I have a really bad toothache that I think is abscessed. Will Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) help treat the infection? ## Can Bactrim be used for a Tooth Infection? While Bactrim is effective against a range of bacterial infections, it is not typically the first-line antibiotic for treating tooth infections, which are often caused by anaerobic bacteria found in the oral cavity. These infections usually respond better to antibiotics that are specifically effective against the types of bacteria found in dental abscesses, such as penicillin, amoxicillin, or clindamycin, which are more traditionally prescribed by dentists. However, in cases where a patient cannot tolerate these first-line antibiotics or if the infection is caused by a bacteria that is known to be susceptible to...

It is an antibiotic, so it can be used to treat various types of infections, however, it is not going to negate the need for a dental visit. Hopefully you can take your dog to go see one in person to determine if it is in fact an abscess or not. I've just seen so many negative reports here pertaining to side effects associated with Bactrim in particular that I'm very partial to the idea of it being given to an animal. This isn't to suggest that it's not a via...

Can I use bactrim to treat a tooth infection? ## Bactrim is an antibiotic that can be used to treat a variety of infections, it is one of the few that's been found to still be effective against MRSA. However, there are some problems that could arise, if you're trying to self-diagnose and self-treat. If you have leftover tablets from a prior prescription, you may not have enough to fully eradicate the infection and that creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Additionally, most dental infections are caused by issues, such as deep dental caries or receding gums, which require proper attention from a dentist. Otherwise, the infection will just keep coming back. You can learn more Bactrim details here. Have you had the presence of an infection confirmed by a de...

Hello my name is EMMA GARCIA OCAMPO and i have had gum infections in my mouth on the bottom gum between my bottom lip and my gum and it hurts badly i also wanted to know if batrim is also for gum pain and tooth acke ## Hello, Emma! How are you? Was this medication prescribed for you? It is an antibiotic, so it can help with various types of bacterial infections. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. It will not, however, treat pain. The only way it helps with that is if it helps to eradicate the infection, then the pain usually eases. Either way, it does not negate your need to see a doctor or dentist, because you still need to have whatever issue that caused the infection fixed, or it will just kee...

I have the drug Bactrim (small white pill with the letters MP/81)and I need to know if I can use it to treat a tooth infection? ## I'd like to add some information for anyone in a similar situation that's seeking an answer… Bactrim is an antibiotic that's used to treat various types of infections…..and everyone reading this knows there's a but coming…. my cheek has been swollen for 4 day now and my tooth mouth is in pain I need to know if bactrim can be used for this purpose untill i can get to the dentist to pull my tooth ## Hello, Maria! How are you? Rather than taking left-overs from an old prescription, you need to see your dentist, now. To avoid the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria, you need to be able to have enough to take a full course of the antibiotic, additionally, you need to be sure that an infection is present and that there isn't something else going on. Then, before the tooth can be pulled, the proper amount of antibiotic needs to be taken for several days, or there's a chance that the anesthetic won't work and you'll feel everything, when they pull it. I had that happen and trust me, it...

I have the following antibiotics that I can take to help me until I can get to my dental appointment, but my dental appointment isn't until February 10th. I always keep my appointments because it's hard to get in with them, they stay booked for the time frame I can get there. I have an infection in the front of my gum area, front tooth stays sore a lot. It comes and goes all the time. I can taste it too. Which one would help me best until my appointment? Macrobid, Levofloxacin, or Bactrim? ## Hi Kym, I see you posted this on January 30th...and it's now March 2nd (after your appointment date). Were you ever able to determine which antibiotic to take for the tooth infection? I've been prescribed Penicillin/Amoxicillin for this in the recent past and that seemed to keep me ...

I used Bactrim; it takes more time to work than clindamycin. It has taken four days for the swelling to go down, but it has gone down and is almost normal now. I have double strength pills and will take them 2x a day for ten days. I also used the clove oil on my gums and that is working very well. They are going from red to pink again. You can buy this a CVS or Walgreens in the toothpaste isle. I also have been taking four advil 2x day for the swelling. ## Hello, KLF! How are you feeling? I'm glad the antibiotic worked for you. How fast it helps really depends on the nature of the bacteria and the severity of the infection. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything e...

I have this medication that I dont remember what it was for but I have an infected tooth thats killing me and going into my ear, I have no insurance or funds what dosage would I take this at? I have just started I took one and Im thinking 3 times a day every 8 hours will this help? ## Gregory, Bactrim is not the most effective antibiotic for dental infections. Most hospitals offer a dental clinic based on ability to pay or charity care. I understand the challenges of being financially strapped but even taken as prescribed this class drug may not completely focus on the complex infections encountered in dental sensitive organisms. For other types of infections the usual dosage of this drug is two tablets taken twice daily for ten days or otherwise directed by your prescriber. I hope that ...

However, you will still need to see a dentist to have the underlying issue that has caused the toothache correct.

I have an abscess tooth will this medication work for this or is it used for a abscess tooth? Sulfameth/trimethoprim 800/160 tabs ## Sulfamethoxazole with Trimethoprim is an antibiotic, it's a generic for Bactrim, so it may help with the infection that causes an abscess, but that will only be a temporary fix.
