I am on 80 mg of Atorvastatin. Can I safely start cutting my doses to 40 for a week or two, then half the 40 for a week or two, then half the 20, then get off without the extreme side effects? ## Hi Terry, Generally, it's best to discuss tapering protocols with your prescribing doctor in order to mitigate possible risk factors (e.g. rebound effects or withdrawal symptoms). However, as a last resort, and because only you know your body and how it responds to Atorvastatin, my opinion is that your current approach certainly seems feasible. Since Atorvastatin is used to treat high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, simply changing your diet (staying away from foods that raise those numbers) should theoretically yield noticeable results in and of itself. Unfortunately no one can accura...

After my CABG on 09.09.2010, I am taking Clopitab - A 150 Mg daily one after lunch as directed by my Cardiologist/surgeon. Since last week I am going through Arrhythmia (irregular Heart bits - skipping 10 - 12 bits / min out of 80 -90 bits with Blood pressure 130/90 hg/mm) Is it due to the side effect of the following tablets I am taking daily as per the prescription? 1. Clopitab - A 150 Mg (After lunch) 2. Embeta XR 25 Mg (After Breakfast) 3. Atorva 10 MG (After dinner) Waiting for your responce /advice, as the Local Medical Officer is totally helpless regarding any suggestion/advice regarding the above subject matter. ## Copitab-A contains the active ingredients Clopidogrel and Aspirin, it is used as a blood thinner and to inhibit clotting. Is it ok to break 80 mg tablets in half to acheive 40mg dose? ## Of course it is! You would be far better and cheaper if you were to buy a good generic atorvastatin though, as Lipitor is exceedingly overpriced. 80mg is a HUGE dosage of atorvastatin, and is equivalent in potency to almost 160mg Simvastatin, which many consider the superior statin. Have you recently suffered a stroke or myocardial infarction? ## It is okay to do so, as long as the medication is not time released, and your doctor approves. My cardiologist often prescribes some of my medications in a higher dosage, so I can cut them in half, since it is often cheaper that way. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Atorvastatin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and joint/muscle aches. Are you on any othe...

was switched to Atorvastatin 80mg tab MFG:Sandoz. when you open bottle, pills smell like they were soaked in alcohol. ## Hi flor, From what I could gather, there are actually many reports filed about the strong smell and taste of this medication. Enough to warrant a recall back in 2010: "From August 2010 through December 2010, Pfizer recalled specific bottles of LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets (40 mg only) due to a small number of reports of an uncharacteristic odor related to the bottles in which LIPITOR is packaged. A medical assessment has determined that the odor is not likely to cause adverse health consequences in patients taking LIPITOR. There is no need to take any action if you take LIPITOR; please continue to take your medication as prescribed by your doctor. Howeve...

I took all this for a long time. I started breaking out with about 200 hives all over my legs and side of my body. Can you please tell me what it could be? I had to quit taking all my medication except my sugar shot and I started adding one pill at a time. As soon as I got to that amlodipine and I took 70 units of my leveremir the next morning I broke out all over, so I quit and just took two 45 unit doses and I was okay. Can someone help me please?
