I have been taking Metformin XR 500 MG for about 2 years after having an issue with nausea with regular Metformin. In an effort to lower my reliance on meds I began cutting the 500 MG pill in half about 6 months ago and in the last 2 mos have had constant nausea and some diarrhea. Stopped Metformin about 6 weeks ago but still having same issues. Nausea level is about 3-5 on a scale of 1-10. It appears that I should not have split the pills in half. My stomach “growls” constantly and I plan to see a gastroenterologist. I am tired regularly and no longer exercising. ## The ER designates it as being a time released formulation, so no, it should not be cut, or broken, as that could cause you to get too much of the medication, at once. I have some Metformin Hcl 1000mg tablets. My dose has been reduced to 500 mg. Is it safe to cut the 1000mg ones in half? ## It is safe, as long as you weren't taking a time released formulation. This would be denoted on your prescription label by an abbreviation such as ER, XR or SR. There will usually also be a warning on them from the pharmacy that says do not crush or chew, swallow tablet whole. # 48 one side #93 other side ## 93 49 is Metformin 500mgs, a generic for Glucophage, this is a diabetes drug that helps to control blood sugar levels. Pill Image ## I found a white pill with blue spots and it has an A on one side and on the other it has 159 on it.
