronic back pain, and have many Rx from 2005. Could I still use them? How old is too old? ## As with anything, whether it be drugs, food or drink, you should not take them if they are out of date. The date is on the packet for your safety, and you could experience more adverse effects from taking out of date medication. Also most medications can begin to loose their effectiveness at any time passed the expiration date (it would be difficult to pinpoint exactly when it starts degrading), so it would be best in your case to just request a new prescription given the length of time it has been out of date. However, if you'd really like to be certain about the pills degradation, you would have to take them to a lab and have them analyzed for quality. I don't know how to go ...

My mother has some Penicillin VK left from a previous dental infection in 2005, Is it safe for her to use now? ## It is too old to be effective. As pills age, the active ingredients start to break down and as time passes, you will get less and less of an effective dosage. Taking them now, also raises the risk of developing drug-resistan bacteria. So all around, it is not a good idea and she will be better off getting a new prescription.
