I was on Atenolol from 2002 to 2017. Then there was a "shortage". The new Atenolol is absolutely NOT the same. If it was, I wouldn't have to take 9, that's right 9 50mg tablets of metoprolols with the Atenolol. I've told my Doctor. He either doesn't believe me, or doesn't care. With my hand on a Bible.... Atenolol has changed. ## I am very sorry about the problem that you're having, that is a lot of medication to take regularly. However, I would like to ask a few questions to gain a better understanding of what is going on. What condition are you taking these medications to treat, hypertension, a cardiac condition, or something else? What is happening that causes you to feel you need to take so much of the Metoprolol, with your Atenolol? These medications...

I was diagnose with high blood pressure (BP) about ten years ago (at 40 years) and my doctor prescribe Atenolo 50 mg which I used for about three years. Then my doctor added nifedipine 20mg which I am now taking for about seven years. About two years now I feel dizzy when I stand for some time and when I check my BP I am getting low reading example, 104/65, 95/60/, 112/75. My doctor did kidney's and diabetic's blood test which he said was ok. About one year ago I was diagnose with diabetics but it is under control. I reduce the nifedipine 20mg to 10 and later 5mg but still get the dizzy feeling at times. When I exercise(walking) 4-7Km every other day my BP even go down lower. My concern is when stand for some time with little movements I feel dizzy due the low BP at that time. O...

How are you doing? Do you still have the edema? Is your regular doctor back, yet? Both of these medications can cause edema, so it's difficult to say which one is the culprit. As to stopping it, there can be risks associated with stopping one abruptly, as reported by the FDA, such as rebound high blood pressure and elevated heart rate. But severe edema also creates the risk of congestive heart ...

Hi, My name is Dk, 35 years old, I am experiencing high BP since last 4 years. initially it was 140/100 in 2008..Now it is around 155/105 with pulse rate 105... Recently, the Doctor has prescribed Aten 25 (once in a day for 10 days), but few hour after taking Aten 25, I feel very much thirsty and I feel my mouth very dry. Is this normal effect of Aten 25 or I need to consult the Doctor. ## Atenolol is a beta blocker that's most commonly used to treat high blood pressure and it can cause this dry mouth, as a side effect. If your doctor keeps you on the Atenolol, this side effect usually wears off in a few weeks, after your body adjusts to the medication. Learn more Atenolol details here. I started using Atenolol 50mg daily in January 2002. For years I considered it a "wonder drug" since it easily took care of my BP issues and had no noticeable problems with side effects. I started noticing earlier this year that my BP was fluctuating more than normal... almost like the Atenolol was no longer effectively regulating it. I also just didn't feel like "myself" though I was still functional at home and work. Over the Thanksgiving weekend I developed Bradycardia episodes... a very slow irregular heartbeat that was approaching 40 beats per minute. These episodes increased immediately after taking my daily Atenolol dose. After the holiday I went to the emergency room and was there for a night in the hospital for observation. All results came back negative inc...

My name Gloria. 75 years. Have High blood pressure For years prescribed Pharmapress 20 mg. Atenolol 50mg and Ridac water pill. Dr took away Ridac and replaced it with Amlodipine5mg once a day. My ankles look swollen and i am putting on weight. Dr said the Ridac takes away the Calcium out of my bones. I really feel I should be taking the waterpill. Please advice urgently. Thankyou. ## Hi Gloria, Sorry to hear about your situation with Amlodipine. "swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs" is listed as a general side effect of this medication. So fortunately, you may have to talk to your doctor about discontinuing it anyways if the swelling doesn't subside. Hopefully then, he might reconsider putting you back on the water pill with a calcium supplement. There are als...

Hello - I take Atenolol 50 mgms and have been prescribed Lercanidipine 20 mgms since January 2017, as my BP was high. It has stabilised well -current BP 118/62 this morning. However my ankles in the last week have been really oedematous and wonder whether the Lercanidipine is the cause of it? I use a wedge in bed to elevate legs above heart at nighttime. The warmer weather has made them worse. I also feel really tired all the time. Can you advise please? ## Yes, the FDA does list edema as being a possible side effect of Lercanidipine, along with nausea, dizziness, headache, and fatigue. Ref: Lercanidipine Information Have you consulted your doctor? In most cases, this doesn't go away, and a person has to switch to a different medication.

My doctor prescribed these pills for me for 10 days twice a day but didn't explain if I had to avoid certain foods and I am also wondering why I have to take them for 10 days? ## No, there is no list of foods you should avoid, but you should make sure not to take it on an empty stomach, because the FDA warns that it is very harsh on the stomach. You should take it for the duration your doctor has directed, to bring your potassium levels back up to a safe zone. I took 20 mg Lisinopril a second time instead of 50 mg Atenolol. Supposed to take the Lisinopril once daily and the Atenolol twice. Am I okay? ## If you are concerned then you should call poison control at (800) 222-1222. From what I was reading, the biggest risk would be your blood pressure dropping too low (hypotension). However, taking only one additional dose may not cause that for you. Here is a pdf with more information: ACE Inhibitor Overdoses I hope this helps and please report back with your outcome.

I have been given Atenolol 100MG and Lisin/HCTZ 20-12.5 by one doctor and Nifedipine 60MG ER by a cardiologist and told to take all three drugs for high blood pressure. Is this normal to take 3 different medications? I'm feeling very tired all the time. ## Yes, if you had particularly high blood pressure that needs to be brought down fast, then having multiple drugs prescribed is completely normal, due to the fact that it is far too dangerous to leave it high. The tiredness you are feeling could be due to two reasons, the first could be side effects of the medications, which should taper off as your body adjusts to them. The second can be due to the blood pressure lowering, since your body is used to running at a higher level. Are you checking your BP regularly?

The atenolol med I am taking is manufactured by Ranbaxy and has the letters and number inscribed on the pill RE 20. I just started taking and am getting severe adverse reactions. Previously was taking atenolol manufactured by Geneva/Sandoz and did not have any reactions for the last eight years. I pharmacy says they are OK'd by the FDA. Cost savings. The drug has enlarged my veins near my wrists and have felt anxious as well as stomach swelling after eating meals. How can I verify that the drug has the prescribed chemical makeup that should be in it? I think that it is another drup and giving me side effects. ## I cannot find this listed in the databases to verify what it is, however, I can tell you that just because something does contain the same active ingredients and is an appro...

United Healthcare is raising the copay on this ptescription and recommending Metoprolol tartrate, . arvedilol or atenolol. Titled subject is $45 in 2012 vice $3. for alternatives. Are the alternatives safe, same side-effect, and would my doctor have to change the prescription with my supplier? ## Yes, they all pretty much have the possibility of causing the same side effects. However, the Carvedilol is known to cause them far less often than the other options you mentioned. And yes, your doctor would have to give you a new prescription, because a pharmacy can't just change it, without their approval. Hello, I've taken lisinopril 5 mg x 1 daily for a few years, as I have 1 kidney. I've also taken atenolol 50 mg x1. My blood pressure has always been good at 120/80 or less. Last week the numbers jumped to 170/101 and higher, as I was told to increase lisinopril to 20 mg and atenolol to 50 x2. Blood pressure was still high 150's/ 99. Kidney doc put me own losatran 50 mg x 2 three days ago. I stopped the lisinopril. Blood pressure was still high 169/104 today. I have diabetes also. My kidney doc says: all my blood work is good, ekg good, cat scan of head good. Any suggestion on the sudden jump in blood pressure? I'm very concerned why the sudden jump, almost like someone thru a switch. Where do we check next? Also, I'm a 70 year old male. Thanks. ## Hello, Ken! How ar...

I'm just starting my Multaq prescription today. I've had A-fib for 11 years, which has largely been controlled by Flecainide and Atenolol, after undergoing an ablation in 2001. During the last year or so, I've had more, longer-lasting episodes of arrhythmia, often lasting 12 hours or longer. My cardiologist recommends that I not continue the Flecainide much longer because in the long run it can cause heart problems, including new arrhythmias. I awoke this morning in AF, and am waiting to see if the new med will work for me (no change yet, after 4 hours). I was diagnosed with a blood clot in my left atrial appendage last June, which has put my planned cryoablation on hold indefinitely. If the clot should break loose during the procedure, it would go into my brain, says my dr....
